My mum hadn't thought of stocking up, but I've suggested she does, so she's now going to get some extra bits in her delivery next week.

SparklySneakers · 19/03/2019 16:23

She's been getting some extra things but not enough really so have been adding an item or 3 each time I go shopping.

Our 3 brexit boxes are full. The bookcase under the stairs is full, the understairs cupboard is full, my bed drawer is full. We should be ok for quite some time. My probably ok for 4 weeks at a push. I feel less anxious knowing we have our stashes.

Of course an extension will mean using up some things instead of keeping them stashed but is mainly biscuits and uht milk so no difficulty there.

I've stocked up extras for student DS and graduate-in-penury DD, just in case. They are to play Lindisfarne's 'Run for Home' in their earphones and head back for lasagne and Galaxy ripples.

Potentialmadcatlady · 19/03/2019 19:39

I have been stocking up on cheese for my veggie daughter who lives on the stuff... got a strange look in garage when I lifted five bags of reduced grated cheddar- it went straight into freezer so I didn’t have to grate it 😁

mum2jakie · 19/03/2019 19:57

With the uncertainty about possible extension etc, I'm focusing on purchasing non-food items this week.

More loo rolls, cleaning products, toiletries etc. Doesn't matter how long any extension is then.

Also tried and tested Marks & Spencer tinned veggie curry. Very pleasant, nice range of veg but not very spicy so might need pepping up for some people. Recommended buy!

PrawnOfCreation · 19/03/2019 20:00

5ltr of thin bleach is 90p in Tesco. I use it regularly so bought a load. I can safely store it, it doesn't go off, and I'll get through it eventually.

This forward purchasing is great. We haven't ran out if milk or butter in weeks, we just defrost and replace when next doing the big shop.

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/03/2019 20:24

I need to restock. Keeping on top of what I use each week is the hardest part at the moment.

Tins and pasta will keep if there is a delay. The not knowing is tricky do we go for a mass vegetables shop and a sack of spuds or not.

Where has got offers on sacks of spuds?

A week and a half to go.

PrawnOfCreation · 19/03/2019 20:43

Our local Morrisons does good sacks of spuds @BlackeyedGruesome,sometimes you have to ask if they're not on shop floor. Also recommend their Saver brand jaffa cakes. Bloody delicious. The orange jelly tastes like orange.

I've decided for veg just to go with tinned, I can't store fresh and I'd time it wrong. For fruit I've given over a bigger % of the budget and gone for frozen. Veg will be peas, sweetcorn, plum toms, carrots etc. But fruit will be mango, pineapple, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. My kids love them and I can make puddings and add them to porridge etc to make it nicer. Makes me so sad to think they won't get a wide choice, yes we're spoiled, eating out of season. But it's nice having fruits out of season.

Cloudtree · 19/03/2019 22:13

I’ve just had another delivery from Tesco. Driver told me it’s gone crazy. He said loads of people have been doing enormous shops and ordering large quantities of the same item this week.

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/03/2019 22:48

Thanks prawn.

Crikey cloud. Hopefully it won't trigger panic buying this close to the deadline.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/03/2019 22:53

I've just changed my Thursday delivery to tomorrow as it's not got time to go mad before it comes tomorrow morning.

I'm then going to whizz round doing other bits and bobs like stocking up on dairy free spread. Too much to do. Good job I'm off work incapacitated!

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/03/2019 23:37

i remember having a sore wrist for some reason and steering the trolley with my hip and one hand.

good luck with the shopping one handed.

LonelyTiredandLow · 20/03/2019 04:06

Another shop booked in for us with ASDA - noticed a lot of their frozen veg is out of stock. I've bought some normal/fresh green beans with a view to freezing them...any idea how long they should last like that?

I got my new table top freezer this week from Aldi. I've just ordered frying steaks to stack in it (thin) along with some chicken thighs and am going to tetris my old freezer tomorrow.

LeesPostersAreInFrames · 20/03/2019 04:28

LonelyTiredandLow fresh frozen green beans last indefinitely imo.

I'm doing a big shop tomorrow. Think I'm going to be simply storing everything extra long life in my car boot now as out of hiding space in the house. Gearing up to tell leave voting "it'll be fine" family to humour me and please order their meds and get a big shop in now.

Awake in the middle of the night right now worried as hell about what is to come Sad

Moorfields · 20/03/2019 05:54

Well now the PM has asked for a delay to Brexit, should I pause the forward purchasing? Or carry on regardless?

Morrison's has a big bag of 480 Tetley tea bags for £5.

bellinisurge · 20/03/2019 06:15

I hate to give you a useless answer but it is up to you and your budget. I saw those big bags but as I can only drink decaf or none at all (I have ms) I passed on them.

Cloudtree · 20/03/2019 07:52

I've decided just to keep going until we know for sure what is happening (but I am very lucky because we have the space).

I work for myself but speak to lots of clients every day and lots of opportunity for chit chat when waiting around in court. Its ideal talking to them since they're not real work colleagues/friends so have no idea where I live (and vice versa, which probably makes them more inclined to speak frankly). Loads are stockpiling now.

Interestingly I found my online receipt from a tesco order in October and compared it to yesterdays since I'd bought lots of the same or very similar things. Their prices hadn't actually gone up.

BadlyAgedMemes · 20/03/2019 08:45

I'm assuming we'll be crashing out in nine days until something is actually decided and agreed to the contrary, so I'll get some potatoes, carrots, onions, apples and butternut squash this week. Not in huge quantities as there's just the two of us and I hate wasting food, and my freezer is full, but more than my usual small bags.

The past few weeks, I've not seen any panic buying around here. It's hard to say of course who's just doing a big shop that they'd do otherwise, and who might be buying extra. There was a very harrowed looking lady buying lots of toilet paper and bleach in Aldi when I popped in last, so I assumed she's either worried about Brexit or has a large family at home, all with stomach bugs...

LeesPostersAreInFrames · 20/03/2019 20:50

I've just watched TMs speech. I don't feel reassured by it.

Did a big top up to stockpiles in sainsburys this morning. No empty shelves, nobody really looking like they were prepping.

MintyCedric · 20/03/2019 21:00

I'm slightly worried about my online shop on Friday...Tesco are already out of my pre-mixed gin!

AutumnCrow · 20/03/2019 21:34

That PM's speechette of petulance was possibly one of the least reassuring things I've ever witnessed. I think I'll keep forward purchasing, cheers Theresa, you deranged z-list despot.

I have cheese. Lots of cheese. In honour of Operation Yellowhammer and the bird call, 'little-bit-of-bread-and-no-cheeeeese '.

Cloudtree · 21/03/2019 08:24

That speech basically doomed us to crash out IMO

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/03/2019 10:36

Crap, crap, crap, crap.

Just done a top up shop, bit of a panic shop as I am picking up DD for an appointment from school about now. Picked up more tins of beans as I used some this week.

It is all so aggghhh.

mum2jakie · 21/03/2019 21:38

Looks like it'll be 12th April at the earliest? Gives us a couple more weeks for last bits at any rate!
