Is the current Brexit shambles going to be the catalyst for Scottish Independence?

(For clarity, commissioned by Rev Stu, not done by him)

HirplesWithHaggis · 24/03/2019 19:31

Why on earth would we want to peg our lovely new currency to a failing pound sterling? That would be madness. Shock Pegging to the Euro would make more sense

HirplesWithHaggis · 24/03/2019 19:33

As there's nowhere else to.put Trident, rUK can pay rent for the base for the decade or so it will take to dismantle them.

rollwiththis · 24/03/2019 19:46

Surely this would be dependent on what is decided during the separation process? Yes, like Cyprus, a sovereign base may be negotiated but given the anti trident feeling in Scotland and within the SNP I'd be very surprised.

It wouldn't be down to an independent Scotland to concern themselves with another country's storage problem.

In the interim, some form of Scots Pound will need to be issued and backed with the necessary reserves.

Hilarious, you mean what will happen to the British pound that is currently showing signs of instability when it can no longer depend on oil reserves.

The question is not if Scotland can be independent, but can it take the risk to stay in the U.K.

ssd · 24/03/2019 20:36

We need independence now this shit show from Westminster is doing us all no favours and independence is the only way to get away from it all
I just feel sorry for England as they will never be free of a Conservative government

LeesPostersAreInFrames · 24/03/2019 20:37

If Scotland is allowed a second referendum because things have changed and got clearer, can we have another one on brexit please?!

I wouldn't blame scotland for leaving the union after brexit. It's very obviously not what they wanted.

I'd quite like Nicola Sturgeon for PM

ssd · 24/03/2019 20:38

I'd bloody love Nicolas sturgeon for pm

ssd · 24/03/2019 20:45

I'd like to know why the UK is so desperate to keep hold of Scotland? The Snp seem to be treated with utter revulsion in the house of commons, yet they won't let Scotland leave?
Why is that?

Nanamum5 · 24/03/2019 21:04

What's not to like about having the Euro as currency?

JockTamsonsBairns · 24/03/2019 21:25

ssd I've often wondered the same. I genuinely don't understand it. I would've thought they'd be desperate to get rid of Scotland?

I live in England, so don't qualify for a vote in a potential IndyRef 2 - and find it difficult to gauge current feeling in Scotland, as I realise I live in a bit of an echo chamber with independence supporting family and friends. On the currency issue though, why would the Scots now be against adopting the Euro in the event of a Yes vote? Surely the Euro would be preferable to falling Sterling? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I admit to not being at all knowledgeable about the issues.

Horehound · 24/03/2019 21:26

I would be fine taking the euro. I dont get why anyone wouldnt be Confused

rollwiththis · 24/03/2019 21:34

Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

Darkbendis · 24/03/2019 22:03

I hope so. I don't mind taking the euro either, if necessary. I wouldn't cry if Scotland won't keep the subs, rUK can have them.

I'm pro-European Union but anti-Euro. It just doesn't work to mash a single currency across many different economies imo.

rollwiththis · 24/03/2019 23:23

Seems like it's working okay.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 24/03/2019 23:29

I hope to christ it doesn't.

I'd rather be in Britain and out of the EU than in the EU in an independent Scotland.

rollwiththis · 24/03/2019 23:42

@WaxOnFeckOff why?

OP posts:
HirplesWithHaggis · 24/03/2019 23:44

We could use the Euro, we could not join the Euro. But I'd prefer our own currency, definitely not pegged to the pound sterling.

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/03/2019 23:46

Oh, many many reasons. Why do you want independence from Britain but want to be tied to the EU?

DizzyPhillips · 24/03/2019 23:47

It would surely need to be a higher threshold than 50% for Yes to win. Unless brexit omnishambles has taught us nothing...

rollwiththis · 24/03/2019 23:58

It's hardly the same. That has to be my most hated argument in all this as if the EU functions as one big country. Are you honestly claiming that Germany or France are not autonomous independent countries because they are part of the EU? As it stands Scotland's interests are not adequately represented or considered by the United Kingdom.

Genuinely can I please hear your reasons? Even just one or two. I will admit to living in a bit of a bubble and I do not know anyone who feels as you do and I am keen to know why you feel as you do? @WaxOnFeckOff

I don't think the problem here is the narrow margin but the absolute lack of leadership and planning from the government. A truly strong and stable government with an ounce of ability should have been able to confidently steer even a narrow win through the process.

I keep looking at the PM of New Zealand and thinking Theresa should phone her for some advice.

OP posts:
DizzyPhillips · 25/03/2019 00:09

I think it certainly is one of the problems, although I can see why it would be convenient for Yes voters to say otherwise.
