Despite all the accusations of hysteria for those saying they intend to prep, today Theresa May said households were going to be given guidelines in August and September on how to prepare in the event of No Deal.

Robert Peston@Peston
@theresa_may says 70 "technical notices" for businesses and households will be published in Aug and Sept setting out how we can all prepare for a no-deal Brexit (should that be what happens). Yikes

Arla are already warning that milk product may be scare and baby formula will be 'an occasional luxury' even if we do get a deal
Dairy products 'may become luxuries' after UK leaves EU

Whilst we wait for the government to advise us on what action we all need to consider taking, this is a thread dedicated for those people who wish to share tips, advice and what they plan to do rather than clogging up other threads.

Well done @RosinaAlmaviva - just remember that stuff doesn't charge as well through a window (sadly). Experiment with what works best for you.

SusanWalker · 22/07/2018 18:22

Was browsing on Amazon and found this earlier.

www.amazon.co.uk/Eye-Caring-Charging-Dimmable-Children-Lighting/dp/B07CJ51KR2/ref=sr_1_109?keywords=daylight+lamp&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1532279899&sr=8-109

It's a lamp that you charge up, but also has a USB port so can be used as a rechargeable power bank as well. I'm thinking of getting one of these. I think if there are power cuts they will be intermittent and possibly planned.

I'm also going to save up for a bread maker, then I can store some flour and yeast just before brexit, in case there's a bread shortage.

The window is open but I'm not sure the radio is charging. The solar panel is supposed to glow red and it's not doing.

It is overclouded though and has been all day so I'll try another time - plenty of direct sunlight most days atm.

Only get stuff you know you will eat. DH for example doesn't like rice pudding (more for me!) He does like tinned mackerel - which I don't but neither of us like marmite, so there is no use stocking up with that, even if there is a special offer on it.

TheElementsSong · 22/07/2018 19:38

Only get stuff you know you will eat.

Damn.

^^

CurrentlyAwayFromTheCompuer · 22/07/2018 22:23

InterestIn getting thread.

Tried to start the discussion with DH but he thinks it is all y2k scaremongering :/

Will follow along and do what I can!

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 06:23

@CurrentlyAwayFromTheCompuer it's frustrating that some are seeing discussion of this as scaremongering and hyperbole. I've been a prepper for a couple of years - had some bad winter weather issues locally that I want to be on the right side of- but dh sort of chuckled at it. Now he is a bit more on board because of current events.
Keep it low key and let him come around to it. I have found making my lot responsible for coming up with ideas for fun stuff and treats for the stash has helped.

FashionTheLook · 23/07/2018 07:16

Amazon using the EU to tax dodge have set the cat amongst the pigeons, as a worst case scenario they predict civil unrest within two weeks of a hard Brexit.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 08:06

I assume a lot of gobshite-ery as businesses jockey for position and advantage. However, I focus on my family and making sure there is a cushion of food stuff in my house. As I regular witter on this and other threads, I am a prepper and this is the sort of thing I prep for. The key being it is a prep not a prediction. May never need it. Hope I never need it. Not interested in deciphering gobshites ; only interested in my family.

TheElementsSong · 23/07/2018 09:02

This came up on my Twitter feed:

twitter.com/joelymack/status/1021120879424606208

I've been accused of 'scaremongering' over medical supply shortages. My daughter needs catheterised through a stoma in her navel every 3hrs to SURVIVE. Her catheters come from Denmark. What happens if they run out? I've every right to ask, my child's LIFE depends on it.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 09:50

@TheElementsSong - this sort of horrible example is exactly why people who can put stuff by should put stuff by. It frees up emergency services and similar to deal with actual emergencies rather than "Tesco doesn't have any pasta today - what can I feed my kids?" emergencies .

pennycarbonara · 23/07/2018 10:23

Something I've thought of doing before but not got round to investigating properly - getting a windowbox to fit to an upstairs windowledge to charge solar things. (I use some regularly anyway.)

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 10:35

@pennycarbonara - it doesn't need to be bright Mediterranean sun to charge things but, as you seem to be correctly suggesting, stuff will charge better if there isn't a window in between the light and it. I recently hung a portable charger off a window handle. Which wasn't as sensible as what you suggested but it did work Grin

pennycarbonara · 23/07/2018 10:44

Things definitely charge a lot faster outdoors in bright sunlight versus indoor windowledges. If you use the item regularly for hours at a time it really makes a difference.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 11:04

@pennycarbonara - in my hanging off the window experiment- the charger hung outside. Which is why it worked albeit precariously.

MotherWol · 23/07/2018 11:32

I've started slowly building up our storecupboard - I usually have a few extra things in, but having seen how food supplies were disrupted during the snow, it seems like a good idea to prepare for more disruption in March. Can I ask what people are doing about fruit & veg? We don't normally buy much in cans, preferring fresh or frozen, but are there any varieties that taste ok canned? I've got memories of slimy tinned potatoes from school dinners Envy. We live in a flat with no outside space, so growing our own isn't an option.

pennycarbonara · 23/07/2018 11:42

Tinned mushrooms can be really nice. I think they create more flavour in stews and soup than fresh ones.

Peregrina · 23/07/2018 11:44

I think tinned carrots can be OK too.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 11:53

Tinned is included as an option for your "Five a day" in nhs bumf. Stuff is a lot nicer than when you had it at school. Texture might be an issue but nothing that some spices or a packet of cheese sauce (or whatever) can't improve.

MotherWol · 23/07/2018 12:20

I'm going to get a few cans and try them out to see what works best for us - after all, there's no point on stocking up on something we don't actually want to eat! Also going to learn to make yogurt from dried milk - I'm not keen on drinking it, but it's a good way to get protein and calcium into DD's diet if fresh milk supplies are disrupted.

PinstripeElephant · 23/07/2018 12:25

Well, I've bought the Asda smart price peas, carrots, rice pudding, soups, and custard.

I'll try and feedback! Each were about 15-20p per tin, so if decent would be idea to stock up on in bulk.

bellinisurge · 23/07/2018 12:30

@PinstripeElephant - often the "cheaper" stuff is the same as the fancier stuff but in bland packaging. And sometimes it's not. Road testing is a good idea.

prettybird · 23/07/2018 12:59

We used to have tinned whole corn on the cob a lot when I was wee - nearly as good as the real thing Smile

Tinned fruit - pears, peaches, cherries - are nice.

I have a Victoria plum tree that has a whopper harvest this year (actually it has whopper harvests every year Confused - but this year is a particularly whopper one Grin) so after I've made multiple batches of chutney and jam, I might then go on to make preserved plums in syrup. And plum gin - plenty thereof WinkGin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/07/2018 13:00

I've bought a months worth of cat food today. Check the dates on pet food it can be short.
