General Election vs Second Referendum

Which would you prefer?, for me a general election.

OP posts:
GoldenPineapples · 03/04/2019 19:43

I wouldn't vote for corbyn (or labour ever) and I wouldn't vote for May. So a general election would be pointless for me.

How does a GE solve Brexit? I'm sure I must have missed the answer but the EU keep stating it's commitment to the WA or No Deal, what would change?

Eateneasterchocsalready · 03/04/2019 19:48

Neither.

bellinisurge · 03/04/2019 20:11

Another for neither. But PV if I had to choose.

MIdgebabe · 03/04/2019 20:22

Referendum because it’s a single issue

MIdgebabe · 03/04/2019 20:23

AND it would force them to spell out the options , whereas they’d can continue to be vague if it’s a general election

NotAChanceOfQuiet · 03/04/2019 20:29

Referendum. Labour losing Scotland will probably force a Tory majority in Westminster and give them carte blanche to do as they like because the people backed their mandate.

jasjas1973 · 03/04/2019 20:45

Referendum, deliverable options means brexit will be resolved one way or another.
a GE is likely to return another hung Parliament and more of chaos.

Penguinpandarabbit · 03/04/2019 20:49

Neither.

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 03/04/2019 20:51

Referendum

DailyMailSucksWails · 03/04/2019 20:54

I can't understand how GE would fix Brexit. No partly will run on a straight promise to revoke, there will just be various flavours of claiming "We'll be the best negotiators!" & "Let's have another vote." Most people vote tribally or across a broad range of policies, not just Brexit, so would be little change in current balance of MPs.

They need(ed) a preferential voting system in Parliament, on Brexit options. Like a presidential run-off system (eg., France). That narrowed the options down to just 2 (probably would have ended up being 1) Customs Union instead of WA vs. 2) May's WA). MP's would have been forced to vote for 1 of the 2 options.

Is there a constitutional reason why Parliament couldn't have followed a process to arrive at 2 choices like that?

Mistigri · 03/04/2019 22:01

There is going to have to be a GE, possibly several. No party will be able to negotiate the future relationship and implement Brexit without a working majority.

But can we have a try at a PV first please.

woman19 · 03/04/2019 23:12

What sort of country is not allowed to vote?

TheNumberfaker · 04/04/2019 01:01

Referendum to sort this single issue out. Then a GE to sort the country out.

gluteustothemaximus · 04/04/2019 01:55

I don't think a referendum would sort things out. I did. But then because perhaps we're assuming remain would win, people will vote to leave and the leave would be a higher percentage.

Piers Morgan said he voted remain, but would vote to leave if asked again. The amount of people who agreed with him was ridiculous.

The country is so divided and angry. No one is listening to each other. It’s awful.

MayhemNowCertain · 04/04/2019 03:15

Neither. At last general election both Conservative and Labour agreed to honour the result of the referendum. So what difference would a GE make?

If Conservative or Labour agree to , or even suggest, a second referendum then it is an acknowledgement that they lied before previous GE.

No evidence that people would change their vote in a second referendum. Even if some have would it be enough to reverse the result of the first referendum?

If it was a small majority in favour of remain would those who voted leave not present the same argument as those who voted remain in that a small majority does not represent the will of the people and demand a 3rd referendum?

Two choices as I see it;

WA

or

No deal

Problem is that MP's have rejected both. Hence the process has come to a standstill.

polarpig · 04/04/2019 03:43

I can't see the point in wasting money on either when any government will do whatever they want regardless of the public views.

As demonstrated by fact that it is approaching 3 years since the referendum and no progress has been made.

megletthesecond · 04/04/2019 07:10

Neither. Revoke.

Peregrina · 04/04/2019 08:10

Revoke, and then commission the work that Cameron should have done about the various options. If leaving without a deal is one, then start to tell us how we will obtain medications, what our fishing and farming industries are likely to be able to achieve - not unicorn stuff, but genuine proposals. Then we could have an informed vote. If people would really prefer an American health care system and American food standards then so be it.

Holidayshopping · 04/04/2019 09:11

Revoke

Then overhaul and reform the entire voting system and then a GE.

MayhemNowCertain · 04/04/2019 09:21

but genuine proposals

Too many scenarios to include on one piece of paper. Both the leave and the remain campaign were given the opportunity to present their arguments and voters have the right to choose.

Not possible to please everyone at the same time. If a policy results in more winners than losers then the policy is correct and should be pursued.

greathat · 04/04/2019 09:21

In a perfect world go back in time and don't do the referendum. It's already cost thousands of people their jobs, and the economy millions. A no deal is economic suicide, but basically whichever way we go the country is fucked one way or another. The idea of Gove or Boris leading the country fills me with rage. As there's no time machines let's have another referendum, let the brits living in Europe vote too as this cocks up their lives too.

Was reading something the other day where someone voted leave because the roads had less potholes in Spain so clearly Britain was paying to fix Spanish roads

MayhemNowCertain · 04/04/2019 09:24

As there's no time machines let's have another referendum

And if the result is leave again then what?
