Could Brexit be cancelled!?

The other threads are really long so I hope it's ok I start a new one with this exact question.

  1. Could the public be asked to re vote on Brexit?
  1. If the new vote favoured 'no brexit' would the EU have to accept we then wanted to stay!? Or could they demand we leave because we've pissed them off?
  1. Could parliament decide to vote to cancel Brexit by themselves!? Or would it have to go back to the public?
  1. Do you think a new vote to remain would lead to actual riots?

How does that deal with the Irish border issue?

missyfafa · 14/03/2019 08:46

No more referendums please! It was a stupid bloody idea in the first place and should never have happened...still I would be happy if they quietly forgot about leaving the EU and we all got back to normal. I like my olive oil and wine. Grin

Haha, easy Tiger!

@eurochick , WA deals with the UK/Ireland border issue as well as anything. I think we should have a border in the sea and make NI a special economic area. Tell the DUP to fuck off, they don't speak for NI.

BeersTonight2000 · 14/03/2019 09:02

you’re basically saying we’re tied to the EU forever no matter what.
I wouldn’t be happy with that even if I were a hardcore remainer

Geoffrey Cox, the attorney general, acknowledged that there is a risk of being permanently tied to EU under the terms of the WA. Probably explains why WA has been voted down twice. Even if WA does go through the border issue will still be present.

Hope there is a solution, but I don't what it would be.

BeersTonight2000 · 14/03/2019 09:05

I don't think that would solve anything.

bellinisurge · 14/03/2019 09:09

If the Tory party had a majority in Parliament this is precisely what would happen.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 14/03/2019 09:12

It could be cancelled but I don't think it will be. It will be delayed and the whole fucking farce will continue.

BeersTonight2000 · 14/03/2019 09:17

I think that too. Read an article on internet that since the referendum UK has lost between 500 and 700 million per week? If those figures are correct then a big chunk of the savings that are meant to come from leaving the EU have already gone.

There is an argument to bin Brexit on that basis alone, but what do you say to the 17.4 million who voted leave?

Would it? A lot of Tories are voting against the deal too.

That we tried, triggered Art 50, tried to get a deal acceptable to all sides but couldn't. So we'll stop trying to destroy the country and economy and move on?

Notstrongandstable · 14/03/2019 09:22

This, exactly. Does anyone think JRM et al give a flying fuck about NI? They're using the dependency on the DUP in parliament to further their own agenda.

bellinisurge · 14/03/2019 09:24

There are the usual rebels in the Tory party. They could be stopped/whipped (it's a Parliamentary term) into shape or have the whip dropped and lose Tory dosh. If it was only the ERG knobheads and not the DUP votes that mattered.

BeersTonight2000 · 14/03/2019 09:28

Think I would choose another referendum and hope the result was to remain as opposed to saying to voters that votes don't count. However, if result of second referendum is to leave UK is back to where it is now - arguing over how to leave.

bellinisurge · 14/03/2019 09:29

So support WA if you want to Leave. It is the only way that is feasible.

WizzyBee · 14/03/2019 09:31

What I find frustrating is that we supposedly can't have another referendum because 'you can't keep asking the question till you get the answer you want' but TM keeps getting parliament to vote on her same deal, which keeps getting voted down. Is she going to keep doing it until she gets the answer she wants?

And, why are the leavers worried about another referendum? Surely if it's such a good idea then 'the people' will vote leave again?

An interesting piece in the brexit-supporting Telegraph today-

"Unlike the path to reach this point, the process of revoking Article 50 would be fairly simple.

The government would send its notification to the European Council in writing – in much the same way as it started the process. The ECJ's ruling said that this notification must follow “a democratic process in accordance with national constitutional requirements”. While this part of the ruling is open to interpretation, it is logical that given the UK Supreme Court ruled that Article 50 could only be triggered with a vote of parliament, it would also need to be revoked by a vote of parliament.

It is also valuable to note that the court ruling stated the decision to revoke Article 50 must be “unequivocal and unconditional,” meaning that the UK would have to make clear that it wished to maintain its EU membership rather than revoking the notification in order to extend the Brexit transition period.

Would the EU have to approve such a move?
The UK could revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU without any permission being needed from the other member states."

I believe that it would best for Parliament to vote to Revoke Article 50 as explained in the Telegraph. However if they fail to do this, the question must be put to the people in a referendum on whether to accept May's deal or Remain in the EU.
