I thought I'd share this with you

I've been on a facebook group this evening. A national newspaper has stated that my local city (voted Brexit) are now starting to change their minds. Cue all the posters saying they haven't changed their minds, that the EU is corrupt and undemocratic , the sooner we're out the better, all the scaremongering hasn't happened (which to them obviously means this is all a good idea) etc. etc.

I asked what they saw would be the benefits? Loads of comments followed about remoaners needing to shut up, we voted... There was talk about sovereignty (although they didn't mention that word because I had asked them not to), how our MPs are voted for by us and should have the right to put our money where it's needed not building roads and universities.

Then this:
here is a short story for you, we’ll call it... ‘After the horse has bolted’ Once upon a time there was horse stuck in a paddock, going round and round in circles unable to run around in the big field outside. All his owners had a big debate about whether to keep him in the paddock, or let him out in the field, the pros and cons were discussed, many said he couldn’t survive by himself out in the field. So they had a vote and eventually they decided by a small margin to open the gate and let him out. As they were opening the gates some of the folk who didn’t want to let him go, tried to get in the way, which was really annoying as everyone agreed that they would vote on whether to let him go and abide by that decision. One girl called * just sat in the corner saying remind me again, why should we let him go. No one answered her, and she said that was because there were no good reasons.....

There's just no answer to that!

🤔

FusionChefGeoff · 08/10/2018 22:41

Oh phew that's cleared that up then

Lovetosinglalala123 · 08/10/2018 22:44

And still the soundbites keep coming. Even bringing up things that I haven't even mentioned (another referendum).

If it wasn't all so depressingly serious I'd be laughing at them.

Confused
Bearbehind · 08/10/2018 22:55

Have you been at the gin OP?

That’s the oddest analogy I’ve heard yet - it makes no sense - is there a punchline?

Lovetosinglalala123 · 08/10/2018 23:07

Unfortunately not Bearbehind. That's it - copied and pasted, just left my name out.

I'm saving all my alcohol for 6 months time. I can then either drown my sorrows or celebrate the dawning of the age of Aquarius and the unicorns.

Bearbehind · 08/10/2018 23:11

I don’t understand what side that story is from though - it’s embarrassing whether it’s Leave or Remain.

As I said, it makes no sense and I’m not sure why you’d start a thread about it.

If you want shockingly naive Leave comments check out the Daily Mail Brexit article comments 😆

Lovetosinglalala123 · 08/10/2018 23:18

Bearbehind I agree it makes no sense. I haven't bothered replying to it. I think the author thought he was being clever and showing his superior knowledge (it was a man). He'd already made his point that he was a brexiter and came back with the analogy after I'd asked why he thought things were going to be so good.

Sorry if I've broken any Brexit board rules.

There's just no answer to that! well I think the same could be said of your post tbh, i’m a bit Confused

  1. maybe the National newspaper got it wrong, what’s the feeling on this in your local paper?

  2. what was posted (by you?) in the run up to that analogy (apart from you asking them not to mention sovereignty Confused)

  3. are you the girl in the corner of the field feeling unanswered?

  4. he was being clever and showing his superior knowledge (it was a man) the man bit isn’t relevant and in no way does that show his superior knowledge.

I thought Leavers were supposed to be the crazy posters Wink

This is so silly it’s amusing me Smile

bellinisurge · 09/10/2018 06:16

I saw similar drivel on a local board. It's a case of some people wedded to guessing while others wedded to reasonable speculation. How on earth, using this slightly odd analogy, would it be better help for a distressed horse/unicorn to let it go off and get more distressed in unfamiliar territory. Wouldn't it be better to work on what's making it distressed.
My advice is to stay off local Facebook boards. The one I read just filled me with negative thoughts about my neighbours.

bellinisurge · 09/10/2018 06:24

Some twat let a horse out to run wild and free near us. Caused mayhem on the motorway. God knows what happened to the poor horse. After a snarl up , we all got on with our lives.

VickieCherry · 09/10/2018 06:31

The answer is never to read your local Facebook groups. I unfortunately live in a safe Tory seat which voted Leave, and based on Facebook group comments it is populated entirely by morons. I know it's not because I'm friends with plenty of lovely, sensible people. But if I read the comments I end up hating everyone within a 20 mile radius.

1tisILeClerc · 09/10/2018 08:07

If the 'story' had said there was a lion in the bigger field, but the horse can run a bit faster, then it might make a touch more sense but as it stands, weird.

bellinisurge · 09/10/2018 09:14

I read my local FB posts now and then. I would say it makes me want to vomit but that sounds snowflake-y. What it actually makes me do is see the names of people who I know will suffer and whinge about suffering in FB. In the spirit of this new age of enjoying the suffering of others, I get a warm fuzzy feeling at their imminent distress.

1tisILeClerc · 09/10/2018 09:24

Send a list of 'leavers' to the council offices so that they can pay extra council tax to compensate remainers.
If the vote had been remain, there would have been a slight increase due to inflation generally but otherwise the world would be 'normal'.
Leavers need to be held to their actions.

bellinisurge · 09/10/2018 09:26

@1tisILeClerc - I least I know who to avoid.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 09/10/2018 13:25

Not sure why everyone’s having a go at the OP. She’s clearly been sucked into a BTL argument with some hard of thinking Leavers on a local newspaper website, and has needed to share the most batshit comment with MN to avoid turning to the gin this early in the week. Confused

1tisILeClerc · 09/10/2018 13:49

{Sorry if I've broken any Brexit board rules.}
The Brexit section is happy to discuss. If a leaver could come up with some really goof reasons to leave, or even flimsy reasons but backed up with some evidence this area is OK with that.

time4chocolate · 09/10/2018 14:10

I’m all reasoned out 1tis (goof, flimsy or otherwiseSmile)

1tisILeClerc · 09/10/2018 14:19

I really must clean my keyboard or put glasses on, Good (obviously)!

bellinisurge · 09/10/2018 14:19

Seen a lot of goof, @1tisILeClerc .
Sorry for teasing on a typo Grin

1tisILeClerc · 09/10/2018 14:25

If that's the worst insult you can manage, you are welcome to pop round for a coffee anytime!

Lovetosinglalala123 · 09/10/2018 20:54

See, I thought I'd share it here with some sane people instead of asking him a shedload of questions like, did anyone check the perimeter of the field for gaps in the fence, did anyone check that the grass was healthy for a horse and would it have access to water, who would take responsibility if the horse escaped and caused mayhem on the motorway. I'd still have been a remoaner who couldn't see the greener grass.

I've turned off notifications on that particular facebook thread because it was getting my blood pressure up. I've never joined in a discussion like that before (got some pretty stressful stuff going on and it was a distraction) and won't be making the mistake again.

I'll be sticking to MN where at least there are posters who are able to keep me updated on what is actually happening.
