EU elections-how to vote?

BercowsSilkTie · 11/04/2019 16:34

I've never voted in the EU elections before but want to do so this time round. I'm registered to vote and have my polling card for the local elections. Do I have to register specifically for the EU ones? Do they campaign? I've never known of anything locally before but to be fair, until the last couple of years, I haven't had much interest in politics.

You'll get a polling card through the post telling you when and where.
I already have my local election one.
You don't need them to vote but it makes life easier for those manning your polling station.
I've voted in loads (I'm old) and don't recall it being any different to other elections.
If the parties can afford it, you will get bumf through your letter box. You might find more about who's running on the website of your local paper.

bellinisurge · 11/04/2019 16:45

You get a separate polling card in case that's not clear. They would be on different days.

Peregrina · 11/04/2019 17:10

No, you are on the register if you have received your poll card for the local elections, and you will get another one for the EU elections.

BercowsSilkTie · 11/04/2019 17:16

Great, thank you. I'm pretty sure I've never had one for EU ones before but have always been registered to vote.

I didn't know we voted in the EU, I thought we were supposed to be leaving.
I vote for general elections and local sometimes, but cba really, all a bunch of liars.

MockerstheFeManist · 11/04/2019 17:19

If you are on the UK Electoral Roll and live in the UK then you will get a polling card. (And should have done so in 2014)

Read the ballot paper carefully. It is an AMS list system. You vote once for a party list or an independent non-party candidate.

Here's a link which might be useful?
Find your MEPs.

BercowsSilkTie · 11/04/2019 17:36

Ah, I was embroiled in court battle o Er the children at that time and had just found out I was unexpectedly pregnant so it passed me by Blush
I've just googled the current MEPs for the north west and am now confused by the different parties as not just labour, LIBDem and labour, green, ind etc. I'll be doing some research on what's what and who's who tonight.

What do MEPs do?

Topseyt · 11/04/2019 17:53

If you are on the electoral register you will get a polling card as you do for any election in the UK. Not strictly necessary to produce one when you get to the polling station, but it makes life easier.

Anyone who stands for election on a remain ticket is likely to get my vote.

A lot of people are saying that they have never voted in the European Parliament elections, I notice. I presume that many of them are the same people who want to leave the EU because they say it is undemocratic.

Not saying that is necessarily true for you, OP. I am just musing. Maybe this time around the turnout will be higher than usual, as perhaps more people will realise that it is actually quite important, is one way of making your voice heard etc. Perhaps now more than ever.

BercowsSilkTie · 11/04/2019 18:13

A Remain candidate will get my vote too. Staunch remainer here!

bellinisurge · 11/04/2019 18:16

You vote UKIP, @mummmy2017 if you like the overtly racist scumbags they are now employing. Don't you mean the Brexit Party (Farage's lot)?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 11/04/2019 18:19

I always use my vote, no matter what the election, but I genuinely don’t remember voting for MEPs before. Upon checking the last date it coincided with the local elections so I imagine I was more interested in that and can’t remember who got my cross for the European elections. I’ve just checked the link above and the only candidates I have even heard of (and of them I’ve heard a lot!) are Kippers. Literally none of the other candidates have ever had any presence locally and certainly haven’t campaigned.

Topseyt · 11/04/2019 18:25

Mummy2017, vote what you like obviously, but I will not be voting for a band of racist twats. Nor will I be voting for Farage's new Brexit Party.

I think it is richly ironic that UKIP operate out of the European Parliament, which they are at pains to say should not exist and they don't believe in it. Hypocrites! The Brexit Party will be no different.

They only get the seats they do there because the voting system is not First Past the Post.

Topseyt · 11/04/2019 18:26

Should have reiterated there that my vote will be firmly in the remain camp.

MockerstheFeManist · 11/04/2019 18:43

You should vote, or Mrs Pankhurst will have thrown herself under Mr Lloyd-George all for nothing.

And then when you've voted, do not call anyone who voted for someone or something else a fool or a traitor.

Peregrina · 11/04/2019 20:02

I know that one of my MEPs, Catherine Bearder works jolly hard. I know another, Nigel Farage is a lazy arse.

Yaralie · 12/04/2019 13:54

Catherine Bearder is a Liberal Democrat. Let's hope every single Remainer votes for the Liberal Democrats in the EU elections. The LibDems are the party which believes in being part of the greatest international Union the world has ever seen and contributing positively so that continues to be a strong force for the good of all.

If you want to Remain in the EU, on NO ACCOUNT should you even consider voting Labour or Conservative.

Just remember how all the votes for these parties in the 2017 GE have been claimed by the quitters as giving a mandate to leave. Vote positively for the LibDems.

FishesaPlenty · 12/04/2019 14:50

It could be the ultimate tactical, protest, meaningless vote but it would be heartwarming to see Farage wiped out by 20m remainers' votes.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 12/04/2019 14:57

Just to say that if you live in Woking, you need photo ID to vote. I imagine if you live there, you know this already, but if you don't have a passport or driving licence you can apply for a voter ID card.

It's a pilot - I know this is already the case in NI but I could imagine it causing some difficulties if people are turned away and then it's a very close result in a local election ward!

Miljah · 12/04/2019 17:26

mummy2017 "Vote UKIP ... In or out of EU they will be a thorn in Brussels side...."

Out of interest, how do you think that will play once, if we ever Brexit Wink, we have to do trade deals with the EU?

Do you suppose they'll smile like an indulgent uncle at our infantile 'thorn in their side' antics?

Or do you think they'll give us the spanking we deserve?

The critical thinking skills are low in this one.

mummmy2017 · 12/04/2019 23:48

The EU have already played chicken... They lost...
There is no new deal, no way forward, May is a fool. 4th vote, 5th vote.. what 7th time lucky on WA..
All your doing is kicking the can up the load... No deal it will be...
