Navy called upon to defend UK fishing boats against French

so what next?

the French call upon their navy to defend French fishing boats against the British navy?

French and British warships pointing guns at each other?

who would have expected that possibility to be seriously discussed on the news, even as little as 3 days ago?

British fishing boats who feel that Brexit releases them from the "gentlemans agreement" not to fish when the French are leaving scallops to breed.

French fishing boats retaliating with rocks and bottles, ramming, firing flares into British ships, "smoke bombs" ( which some are claiming were actual fire bombs) This is piracy undoubtably

British captains recommending carrying arms, to protect their crews.

Navy called on to provide protection.

The UK government needs to step in and order British ships out of these waters.

The French government needs to investigate the incidents and bring charges, with heavy prison sentences for anyone convicted.

This is ridiculous, and it needs sorting now, before things escalate.

The British ships shouldn’t have gone to that area. They are the ones in the wrong.

The French response was acceptable.

It would be interesting to know if the British boats actually had 'nets in water' or were just 'cruising'.
Having been 'agreeing gentlemanly' for 5 years (as mentioned previously) it is suspicious that such an occurrence happened now.

The British boats were not fishing in French waters. They have every legal right to be there. The British always fish these waters and only ever take about 10% of the scallops so it's far from true that they are going to strip the sea beds. There has been a written agreement between the British and French fishing organisation for the last 5 years but they have not agreed this year.
As for Rossetti's suggestion that we did something terrible to the French in WW2 pray please do tell me what that could be.

The British navy attacked the french fleet at Mers-el-Kébir, following the french signing an armistice with the Germans, after the french surrendered and the vichy Gov was formed, we wre worried french ships would fall into German hands.
1300 french sailors were killed, the French and British were allies at the time.

Perhaps the lesson from history is that we should sink all the french fishing boats in Le Havre to avoid another Scallop war?

Nice new, very expensive aircraft carrier tootling over to America to collect the jets that will live on it. Late arrival, and the USA will probably not give the rights to 'servicing' of the jets to the UK, as at present some jets have to be serviced in Turkey.
Taking back control!
British 'heavy' trawlers ripping up the breeding grounds of scallops. Deliberate vandalism if you ask me.
The UK is going to need a lot of 'good will' in the future as aspects seen a 'expectations' due to being in the EU will not be automatic in the future.
Poking a wasps nest is never a good idea.

No probably about it. It was unlikely under Obama, and will be impossible under Trump.

Plus the engines will need to be rail/road freighted from the UK to Turkey (presumably through the EU ?), and returned the same way, as the US won't allow the planes to stand in Turkey because of the danger of espionage. (From memory they're not worried about the jet technology so much, as the avionics).

I find myself wondering what the US will need to find acceptable in any UK-EU deal to allow those engines to cross borders ?
