Local elections dilemma

If I vote for a Labour or Tory councillor in the local elections, will I be told that I have voted in support of Brexit?

Yes, I think you will. In fact I'm sure you will.

Inacountrygarden · 10/04/2019 22:31

I'm so fed up with politicians saying that 80% of the electorate voted for Brexit supporting parties in the last GE so we must all support Brexit.
I couldn't possibly help give them another opportunity.

It's a dilemma because I like our local councillor.

You can always add an extra box marked Non of the above, and vote for that 😀👍👍😎

Mammajay · 10/04/2019 22:37

It won't make any difference.

TheSandman · 10/04/2019 22:47

I think the only safe vote in England that won't tar you with that brush is to vote Green.

Peregrina · 10/04/2019 22:52

As someone pointed out on one of the other threads: neither of the two major parties, Tory or Labour, won, so the public did not fully endorse either of their manifestos, so there was insufficient support for Brexit. We have been too slow to realise this.

BTW spoilt votes are counted, so IMO it's always worth a protest if you can't vote for anyone.

Peregrina · 10/04/2019 22:54

In England - LibDem or Green, Wales add PC, Scotland add SNP.
Or maybe an Independent will be standing, but IMO they are usually Tories who have fallen out with their local party for some reason.

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2019 22:59

It's the council elections- they have no impact on Brexit.

Vote for whoever you want at a local level. I might vote 'none of the above' for the first time ever, which is depressing.

All well and good but we're not having local Elections in Scotland or Wales, only bits of England and Northern Ireland.

78percentLindt · 10/04/2019 23:04

Trouble is, the main parties treat local elections as a barometer of their popularity. Locally Lib Dems and Labour are in an alliance but have seriously messed up recently- some major planning faux pas. In normal times I would consider voting Tory but have no intention in giving them any succour.
Looks like abstaining for me!

Windowsareforcheaters · 10/04/2019 23:04

I know that and you know that but it won't stop politicians in London claiming we voted to support Brexit.

Peregrina · 10/04/2019 23:04

Sorry, didn't realise about Scotland and Wales. Next time maybe, if Brexit is still rumbling on then! Grin

Not directly but could you imagine the sheer trouser-shitting terror that would happen in Labour and Tory Party HQs if every single seat went Green? It's not going to happen, but these elections will be scrutinised like no other local elections have been for years as a straw in the wind of the Brexit heartlands.

If you hate Brexit you have to vote to send that message.

Peregrina · 10/04/2019 23:08

Sandman - I like it!

Inacountrygarden · 10/04/2019 23:19

Nope, I'm not going to have my vote exploited as support for Brexit. I'll be voting Green - and will be very happy if Caroline Lucas takes that as support for her!

Love the thought of trouser shitting terror in Westminster Sandman!

Have you even looked who's standing? You may not have a green candidate standing.

Peregrina · 10/04/2019 23:42

Have you even looked who's standing?

Locally one of the leaflets put out says, 'Labour can't win here'. Perfectly true, because they haven't put up a candidate!

Random18 · 10/04/2019 23:44

I will be voting Green for the 1st time ever.
It’s a strong local candidate who cares for the community.

Being local is very important to me for council.

NameChangeSameRage · 11/04/2019 05:25

I seem to have a choice of Labour, Conservative or an independent that I can't find any information on at the moment.
I'll have to go labour, won't I? I would have happily gone Green or Lib Dem.

bellinisurge · 11/04/2019 06:20

We have a massive local planning issue that has pissed everyone off. I will vote with that in mind.

flabbythighs · 11/04/2019 06:34

Living locally is a pre requisite to being a local council candidate so all your council candidates will be local people

Random18 · 11/04/2019 06:37

@flabby - yes I know.

But I do not really want a councillor who lives across the city. I much prefer a councillor who lives in the local area. It was a deciding factor for me on the last local election and will be again.

So UKIP can bugger off Grin

Tanith · 11/04/2019 06:51

If you like your local councillor and they work hard for you, then vote for them. Why get rid of a decent councillor and risk a useless one?

These are local elections.
People here voted according to Party politics and got a corrupt Council that has almost bankrupted it while cutting vital services and allowing developers to do as they liked.
People can’t wait to sling them out on their ear!

Mammajay · 11/04/2019 08:51

Surely liberal democrats are a remain party.

FishesaPlenty · 11/04/2019 08:56

No it isn't.
