What does it actually mean?

He’s tabled a motion but the gov say they don’t have time to discuss it. So it just just be ignores?

Does she just carry on with discussions for her deal/no deal?

It can just be ignored unless he goes for a proper motion of no confidence in the government itself.

GD12 · 18/12/2018 08:08

The next step would've had to have been a vote of no confidence in the Government which if passed would've triggered a general election. There wasn't enough votes to pass a VoNC in the government so they're waiting for a "better time" to hold one, probably after her deal is voted down. Problem is, theres no time left to hold a GE after her deal is voted down. Do yes we continue down the path to a no deal.

SillySallySingsSongs · 18/12/2018 08:11

What does it actually mean?

Nothing. Its political point scoring. It's a stunt because he knows a no confidence vote in the gvt would fail as DUP have already said they would vote with the gvt so the numbers don't add up.

Peregrina · 18/12/2018 08:31

I suppose it sends a message to Theresa May, that no one likes her, but she appears to be thick skinned, so it bounces off. Also those Tories who voted against her last week have now decided that they do like her after all.

SillySallySingsSongs · 18/12/2018 08:56

Yet her personal popularity polling rating is higher than Corbyns so if that is what he is after it was a bit of an own goal.

fessmess · 18/12/2018 09:02

IMO May is stalling vote to increase panic about no-deal Brexit so MPs vote her deal through. I am sick of this cynical game playing.

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2018 09:05

I'm not sure how it sends a message to May that no one likes her, unless you think Corbyn is the voice of everyone. And quite frankly he's liked less and it doesn't bother him, plus it's not bloody school.

It's just a game he's playing,he knows full well she will ignore it, what does he expect her to do, start crying and have another bloody vote to see how popular she is? She's just had one ffs.

I work for one of rhe companies being requested by the government to prepare for no deal and I can assure you the government is doing the opposite they are not telling rh public the extent of it to avoid panic because of the massive negative impact it would have.

AthenaisdeRochechouart · 18/12/2018 09:10

Bluntness - has your company been forced to sign a NDA?

bellinisurge · 18/12/2018 09:39

He knows he has no chance to get a no confidence in the government motion passed.
This is typical Corbyn tokenism.

Holidayshopping · 18/12/2018 10:17

Why do it then? What next?

Could you clarify this? Do you mean the government is doing loads or nothing in regard to preparing for no deal?

Grace212 · 18/12/2018 10:25

glad the OP asked

I don't understanding this "tabling a motion" thing. Isn't that what he did? So confused.

MadeleineMaxwell · 18/12/2018 10:25

I like to apply Occam's Razor in these situations.

Is it more likely that Corbyn is playing some intricate Machiavellian political game or that he's a fucking idiot?

I know which answer I think fits best.

Bombardier25966 · 18/12/2018 10:25

The opposition are doing what they should be doing, opposing the government's abysmal efforts at sorting Brexit. However the reality of being in opposition is that they will lose, they are the minority so do not have the votes to get anything through.

Now what is May doing? What about her MPs that last week thought she was so poor that she wasn't fit to lead their party? These creatures are making us look like a laughing stock, and far beyond the EU.

noblegiraffe · 18/12/2018 10:28

He did it to make it look like he is doing something rather than simply being a completely useless waste of space.

FFS given the state of the Tories, how appalling is it that Labour won’t no-confidence them because they would probably lose!

howabout · 18/12/2018 10:41

Tabling the Motion forced the ERG / Grieve and co and the DUP to admit they would vote for TM. This means the current impasse is their fault not Labour's.

It also relieves the pressure for a vote of No Confidence from LibDem / SNP etc as it makes clear they would not win and would risk strengthening the Government's hand.

AthenaisdeRochechouart · 18/12/2018 11:10

True, howabout, but the Tory press won't spin it that way - they're making it look like JC is being a muppet.

NoLogicInThis · 18/12/2018 11:57

Bluntness Do you mean the govt is doing nothing or stockpiling?

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2018 12:03

The government is requesting stock piling.

NoLogicInThis · 18/12/2018 12:07

Are you allowed to say what line of business medicine or food ?

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2018 12:18

With all due respect, do you not watch the news? They are asking approx 6000 companies to prepare for no deal. And no I won't say which industry I'm in as it's not relevant.

Torsz · 18/12/2018 12:23

It means absolutely nothing, just like everything else he says...

bellinisurge · 18/12/2018 12:25

Thank you @Bluntness100 .

NoLogicInThis · 18/12/2018 12:27

Blunt i do watch the news but your original post didn't make it clear what the Govt was actually doing as both I and another poster asked you to clarify what you meant.
I was just discussing no harm intended
