If Mays successor promotes no deal, businesses will start to pack their bags and then the backlash against Brexit will begin. I do not believe no deal is popular amongst the majority of politicians or the general public.

Peregrina · 21/05/2019 20:14

I think No Deal itself may not be unpopular. Rising prices and job loses will be, but that will be the fault of the EU for not giving in to us. All the stuff about 'easiest deals in history' and 'they need us more than we need them', and the USA riding to the rescue on our terms, will be quietly forgotten.

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2019 20:44

I thought they legislated against a no deal Brexit. I don't understand, as no deal is the default hut that was the terminology used.

Absolutely! now is not the time to give in and vote for brexit, we all need to hold out for a revoke or another vote.

The Tories will not go for a no-deal, they realise it will finish them, its bluff and bluster.
As those folk in Scunthorpe are now realising "short term disruption" has a whole new meaning when its your town that loses 5000 jobs, it will be repeated across the UK in a no-deal scenario and people wont blame the EU, they'll blame our politicians.

Peregrina · 21/05/2019 21:05

The diehard Leavers will blame the EU.

Parliament did legislate against No Deal, and May's WA is the only 'deal' on the table, which isn't a deal, but the start of the negotiations avoiding crashing out. It's not negotiable. Maybe she has tried to explain that to them. Who knows? She is not a good communicator at the best of times.

HateIsNotGood · 21/05/2019 21:10

How do we like our milkshakes - shaken or stirred?

Mum2jenny · 21/05/2019 21:17

Let's wait and see how ppl vote on Thursday, Brexit or Change, the 2 partied which want either out irrespective or want to ditch Article50.
It's a bit of a referendum although it shouldn't be as whoever gets voted in will represent the U.K. for potentially the next 5 years.

Genevieva · 21/05/2019 21:18

This 4th attempt will almost certainly fail. It has become a vote on her continued leadership. The added ifs, buts and maybes are just hot air. Her deal is also appallingly bad, which is why the whole of the House of Commons in united in voting against it, whatever their views on Brexit. Remainers would rather a hard Brexit than her deal and Leavers would rather remain in the EU than have her deal.

She is deluding herself if she thinks she might get this over the line. I think it will be the biggest defeat in parliamentary history. All she is doing is delaying the inevitable by a few weeks so that she doesn't' have to resign on Friday.

bellinisurge · 21/05/2019 21:36

They haven't legislated against No Deal. Not really. There's some sort of "it need Parliamentary approval" but I can see enough of them caving, particularly when they all get hammered on Thursday .

GhostofFrankGrimes · 21/05/2019 21:56

It’s likely that Mays successor will make the same mistakes. Initially drunk on power, lots of sabre rattling. Then an advisor will explain why no deal is bad. They’ll try and renegotiate the WA. More sabre rattling and empty threats. Back to the start. Then maybe enough people will be fed up and throw in the towel.

1tisILeClerc · 21/05/2019 22:02

{Her deal is also appallingly bad, which is why the whole of the House of Commons in united in voting against it, whatever their views on Brexit.}

However bad it might be, it is the only offer on the table from the EU now and into the future, so if it really is so terrible the only option is revoke.
HoC and cabinet still haven't understood the 2 sentences spoken by Mr Barnier:
This is the WA and we will not change it.
We will not open trade negotiations until it is signed.

If D Davis and others hadn't pratted around for 2 years and had actually negotiated, then it is possible the WA might have been a little 'easier' (but still not breaching the 4 pillars) but no, it was toys out of pram time.

1tisILeClerc · 21/05/2019 22:06

The UK has called the EU's bluff, and has lost. Cabinet simply haven't understood this, although I expect Theresa actually understands but has no clue how to get any further when faced with 'wilful stupidity'.

Lonelycrab · 21/05/2019 22:22

No deal can’t be legislated against. What a shower of shit. Thanks, DC. How’s your big society looking now?

jasjas1973 · 21/05/2019 22:42

I doubt this deal will ever get as far as vote.

StealthPolarBear · 22/05/2019 09:53

Apparently the top civil servant in Brussels is expecting a no deal and predicting bad things to come.
Although again its in their interests to say that to us.

{Although again its in their interests to say that to us.}

Not really. The gross stupidity of the UK government is causing a lot of problems in the EU. You need to get over the the 'Us' against 'them' mentality and understand that currently the UK is part of the EU.

StealthPolarBear · 22/05/2019 10:52

I am just trying to not be naive :) if it was up to me, junker for prime minister and I'd throw myself on the eus mercy. No us against them here

The calculation for pro-Remain MPs must be interesting ATM.

As I see it, the revised May deal essentially gives many among our parliamentarians more of what they say they want. As evidence for this, witness the droves of Conservative MPs who previously supported her deal, running away from it now!

The other thing I don't really get is that May's deal is the best defence against "no deal" that there currently is, this has been the case for ages. If her proposition is voted on and she loses (v. likely IMO) she'll simply be replaced as Conservative leader, most likely by someone who is more committed to a still harder Brexit.

1tisILeClerc · 22/05/2019 11:17

{she'll simply be replaced as Conservative leader, most likely by someone who is more committed to a still harder Brexit.}

With the same problem is that the WA is sitting on the table in the EU waiting for the UK to sign.
Theresa's 'great announcement' yesterday was nothing new, just a fancy bow and glitter to put around the WA. All the 'negotiations' that she was alluding to come AFTER the WA is signed.
The EU know that it will be carnage and so they are sticking to the 'sign the WA' line, very sensibly.

LouiseCollins28 · 22/05/2019 11:21

Agree completely, this makes perfect sense from their POV.

From the point of view of pro-Remain MPs here who ought to be thinking about the next Conservative leader being in favour of leaving with "no deal", refusing the offer makes less sense, to me.

jasjas1973 · 22/05/2019 11:25

The Tory MPs now running away from the revised deal is because they want May gone asap.

All the WA gives is another 18 months, there is no certainty that we would end up with any sort deal at the end of this, as you say a hardliner will be in charge during and beyond this negotiating period.

She has offered no more to the the remain MPs than they could have done by voting through an amendment on a second vote.

The environmental and workers rights stuff can be ripped up by any future PM/Govt.

BubblesBuddy · 22/05/2019 17:31

Rumour on most radio platforms is that many senior ministers are asking TM to go. Possibly in the morning.

StealthPolarBear · 22/05/2019 17:32

They've been asking her to go for months. Is this new?
Then we'll be treated to the horror that is boris

OP posts:
fairweathercyclist · 22/05/2019 17:35

Remainers would rather a hard Brexit than her deal

Not this remainer.

Anyway, we can leave the EU without a deal, and a week or month later we'll have signed it because we'll have to. I am still waiting for MPs to grasp this very straight-forward fact.

bellinisurge · 22/05/2019 17:41

I'm willing to support WA as well. Smacks of not paying attention tothink that Remainers prefer no Deal to WA.
Leavers: this shit is on you.
