Candidates for the Brexit Party - what are they like?

Sycamorish · 15/05/2019 10:12

Here are a few of the candidates standing for the Brexit Party in the upcoming European elections.

Henrik Overgaard Nielsen
An NHS Dentist and trade union representative who is a Danish national.

James Wells
A civil servant who was the Head of UK Trade at the ONS, Office of National Statistics.

John Longworth
Former head of British Chambers of Commerce.

Elizabeth Babade
A Nigerian-born lawyer.

Alka Sehgal Cuthbert
An educationalist.

Anne Widdecombe
An old Tory.

Lance Forman
CEO of a London smoked salmon producer.

Lance Forman is Jewish and has family who survived the holocaust. I mention this because he had a swastika painted on his workplace recently – presumably because he is standing for the Brexit Party.
It is common on MN for posters to refer to the Brexit Party as fascists. Anyone who does this should take a good hard look at their prejudices. The truth is that the Brexit Party candidates are diverse: and include experts from all fields including dentists, doctors, teachers, nurses, business people, lawyers and experts on UK trade. What do they have in common? They want the UK to leave the EU.

Alka Sehgal Cuthbert
An educationalist.

Isn't she, like Claire Fox and I believe other BXP candidates, also an ex member of the IRA-supporting revolutionary communist party?

Mistigri · 15/05/2019 10:22

And here's Private Eye on how Fox and her former RCP colleagues now at Spiked supported genocide in eastern Europe, as well as terrorism in Ireland.

Well if the UK leaves none of them will be MEPs so a significant part of any debate disappears completely.
Some of them might actually have positive views about the direction of Europe (if the UK were to remain).
Maybe put up a summary of each of their manifesto pledges to see what others think?

Mistigri · 15/05/2019 10:25

Maybe put up a summary of each of their manifesto pledges

You're trolling now ;)

There is no manifesto because as soon as they have to put forward a manifesto, this curious allowance of far right and hard left will fall apart.

Mistigri · 15/05/2019 10:25

Allowance? Alliance! (My iPad hates me).

1tisILeClerc · 15/05/2019 10:27

The EP welcomes reasoned debate especially when it is backed up by facts. Having MEPs like Farage who are not prepared to put real effort into the job is pointless.
Of course the EP can survive having extremist views put forward as it is democratic, but for any views to actually make it to legislation they will have to be approved by the whole parliament.

This acceptance of armed struggle shall I euphemistically call it also puts me off voting for Corbyn / McDonnell' s Labour though.

I was pretty appalled when Diane Abbott (who I grew up with on a pedestal which is always a mistake in truth) thought it appropriate to put the case for Mao.

In regard to the specific Brexit issue that draws this group of folk with disparate backgrounds together I' m more concerned at the disater capitalism types.

AGoodWench · 15/05/2019 10:36

I meant "disaster" of course.

1tisILeClerc · 15/05/2019 11:23

Corbyn and Labour although different in direction are simply stirring stuff around which is OK for a country that is essentially 'stable', which the UK is not, currently.
Leaving the EU will be a seismic shift as EVERYTHING is up for grabs at once, at a point where the world politics is becoming more unstable than for a couple of decades and with the volatility of the Orange American deliberately rocking the boat, now is not a good time to go sailing.
Leavers seem to be under the impression that things will stay largely as they are with perhaps a few less EU immigrants and a handful of hardly noticeable changes (for most). This will not be the case, many things will change, and most will not be for the better. We could start off with the price hikes (possibly 10%) as tariffs change. Various foods disappearing from shelves, problems getting spare parts for cars etc, none of which are catastrophic on their own but when put together will be more than noticeable.
Then of course no one has suggested really improving the NHS or the situation outside the South East.

Sycamorish · 15/05/2019 11:25

Interesting responses. Here are a few more Brexit MEP candidates for you to find smears about (if you can!):

James Glancy
Ex royal marine and conservationist @jaglancy (awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross)

June Mummery
MD of a fish market business and successful campaigner against electric pulse fishing.

Christina Johnson
Former NHS staff nurse.

Matthew Patten
Business and charity director

Sycamorish
We want to see their manifestos and what they are standing for.
Anyone who can stand and make a positive contribution to the wellbeing of the largest number of EU citizens is welcome.
If they are going to be destructive and negative then they can f* off.

Sycamorish · 15/05/2019 13:20

They are there to represent voters who want to leave the EU.

bellinisurge · 15/05/2019 14:04

And yet they are standing for the Brexit Party. Nope, I don't care about their personal history.

NoYo · 15/05/2019 14:11

I'm voting for the Brexit Party.
I hope they do really well.

Trying to persuade my DH to vote for them too Smile

NoBaggyPants · 15/05/2019 14:19

They are there to represent voters who want to leave the EU.

How does taking a salary from the EU count as representing those who do not want us to be members?

How will they vote on matters of consumer protections, tax transparency, regional development?

Who funds them?

woman19 · 15/05/2019 14:50

An old Tory
Who chained up women prisoners in labour.

Stilltalkstotrees · 15/05/2019 15:47

They are there to represent voters who want to leave the EU.

No they aren’t. They are there (if elected) to represent the interests of their constituents at the European Parliament.

Sycamorish · 15/05/2019 17:31

Who funds them?
They have 100,000 registered supporters who have each paid 25 pounds.
They also have a big donation declared from ex Tory donor Hosking.

Who funds the lib dems?

OP posts:
1tisILeClerc · 15/05/2019 17:41

How are the manifestos coming along, I haven't seen any yet.

Ces6 · 15/05/2019 17:51

The fishing industry always gets touted as something that Brexit will save (doubtful) but the TEFL sector is worth far more and will be severely affected by Brexit.

1tisILeClerc · 15/05/2019 17:56

IIRC the fishing industry only brings in about 4 times the amount of the bailout that the Steelworks in Scunthorpe is wanting.
While it may be an 'emotional' thing, it is hardly mega business.
The fishermen were happy enough to sell their boats and quotas in the past.

Dyrne · 15/05/2019 18:03

This is weird.

Like, I get not judging an entire party by its odious leader; but listing out specific qualities of people as though they must be good people and beyond reproach is odd.

If you described a “vegetarian, art lover, decorated war veteran” he sounds brilliant, until you learn it’s describing Hitler. (Note - am not comparing any of the Brexit party to Hitler; just using an extreme example)

Like, you can be a good person on paper and still be a twat. You can be black and racist, you can be a woman and a misogynist etc.

Coppersulphate · 15/05/2019 18:06

They are a good cross section of society.
My postal vote has already gone. Naturally I voted for the Brexit party
