A thread for sharing details of our stashes: what we have, what we need, good hiding places and all sorts of hints and tips to help prepare for shortages in the event of a no deal brexit.

I understand it does. You lose a bit as you do with any preserving or cooking. The flavour intensifies and it's quite delicious.

TheElementsSong · 13/07/2019 12:01

That is one pod with one seed.

^^ Grin

@TheElementsSong I would demolish that in moments. Love pea pod time. Used to sit with my Dad demolishing them.
When I discovered that you can use pea shoots in salad, I was in heaven.

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/07/2019 15:14

Showoff!

Their dad was responsible for them. Technically he has grown one pea more than I have as I have harvested nothing yet. He did not realise that you still have to water them when they are outside.

mum2jakie · 13/07/2019 16:50

I planted some sprouting potatoes from the back of the cupboard a few weeks ago and spotted some plants growing! Will be interesting to see the results. Fairly sure we won't be self sufficient in potatoes any time soon!

bellinisurge · 13/07/2019 16:52

But what you get will be yummy @mum2jakie . Forget self sufficiency. Bask in your fabulousness at doing it at all and what you can learn for doing it again.Smile

mum2jakie · 13/07/2019 17:07

Lol @bellinisurge Thanks. Probably need to learn not to leave potatoes in the cupboard for too long! Littlest is looking forward to hopefully eating some homegrown potatoes anyway.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/07/2019 17:39

We picked a bucket of peas today at the allotment, then a massive tub in the garden.

I had a surprise haul of green beans too (I was weeding and spotted I had some; probably 2 supermarket packs worth!).

And...I have runner beans on the way, finally. There's hope, people!

We've had homegrown peas, broccoli and green beans with dinner tonight.

I need to find some seed potatoes to grow Christmas spuds. Must mooch round Wilko next week.

I sowed more runner and broad beans and peas today. It may be too late, but it's worth a shot. 😂 They should germinate quickly in this weather.

Oh, and my allotment tomatoes have gone feral! They all had Growmore in the hole they were put it. They may have benefitted!

bellinisurge · 13/07/2019 17:41

You're just taunting me with the peas Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 13/07/2019 17:46

Oh, I'm sitting podding the last of the broad beans too! 😁

NoWordForFluffy · 13/07/2019 17:49

@bellinisurge, did you sow into the ground? I struggled with those peas. My successful ones were sown into seed trays and transplanted.

CrunchyCarrot · 13/07/2019 18:01

Oooooh yummy veg pics! drool

Just picked a ton more raspberries, there really is a bumper crop this year. Also just spotted 3 green chillies on my chilli plant! Yay!

With peas, I always sow in pots not direct as in the past I've found ants have carried them off! I sowed another lot several days ago and they've germinated now so hopefully a second crop later on. I should take some pics of my (very small) veg crop! Grin

CrunchyCarrot · 13/07/2019 18:16

Right here we go... my best tomato plant (no toms yet but flowering), The Three Chillies, and my sweet potato plant (still young).

@CrunchyCarrot - sweet potato envy here. I tried and failed last year.
@NoWordForFluffy , I grew some peas on the window ledge earlier this year (in vermiculite) inspired by the wonderful Huw Richards. I just wanted shoots but, to be honest, I just kept picking and munching the shoots like Ermintrude from The Magic Roundabout (one for the old gimmers on hereGrin).

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/07/2019 18:58

When I can find it.. I will take a picture of dd's pea.

May plant some peas then today. And the last two courgette seeds.

Tomatoes I will leave til we get back from holiday and grow on the window sill. They did well.there last time.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/07/2019 21:07

After finding stealth green beans earlier, I just found some stealth runner beans! I hadn't seen the little beans so had no bloody idea I had them! 😂

Only enough for dinner tomorrow (with other veg, I'm not tight!), but it's a start!

NoWordForFluffy · 13/07/2019 21:10

Oh, I'm a gimmer too if remembering The Magic Roundabout is a qualifying feature! 😂

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/07/2019 21:23

Glad to see this thread revived although also obv sad there's still a need for it.
I'm just in a contact state of disbelief.

Anyway I've been trying things from jack monroe's new book.
My garden has been abandoned for a week for a holiday so I'm going to check on it tonight.
But so far the gooseberries from that special offer didn't work out but everything else is good. Strawberries, one raspberry so far, the blueberries aren't really producing flowers but they might next year.

We are hoping for pea shoots, lettuce, beetroot, rondo carrots.
My dad gave me some cabbage babies and they were growing v well before we left.
I've planted leek seedlings.

The beetroot, carrots, leeks worked fine last year.

Blackcurrants are nearly ready (if any of you are down south I know that might sound a bit late )

I have a nice prolific Victoria plum tree.

I'm trying to learn more about wild food. We've made elderflower cordial and fritters.

I found a rhubarb plant someone had fly tipped. Which is odd.
So I'm trying to encourage that to stay alive.
Rhubarb and cherry cordial is very nice.

If there are mason jars/bottles in the sale anywhere in October I might get a few more.

HeronLanyon · 14/07/2019 11:56

It is with deep regret that I have to announce that not only have I been raiding my wonderful March/April stockpile in disorganised fashion but that I am now abandoning it.

I need the space due to clearing a relative’s house. It’s been a tough call but family photos and letters and treasured ‘stuff’ will now take the place of 10,000 tins of toms etc etc. mostly being donated to food bank later today.
October may be interesting! Have had such good advice on here. Thank you all !
Have a list ready in case go through it all again (no idea where things will go though !)

bellinisurge · 14/07/2019 16:54

@HeronLanyon , you do what works for you and your family. (And your storage space and budget). Always the best plan.
There is no Perfect Way.

HeronLanyon · 14/07/2019 17:15

Indeed ! Thought I should fess up !! Had a spectacular stockpile I think. Thanks for your great ideas Bellini.

bellinisurge · 14/07/2019 17:51

You're welcome Smile

Bellasblankexpression · 14/07/2019 17:54

I have been rotating my stash so I need to stock up again, this thread has reminded me. I still have tins and pulses coming out of my ears but we may have raided the crackers and dark chocolate recently Blush
Managed to get some great bargains at Costco recently on toothpaste, loo roll and washing powder, soap, bottled water and long life milk, so all the basics are in there.
We’ve raided our battery stash as well Confused
Please tell me I’m not alone in the occasional stash raid!

bellinisurge · 14/07/2019 19:27

Totally not alone. Grin

Socksontheradiator · 14/07/2019 19:43

We raided ours partly out of laziness when we couldn't be bothered to go shopping, partly to practise our tin can cookery, and partly because sell by dates are not all long, and we started stashing before the original brexit date.
Currently restocking, and I think we have enough for several weeks of emergency rations if it became necessary.
We haven't prioritised anything except stuff that we like/will keep well, on the basis that shops could be mayhem for a while and we'd like to be able to stay away from them if it comes to that.
