What do Leavers expect us to do? So angry.

I am a British national living in the EU. I didn't get a vote. I don't know what my position will be after Brexit. Today I saw a video of the Brexit secretary admitting that he didn't know whether we would be allowed to live in the UK with the same rights as other UK citizens. What?? Not only did we not get to vote, our lives have been turned upside down, but if I decide to uproot my family and come to the UK, I'll potentially treated as a second class citizen! Moving abroad was perfectly legal, even encouraged as an ESL teacher - why does the government think we should be punished?

That's longer true. There are minimum income requirements of the British spouse + a three month waiting period before a returning Briton can even use the NHS.

TheElementsSong · 17/01/2019 14:37

The only condition that the impose is that you don't ask for benefits and they give you a permit to work strait away.

Not true.

BlueJag · 17/01/2019 19:56

@TheElementsSong I've been thru the process. Have you?

TheElementsSong · 17/01/2019 20:14

I've been thru the process. Have you?

Why, does it matter? Remember, you said the only condition is not claiming benefits.

BlueJag · 17/01/2019 20:58

People need to find the right information for their individual cases.
I can only describe what we went thru and the conditions the government imposed on us.
It was laborious but not a difficult process.
I feel there is so much misinformation about what's going to happen.
I don't know know why there is so much panic.

TheElementsSong · 17/01/2019 21:08

So is the only condition for a spouse that no benefits are claimed?

Mistigri · 18/01/2019 07:48

Conditions for Britons wanting to bring a non-EU spouse to the U.K. have been tightened in recent years, Bluejag doesn't say when she did it or where her spouse came from, and this omission is important and possibly deliberate.

I recently chatted to a man from Northern Ireland who had unable to bring his Chinese spouse and child to NI because of the income limits - despite him also having Irish citizenship which means the refusal of a spousal visa is possibly unlawful.

Mistigri · 18/01/2019 07:49

So is the only condition for a spouse that no benefits are claimed?

I am pretty sure this is false.

TheElementsSong · 18/01/2019 08:57

I am pretty sure this is false.

I am absolutely sure this is false.

But it wasn't me who claimed this, doubled down on their expertise (oh the irony, when Leavers have had enough of experts), then when questioned on this specific point, went for a general undirected waffle which I think was a non-concessionary concession. Possibly.

when she did it

This is a crucial factor, and I agree that it is interesting to claim expertise in this matter while omitting this information.

Minimum income requirements for spouse.

I feel for you op. You are as far as Theresa May is concerned a much despised 'citizen of nowhere'. Have you heard her call people that?

Tanith · 18/01/2019 17:50

“ I've been thru the process. Have you?”

How convenient... Hmm

TheElementsSong · 18/01/2019 17:57

How convenient...

Well, convenient for conveying an aura of authority to the uninformed Grin
