A thread for sharing details of our stashes: what we have, what we need, good hiding places and all sorts of hints and tips to help prepare for shortages in the event of a no deal brexit.

DP has got ants in his workshop, and they've marched into the house carrying small pieces of sawdust and splinters, so they're probably planning to build a major and civilization next to the stockpile.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 08:57

Ok from my stockpile, I have tested the following things this week: Idahoan dauphinoise : bloody gorgeous. We had it with salmon from the freezer and some greens from the garden. Also yum.
Turkey chilli that I'd made a year ago and canned - canning is a general prepper thing and not a Brexit essential/you could have lobbed it in the freezer but I wanted to save space. This was delicious but a bit bland. I made it bland so my household could add hot sauce as they like. Also yummy.
My dd tried reusable sanpro for her first period- I obviously gave her some disposables and left the choice to her. She preferred the reusables- which washed up beautifully btw.
Almond milk from Aldi - I added a box witheach shop for a while. Ok for a milk freak like me but greatly enhanced by me raiding the sweet stash at the same time Grin.
And some household essentials.

I trot this out because I want to find what stuff in the stash actually goes down well and can be rebought now that I have my dh and dd on board with the idea. In a low key, non- preachy, non-lifestyle altering way.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/04/2019 09:03

That's hilarious AutumnCrow. Did they have teeny little tools with them too?

I did a store cupboard cook as well yesterday. Made a salad out of buckwheat, tinned salmon, lemon, herbs from the garden and some tomatoes that were not from the store cupboard. It was really tasty.

Need to put the items on this weeks shopping list though. I wonder if there's an app that I could export my spreadsheet too that would automatically create the new shopping list.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 09:04

@AutumnCrow , I've tried various eco friendly options for killing/deterring ants but found chemical warfare the most successful option. Also weirdly fascinated by the ant country civilisation in your dp's shed, though Grin

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 09:13

No tools yet, kitten, and DP is threatening Antmageddon now before 'it all goes too far'. He's a destroyer of worlds.

I've tried a few tins I bought for retro reasons. Tinned mince, I loved as a student. I used to make some sort of spag bol out of it. Tried to recreate it, but it wasn't the same. Might need to rethink that one!

BercowsSilkTie · 25/04/2019 09:15

That's inspired me to try the beanfeast tonight for dinner.
Loving the ant civilisation. I've always been fascinated by ants. Such social and civilised insects.

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 09:21

bellini yes, I do believe a bottle of powder has been purchased from B&Q for the purposes of ant clearance.

Poor little blighters. All they wanted to do was set up some minor stockpile rights, but DP thinks they'll declare UDI, fight for sovereignty of the gingernuts, and tunnel into the floor dragging the gnocchi down with them.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 09:28

The little blighters can set up home somewhere else or .... [adopts cinematic voiceover voice thing] face the consequences.

NoWordForFluffy · 25/04/2019 09:38

😂 re 🐜 warfare!

I'm with Bob Flowerdew (great name for a gardener!) by the way. I pour my recycled wine from the bucket it's been collected in onto my allotment compost heap. My mum told me to do it! Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/04/2019 11:11

I'm sure I read a sci fi story about ants colonising a house....

Maybe I'll turn my compost heap into an outdoor lav.

1tisILeClerc · 25/04/2019 11:34

{ Tinned mince, I loved as a student. I used to make some sort of spag bol out of it. Tried to recreate it, but it wasn't the same. Might need to rethink that one}

Maybe the reason for this is that although your 'spag bol' may be the same, YOU have changed, perhaps a little more discerning now?

Recycling wine/beer as recently posted also has an advantage that it deters foxes. Something to bear in mind when perched on the compost heap in the middle of the night.
Do I detect a scouring of charity and bric a brac shops for Victorian 'po's' or 'gazunder's coming on?

NoWordForFluffy · 25/04/2019 12:47

I've got one of those compost dalek thingies. There's no way I'm going to perch on that. And I'd be seen from a relatively main road! 😂😂

I'll stick to a bucket in the shed.

Good news re fixes though. Hopefully it also works on rats etc.

NoWordForFluffy · 25/04/2019 12:47

Foxes. 🦊 Bloody autocorrect.

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 13:13

LeClerc I'm not especially refined, but thank you for suggesting it Grin I think I was 18 and just incredibly hungry all the time, and it was my Saturday treat to make me actually feel full.

Also I suspect to fully recreate student tinned mince spag bol, l need to use the same tinned tomatoes and that long spaghetti that I got from the local co-op.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 13:23

@AutumnCrow , might be judging you by my own standards but did alcohol play a part in your enjoyment of it?

1tisILeClerc · 25/04/2019 13:51

I repair things for a living and constantly come up with the issue that something repaired is now 'different' to what it was.
2 reasons, it is not now 'broken' and that your memory of it is from 40 year's ago, so you are not the same.
(Brief pause thinking how nice it would be to have my body of 40 years ago).

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 15:10

I think it was hangover food, yes, and very comforting, being far away from home as well.

We invest a lot in food - taste, smells, security, memories - don't we? And then there's status, family bonds, control ...

My Brexit stash was/is about trying to keep some control in a world I don't fully like or trust any more, I think.

Anyway, I'm in for a tin of chicken in white sauce next.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 15:18

@AutumnCrow . I agree. My fave recipe for shepherds pie is one I learned at school in the late 70s. It has crisps and baked beans in it. I can't eat any other version- it reminds me of striking out on my own to feed myself for the first time. And ballsing stuff up and learning from that.

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 16:11

I hope when Brexit is behind us as a horrible dream-like thing, that we can go Retro Retro on these dishes.

And one of our DC writes a fully funded PhD about it.

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 16:38

Isn't there a Proust thing about the evocative nature of taste typical Remainer trying to be clever Grin

AutumnCrow · 25/04/2019 17:16

Yes, Madeleine cakes!

mum2jakie · 25/04/2019 20:47

@bellinisurge can't find the Idahoan Dauphinoise or Gratins for sale in any supermarket any more? I've got a stash of the gratin bakes but the best before date is quite short.

My OH has got a bit of a craze on their instant mash - originally bought purely because of Brexit - and swears they taste better than homemade mash!

bellinisurge · 25/04/2019 21:05

@mum2jakie , I got mine off Amazon. They do have a short date but it's a "Best Before " so I am a bit more relaxed about it.

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/05/2019 21:48

Brexit pizza for tea...

I have just opened the last bag of frozen sweetcorn and bag of peas. So about a month and a half.

Pixie2015 · 12/05/2019 21:54

Took lots of UHT milk back to supermarket today and put in food bank trolley - nice to have a bit space back !
