Surely they can't get that done before the 12th and we will crash out?

Bump

They don't think it will help. It's a power grab (or an attempt at one)

The80sweregreat · 01/04/2019 06:44

I've no idea. Corbyn is obsessed with having more humiliation. The only upside is he might resign if they lose big , but I wouldn't bet my house on it.
I don't hate him but his not who is like to see in power. With a new man or woman in charge there may be a chance.
Only thing that might save them if they put 2nd referendum on the table in their manifesto but will leavers still vote for them?

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 06:46

But even if they did that it would be too late surely?!
There was a thread the other day asking who you'd vote for in a GE and people said "anyone who promises remain". I just don't understand, or are they assuming we'll get another extension off the back of this?

OP posts:
The80sweregreat · 01/04/2019 06:48

Nobody could promise remain without another vote could they?

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 06:52

I have no idea. But I certainly don't think they could have a GE done and dusted by a week on Friday.

strawberrypenguin · 01/04/2019 06:57

I think I'm a GE was called the EU would grant an extension so it could happen. They wouldn't be pleased about it but I think they would

Iggly · 01/04/2019 06:59

The EU would grant an extension.

Personally I think that the Tories should be left to crash and burn but I’m so worried about our country.

Schools and hospitals continue to crumble, violent crime is rising. It’s a shit show hidden by Brexit

Mistigri · 01/04/2019 07:27

If a GE is called before Apr 10th the EU will definitely extend A50 for this, on condition that we also participate in European Parliament elections. The EU will 100% not stand in the way of a member state's legitimate democratic process.

It'll need to be by Apr 10th though because of the European council meeting. If we don't decide to run EP elections we are out.

Quartz2208 · 01/04/2019 07:31

Yes a delay would be granted

As for why because he thinks it’s probably his best chance of getting into 10 Downing Street

Holidayshopping · 01/04/2019 07:35

Er, well-no.

I’m fairly sure if an election was called though, an extension would be granted by the EU.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 07:39

So this is where I'm confused. I understood unless we agreed a deal we were definitely out no exceptions on the 12th.the goalposts keep moving from my perspective

OP posts:
Quartz2208 · 01/04/2019 07:43

I think the goalposts are (rightly) that we can’t keep on delaying and delaying and going round and round in circles we need to make a decision (including the MEP election). A general election is a decision

noblegiraffe · 01/04/2019 07:45

I think if we have a deal agreed by April 12th then we’re out on May 22nd and don’t have to have EU elections.

If we don’t have a deal agreed by then, then we have to request a longer extension and start organising EU elections, or crash out with no deal.

Mistigri · 01/04/2019 07:49

UNLESS we agree to EP elections we are definitely out.

IF we agree to EP elections and want an extension for a legitimate democratic process (referendum or GE), there will be an extension.

Mistigri · 01/04/2019 07:51

Not sure that's right. They won't wait until 22nd May because of the risk we revoke without having legislated for EP elections.

noblegiraffe · 01/04/2019 07:56

We need from April 12th to May 22nd to sort all the legislation for exiting according to the deal. We can’t agree a deal by April 12th and leave immediately.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 07:58

A GE is not a direct decision though. We had one in 2017. Just another stalling technique

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 01/04/2019 08:01

But if we stall for a GE, we have to have EU elections and a LONG extension. We can’t just say ‘let’s have a general election and we’ll definitely sort it out in the summer’.

Mistigri · 01/04/2019 08:02

The EU would see it as a legitimate democratic process and they won't stand in the way as long as we also hold the other necessary democratic process ie European elections.

After the next European council meeting on the 10th that window closes. So our MPs need to get their skates on.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 08:13

I see, I think. So we have an election and then the whole mess starts up again. Fuck.

OP posts:
Mistigri · 01/04/2019 08:17

Mess is guaranteed whatever happens, unless we revoke A50 (even that would be quite messy, but for a shorter time).

Whatever happens a new vote will be required, either a GE or a referendum. I think even if the govt panic-revoked (unlikely) it would have to seek a new mandate from the electorate afterwards.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2019 08:32

Surely if we leave with no deal on the 12th another vote is not required!

OP posts:
woman19 · 01/04/2019 08:34

Sadly, the EU needs to get rid of us. Now.

I can see why.

Next week is very very likely to be a crash out.
