An alternative German view on Brexit ...

I think this is what you call Schadenfreude.

user1498572889 · 30/03/2019 16:54

@Neome. I don’t do religion either. 🙂

@outwiththecrowd. That was funny. It shouldn’t be but it was. 😂

I've seen this she makes many pertinent points .

It's an excellent speech and also belies what we have been led to believe as our value in Europe... IE we are nothing... EU won't care if we leave. . shocking that we are worth 19??? Smaller countries? I may have got that wrong...

German economy is already shrinking.... car market shrinking....

ETc Etc Etc.

OP. You could post anything on here and sadly our remain friends will never listen to a word. Doesn't matter who says it .

They will trot out same line's over and over...

@onalongsabbatical. The problem with compulsory voting is it will force people like me into making a decision they don’t actually agree with or care about. Surely then the whole voting process is devalued. My employment involves me talking to a lot of people and understandably Brexit has been a large topic of conversation much to my dismay. I don’t give an opinion because I don’t have one but a lot and I mean a lot say they voted to leave because they wanted their country back. I don’t know where they want it back from and I don’t agree with voting for this reason but surely people like that and people like me should be actively discouraged from voting.

That clip is sadly pretty accurate.
If the UK wants to be taken seriously it will have a lot of patching up to do.

{German economy is already shrinking.... car market shrinking....}
The good news (for BMW) is that it is in the planning stages of a large production plant in China, where new sales are, so it can close plants in the UK without a problem. BMW is waiting for the announced regulation change in China to be put into action.
Nissan in Sunderland is moving out in a few years time and new production will be based in Japan, much handier for the Chinese market.

I posted her speech because I thought it was interesting. It could have been anyone and I did not know then who she was. After it being rightly pointed out by @onalongsabbatical and my daughter that I should know who she was I stand by my first post that it is an interesting speech not good or bad but interesting. Just because I choose not to vote does not mean I did not try to make a decision. When a referendum was granted I read about what the EU does for us( I will admit to being completely ignorant before) and I read what we do for the EU. I then listened to the debates and decided that not only were these people who were telling us it would be great to leave and the people telling us it would be terrible to leave trying to persuade us they actually knew what would happen I think they actually believed what they were saying. I decided that no one can know if it will be a good or bad thing. I realised that it will no impact on me what so ever either way so I did not vote. I do not regret it and if there is a second referendum I still will not vote. But I feel that people who will be affected and care about this have every right to vote on it as long as they have correct information. People should only vote if they understand that how they vote makes a difference to millions of people and vote with their head and not their heart.

What do your children say about you not voting?

blueskiesovertheforest · 30/03/2019 17:54

I live in Germany. I get asked every day why my country of origin actively voted for something so self destructive without a clue how it would work. The words Chaos and circus are usually mentioned, and verrückt...

blueskiesovertheforest · 30/03/2019 18:04

A couple of people have also asked me whether I'm safe... By which it turns out that they mean do I have German citizenship.

That German comedy clip was lame. Sometimes humour doesn't translate.

user1498572889 · 30/03/2019 22:45

@onalongsabbatical they don’t say anything I’ve never voted so it’s nothing different for them. I have always encouraged them to vote if any party or party policies appeal to them my choices are not theirs.
@SonEt. It was interesting because of my lack of interest I had never thought about how any other EU citizens might suffer financially because of Brexit. Of course I know that it is worrying for EU citizens that are here but in my apathy I had not taken into account that the billions we pay will have to be found elsewhere if we leave.
@blueskies. Chaos does seem like a very good description.

I live in Germany and polls here overwhelmingly say the German public oppose more concessions to the UK

In fact people think too many concessions have been made already and are fed up with wasting time on Brexit when the UK govt is just a shambles

That view you posted is about as typical as taking a rant from the far right Gerard Batten (umpteenth UKIP leader) to represent ordinary British people

BigChocFrenzy · 31/03/2019 00:32

However, I recently had the embarassing experience of being lectured by an AfD canvasser on how Britain is stupid not to realise its European roots & heritage
Lectured about British xenophobia Hmm by the AfD

The anti-German insults by some prominant Brexiters really pissed him off.

The AfD, like most populist parties, have abandoned previous ideas about maybe leaving the EU or even the Euro
Brexit has increased support for the EU in nearly all countries
Noone wants to be associated with the laughing stock that the UK has become over Brexit.

So they now want to change the EU instead, such as relaxing emission rules for car manufacturers, as well as blocking Muslim immigrants of course

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 31/03/2019 08:35

Can I add the view of a very well-informed German?

Sabine Weyand - EU Brexit Negotiator. I found her analysis of the complexities of Brexit illuminating and witty.

(She doesn't quite manage to do baubles like Mrs May though but she did her best.)

1tisILeClerc · 31/03/2019 09:06

Since that interview with Sabine Weyand the UK government seem to be less organised than before. That clip, she mentioned 60 days so is 2 months old and the UK gov have achieved nothing.
This is crucial as Sabine pointed out, as soon as the WA is signed, the UK MUST have a clear and viable plan.

1tisILeClerc · 31/03/2019 09:08

Unfortunately with her hairstyle and those glasses she does remind me of Thelma? from Scooby Doo.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 31/03/2019 09:13

True!

And, yes, the clip makes you realise that we've been stuck in a Brexit 'do loop' for absolutely ages.

As a member of the Lib-Dems I don't think I'll be rushing to join the Conservative Party, tempting as the idea is (not). Grin

Another Brit in Germany here - and all the people I know, or have met, who know I'm British ask me what the heck happened. Then they ask me if I'm ok and if I've done everything so that I can stay.

In fact my local authority contacted me (and my family, we're all Brits) at the beginning of February to say "if you apply for citizenship before the end of next week, we're fast tracking British applications to get them done by 29th March" and they did that so we could keep our British citizenship.

The German authorities have been more interested and taken more care of us than the British.

I was going through an airport in a EU capital last week and everyone who saw my British passport made some comment - and mostly it was the same thing. Aghast at what Britain has done and friendly enquiries to see if I'm ok.

Not like what my EU27 friends in the UK have reported.
