Despite all the accusations of hysteria for those saying they intend to prep, today Theresa May said households were going to be given guidelines in August and September on how to prepare in the event of No Deal.

Robert Peston@Peston
@theresa_may says 70 "technical notices" for businesses and households will be published in Aug and Sept setting out how we can all prepare for a no-deal Brexit (should that be what happens). Yikes

Arla are already warning that milk product may be scare and baby formula will be 'an occasional luxury' even if we do get a deal
Dairy products 'may become luxuries' after UK leaves EU

Whilst we wait for the government to advise us on what action we all need to consider taking, this is a thread dedicated for those people who wish to share tips, advice and what they plan to do rather than clogging up other threads.

Sorry -should have read ‘seems my hope diminishes.

Ken Dodd

This makes me so angry, and yet it seems loads of people are all for it.

I do find myself thinking rather differently about that Winston Churchill quote, which I seem to remember annoyed me when I first heard it many years ago:

“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

StUmbrageinSkelt · 25/07/2018 09:40

Learn to make bread if you can. A breadmaker depends on electricity but hand kneaded bread can be cooked on a BBQ as flatbread or in a Dutch oven.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 25/07/2018 09:41

I should point out I’m not anti democratic, I’m actually fearful the referendum is the start of the erosion of our democratic rights and freedoms. I fear we may be heading towards an ultra right-wing government.

pennycarbonara · 25/07/2018 09:42

It does seem to be getting to a head, with ministers being forced to make announcements etc so I suspect they will end up trying harder to make some sort of deal and/or set up trade agreements which can be signed very soon after 29 March

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 25/07/2018 09:42

(Adds Dutch oven to shopping list...)

StUmbrageinSkelt · 25/07/2018 09:44

A Dutch oven on the BBQ I mean.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 25/07/2018 09:46

pennycarbonara. I hope so. I’m clinging on to the hope that things are being ramped up to make whatever deal they eventually strike (please, please strike a deal) more palatable to the 52.

We've purposefully spent a lot over the past year because the future is so uncertain.

Yes we've done the same for essentials hence the new tumble dryer arriving today and yesterdays delivery of some necessary garden tools. But we're now switching to saving (not that we would then keep everything in the bank).

I don't however think people should go out and buy new electronics or decorate and do cosmetic home improvements. These things can wait since it may well be that the money is better spent in other ways.

Read "The Mandibles". Its about a very similar situation in the US where food costs a fortune and people struggle to keep going. Seemed like complete fantasy when I read it a while back. Now it could be very real. And you only have to look at the situation they are facing in Venezuela where they're predicted to hit one million percent inflation by the end of the year to see how it is sensible to have a decent stockpile of essentials put by.

Our prepping to date:

We have a house in Germany, split into two halves, one let long term, the other used as a holiday let. We are not taking bookings on the Holiday let for next year.

Our house here is being renovated / decorated with a view to letting it. We own another house here, currently let,, which we've put up for sale.

I've moved about half of our capital into German accounts, reduced exposure to UK equity and brought physical gold.

I've applied for my Irish passport, DW is German and has done her form AN1 (looking like a complete waste of £1330). Our DC are Anglo-German by birth, currently have British passports. We are half way through getting their German ones (done the Namenserklarung bit).

I haven't got a fucking clue what to do about the business and it's breaking my heart. I employ 230 people in England. 52% of them can fuck off to the sunlit uplands on a fucking unicorn, of course.

DH and I are in the process of buying our first property and I am five months pregnant. There is a lot of cupboard space in the new place, but not really enough here in our one bed flat, so we can't start prepping until we move (which the sellers are ensuring takes a ridiculously long time). I am just satisfying myself with writing lists.

One consideration is how important it could be to be able to breastfeed if everything goes to pot in March, when we will have a 4/5 month old.

I already have an allotment but tbh the Brexit date is smack bang in the middle of the hungry gap, and will be of no use then.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 25/07/2018 14:28

Does anyone work in education and know if schools have a plan re school dinners? I know the majority are supplied by outside contractors but have there been any meetings?
We were thinking of switching our DC to school dinners from packed lunches if perhaps the government decided to guarantee the availability of these meals.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 25/07/2018 14:32

This is an issue here too. Also pregnant and I’ve previously had DC where breastfeeding wasn’t successful and finding a formula that they would take to was a struggle. Having some tins of formula in would be ideal but I don’t know which to get.

@Fuckedoffat48b - good point about timing and the hungry gap. Hopefully you'll still have some stuff around from the allotment. If not (or in addition) look at seed sprouts. You can buy all sorts of gear now but I remember when I was younger sprouting eg chick peas and mung beans in large reused (pickle?) jars with a cut up net curtain and an elastic band for the filter bit. Obviously won't fill the hungry gap if you are used to fresh home grown veg but it might help.

bellinisurge · 25/07/2018 16:27

@UglyCathKidstonBag - just reminded me for all my smart arse advice, I don't have any baked beans in my stash - we all love baked beans Blush

Whatthefoxgoingon · 25/07/2018 16:43

Oh dear bellini, prepper FAIL. Grin

We eat all the baked beans before the reach the stash too....

Whatthefoxgoingon · 25/07/2018 16:44

They. Oh for an edit button....

bellinisurge · 25/07/2018 16:53

@Whatthefoxgoingon - I have the same issue with teabags GrinBlush

cloudtree · 25/07/2018 16:55

DH gets twitchy if we have less than 36 tins of baked beans in the house. Its the only element of my prepping that he's properly on board with Grin

UglyCathKidstonBag · 25/07/2018 16:55

We go through tins and tins of baked beans here, so I thought it best to have some “untouchables” for the stash. These ones have a 2021 date on, so they have a while before they make it into the kitchen.

This weekend we are buying some more shelves for our camping gear and we’ll have an extra layer behind that for extra preps. The dates of everything on those few shelves will be 2021 and later.

I’m going to read up about sprouts this evening.

One thing we took to doing this year was growing in the kitchen using scraps. So spring onions from the tops of spring onions and carrot greens from carrot tops.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 25/07/2018 16:56

I think the country will fall apart if the teabags can’t get in. Grin

cloudtree · 25/07/2018 17:02

I almost killed my entire family when we were snowed in for a week with no diet coke so I am going to need a very good stash of caffeine.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 25/07/2018 17:09

Farmfoods have a good deal on Diet Coke at the moment (just had the leaflet through the door). 3 cases of 24 cans for £20.

LikesAnimalPark · 25/07/2018 18:58

Costco is fantastic valu for bulk buying. Getting membership is a faff tho. Normal price Heinz baked beans were £9.99 for a 24 box or 42p per can. Persil non bio huge box, 130 washes, £10.39. Huggies baby wipes 10 pack box, £4.79. Huge bag of teabags, £7ish. Really good value for a lot of tinned goods.
