We've had a new thread pretty much everyday for the last week or so, so I'm short on inspiration.

There haven't been too many new developments today. There have been two ministerial resignations. Both were ministers close to Boris Johnson.

We had a vote to add an extension if we still have no deal agreed at the end of next week to the Withdrawal Bill. May has said she will do this anyway; this would merely tie her hands. It passed by 5 votes. It now is fast tracked to the committee stage and third reading.

A business of the house amendment by Benn to secure a debate and Indicative Vote 3 next week failed after a speakers vote. Bercow followed convention and didn't create a majority where there was not one (though under Erskine May he is free to do the opposite at his discretion).

Corbyn has met May for talks which have been described as construction, though we have no further details though curiously Emily Thornberry put out a statement demanding a ref on whatever was decided which suggests Corbyn isn't keen on the idea. Rumours are of Schrodingers Customs Union: somehow being in a union but not a union. It can't be called a customs union. And Liam Fox has said Corbyn can't have his union. Though he may have a vested interest as he loses his job if Corbyn gets his way.

Oh and the Commons photocopier broke so no one knows what is currently supposed to be happening.

Otherwise it's been a quiet day, all things considered. Too quiet?

Full Fact have done a fact check on no deal. The comments on Facebook are... I’d say hilarious but are actually terrifying/depressing.

Not sure whether to be pleased the Cooper Bill passed, scared that it just passed by 1 vote or, nervous that this is just another step along the way to an ultimate aim of Parliament not to deliver Brexit Confused. My levels of trust in our elected representatives are so low just now.

LouiseC a familiar feeling here! (Remainer)

Peregrina · 04/04/2019 07:56

I think both Labour & Conservative could be finished. And wouldn't be surprised if Labour went first.

To me, this sounds like the genuine will of the people. This has been going on for a decade now with neither major party being able to get a good majority, to produce a "strong and stable" Government that is the supposed strength of the FPTP system (i.e. enough votes to bludgeon their policies through.) Young people are now getting active and on the streets but the protests are issues like climate change. It really is time for change. Let's get this Brexit business killed off and start looking at the real issues facing people and the planet, with parties fit for purpose for today.

Much though I find it amusing to watch the voting, with 'the Noes have it, the noes have it, Unlock" from John Bercow, it really is time to start doing something different.

frumpety · 04/04/2019 07:56

One of many things I don't understand about Brexit supporters, especially those espousing no deal, is how can they know the facts when there are so many NDA's in place. NDA's stop the general public and business knowing the facts. They do not stop the EU knowing the facts, so it cannot be said that the government needs to hide those facts from a negotiating or security point of view. What is the benefit of keeping 'the people' in the dark ?

Morning. A nice cheery story to start your day.

Although I see that Leave with 52% which is less than 65% didn't get a majority so we don't have to leave the EU after all. Hurrrahhh!

On the plus side; it's a learning curve about the constitutional checks and balances of liberal representative democracies?

Other regimes, are of course, available. Wink
Not of course, in the EU Smile
That's sort of the point. Confused

More people need to attend my Functional Maths classes. I do a special bit on what "greater than" means (a surprising number of people think it includes "is equal to", and will even argue the point), also another bit about how to spot when politicians (and others) use statistics in a deliberate attempt to mislead.
About to donate to Led by Donkeys again. I might cancel my TV licence and just give them an equivalent amount for the vastly better quality of information and entertainment they provide.

Peregrina · 04/04/2019 08:06

I cannot understand why the Brexiters are so wedded to no deal. We have heard about the difficulty of getting medications in and I would bet that every single one of us is either heavily dependent on medication themselves or has a friend or family member who is. These are people whose lives will be seriously compromise or will die without. That issue alone would make me want to change a Leave vote. Telling them it will be a success in 50 years will be small comfort to them.

Random18 · 04/04/2019 08:08

@Sunshine, the fact that TM has went against the majority of her party and said no to No Deal and reached across
The house.

That says it all to me about No Deal.

TheElementsSong · 04/04/2019 08:08

Has the foundation of maths/statistics altered overnight and I wasn't aware

It's the new Brexitannian maths. I might have to start a Brexitannian maths textbook.

52% for Brexit: (see also 17 million) a vast and overwhelming majority, which instantly obliterates the existence of the other percentage therefore equalling 100%, and which requires the most extreme interpretation conceivable.

48% for Remain: (see also 16 million) a non-existent entity which ceased to exist on 24 June 2016 therefore equalling 0%, whilst also bearing vast powers of negative emotion able to overwhelm the positivity of the now-100% (see above) in Talking Britain Down and Killing Brexit Fairies.

52% of Labour voters for Remain: a made-up number meant to illustrate that this is scarcely significant at all and should be ignored.

65% of Labour voters for Remain: another made-up number meant to illustrate that the maker-upper does not understand mathematics.

LonelyTiredandLow · 04/04/2019 08:15

Martin Hewitt, said people should think carefully to avoid inciting others to violence.

But Mr Hall said he has warned those in charge of supply chains for food, fuel and other essentials to make their own preparations as officers will only be used "if absolutely necessary".

It doesn't sound like a lot of officers really, does it? Not for a population of 65k (or should I round that down? Looks like a bit of a majority... Wink )

PickleSarnie · 04/04/2019 08:15

Crossed post @Apileofballyhoo. I need to learn to type faster!

LonelyTiredandLow · 04/04/2019 08:16

Thank you for the 14! Really off now! Grin

Sostenueto · 04/04/2019 08:17

sunshine all MPs in the HoC are well insulated against the effects of a no deal Brexit. They have MONEY! People like my family live in poverty. Do you really think my family can afford to stock up or have endless credit cards or are able to cope with a 10% rise in food prices and food shortages and medication shortages? We haven't even left yet but 2 of my meds are hard to get. One helps me to walk the other keeps me from dying!
We all know what the vote was and I say to you what a raving brexiteer MP shouted out in Parliament last night ' forgive them for they know not what they do!'
Sorry to rant at you.Flowers

jasjas1973 · 04/04/2019 08:18

My levels of trust in our elected representatives are so low just now

Don't get at all, even if brexit doesn't happen or is a BINO, leave voters will have the Brexit party to vote for at the next GE and if the majority really want to leave the EU, then despite the FPTP system, you'll get enough MPs to get what you want.
Given the numbers who want No-Deal, you should at most only have a 2 year delay.

For remainers, once brexit happens, that's it, there will be no rejoin for many years, probably most on here will be dead, this is why remainers are fighting so hard for what they believe in, there is no second chance.

Morning. A nice cheery story to start your day.*

That story is shocking. Read it. Doesn't dare say that the violence is entirely one side, and implies that the SODEM guy has been guilty of public order offences.

I might have to mute sky on twitter now (already have the BBC muted) and confine myself to foreign news sources, the FT and Ian Dunt.

Apileofballyhoo · 04/04/2019 08:28

DH said the police have warned MPs to tone down the rhetoric - was just on the BBC News. Did anyone see it?
