Brexit

Annoyed that a (now ex) co-worker keeps asking me about Brexit

First time she asked me, it was said in a sort of 'Are you worried about Brexit'. I replied, no, I'm Irish, we are covered by the Ireland Agreement or whatever it is. A discussion ensued, so she was aware I wasn't concerned.
Now, 4 months later, I left my job as I didn't like it, and she asked me again? Will you go home now because of Brexit?

AIBU to feel miffed that she is asking me this - TWICE. It's almost as if she wants me to leave? Lol. I'm aware the Irish aren't wanted here, but bloody hell, don't be so damned obvious about it.

For reference, I've had discussions with one other colleague (Polish with British citizenship) and he feels it's the Polish that people wanted to get rid of. With other colleagues e.g. one Hungarian lady, I've never brought it up as it seems impolite to bring it up for some reason? The discussion with the Polish colleague was at his instigation.

If you're not British, do you find people asking you this a lot? Or just if you're from a particularly unwanted nation lol..

It's nothing to do with you being Irish though. I feel really welcome any time I have been in London.

She is probably anxious over Brexit and is asking everyone.

Just turn it back on her the next time, ' are you anxious over Brexit? '

And let her get it off her chest. People are usually talking about themselves.

SheBangsit · 29/10/2018 11:51

She's English, so not worried about Brexit.

Twice in 4 months hardly seems excessive

SheBangsit · 29/10/2018 11:55

But she knew I wasn't concerned as the discussion was extensive the first time, so why blooming ask me again?

What do you mean she is English so is not worried, isn't that who it's mainly effecting? English people in England.

Maybe I have misunderstood completely your post though have I? Sorry if I have.

Quietrebel · 29/10/2018 11:58

She's English, so not worried about Brexit.

I think you'll find quite a few English people are worried about what it will do the economy and their jobs!

BollocksToBrexit · 29/10/2018 12:00

She's English, so not worried about Brexit.

Why does being English make you think she's not worried about it? Millions of English people are worried sick about it and have no get out options.

SheBangsit · 29/10/2018 12:00

No, she's specifically asking me, because I'm not English. I.e. both times, it was framed 'Will you go home because of Brexit?'. She's not concerned about having to go home as she is at home.

Well in the first conversation, my initial response to her was 'Why would I be worried, we're not the ones who decided to leave the EU'. Which might not have gone down well at all lol.

You could ask her exactly what she is driving at. Does she want all foreigners to leave? Is she expecting Davis, Fox, Johnson etc. to deliver a wonderful brexit.

3luckystars · 29/10/2018 13:24

If be wondering what she is talking about too.

Dacresmallwilly · 29/10/2018 13:25

I'm English, I'm worried about Brexit, I know quite a fewEuropeans who have left since the vote. Maybe she's asking out of concern rather than to make you feel unwelcome.

Janleverton · 29/10/2018 13:32

I’m English and I’m very worried about brexit - along with however many millions of other people voted to remain. (Not forgetting the Scots and welsh remainers, too).

I work with an Irish guy who has a Spanish wife and I feel a pang of envy at the freedom they have should it all go to shit. While acknowledging that they’ve made lives here, with dcs and homes and careers.

akerman · 30/10/2018 14:37

I'm English and am awake at night worrying about Brexit. I feel completely trapped (and hoping that we're not going to be TOO dominated by the more aggressive type of leaver) and deeply saddened to see much loved EU family and friends thinking about leaving. On top of that I'm scared about the zeal the Brexiter MPs are showing over getting rid of our workers' rights and the threat to the NHS.
From what you've written she could just be asking a genuine questions, because frankly if I had the option of leaving the UK right now, I would do. I speak as one who lived abroad for 17 years, was desperately homesick, and fought really hard to get back home again. But the UK isn't home to me any longer.

Namelessinseattle · 30/10/2018 14:43

I think a lot has happened In The last 4 months- that is to say so little, but people seem to be getting more worried about prepping, and flights and insulin and all sorts. So she’s probably asking are you getting out of dodge seen as you have somewhere to go.

As pp have said you can’t know unless you ask her

Agustarella · 30/10/2018 14:49

If I were you I'd be leaving the UK before Brexit. Not because you're necessarily unwelcome (I hope you're not) but because leaving a country that's on the verge of economic collapse is a good idea. The only reason why being Irish is significant is that you will still have your EU citizenship after Brexit, whereas most British people won't.

Firstbornunicorn · 30/10/2018 14:52

@3luckystars I wouldn't say it's mainly effecting English people in England, no. In fact, I'm in Northern Ireland, and it seems we may be affected more than any other province at the moment.

footballagain3 · 30/10/2018 15:35

I'm English and very worried about Brexit! It's hard know what she meant by asking you twice. Unfortunately I would say I found those who voted leave based on their views on immigration directed this at those from Eastern European countries.

Firstbornunicorn · 30/10/2018 15:51

Affecting* whoops!

Theworldisfullofgs · 30/10/2018 16:02

I'm English and worried about brexit and mortified about the impact on EU citizens living here.

www.rte.ie/news/business/2018/1030/1007481-jobseekers-turning-their-back-on-british-jobs/

Apparently there are fewer Irish people applying for jobs in the UK now.

In other news, Ireland is turning down a record number of passport applications. I wish I were Irish. Sad

Heatherjayne1972 · 31/10/2018 17:44

I’m english. I have no Eu relatives so I’m stuck here whether I like it or not
And yes I’m worried about what’s going to happen
Really worried

And incredibly angry

GettinTrimmer · 03/11/2018 09:35

I feel concerned now that my Romanian colleague I was asking about whether she will apply for citizenship - I hope she didnt think I was being intrusive. I was just concerned, also read an article about many workers over here who don't follow the news/politics and assume as they are tax payers their citizenship will just be sorted out without them having to do anything. I feel concerned about everyone.

DarlingNikita · 03/11/2018 14:25

Ireland Agreement or whatever it is Hmm
