Westministenders: High Drama at The Ok Coral

3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 1881, Tombstone, Arizona.

After months of death threats from the Cowboy Billys, their long simmering feud with the law thing came to a head. The Earp Brothers and Doc Holliday faced the criminals down in a shootout.

Tomorrow's 'sleepover' is starting to feel like the Gunfight at the OK Coral.

The outcome of the real story was three of the outlaws were killed. Another two claimed they were unarmed and ran from the fight. Virgil, Morgan, and Doc Holliday were wounded, but Wyatt Earp was unharmed.

How many Brexiteers can we expect to roll over and resign from the Cabinet and how many will surrender to May and the Pro-Business lobby? ONly time will tell.

Please place your bets for the number of resignations and the number of 'I support the PM' comments.

But don't get too excited. The showdown wasn't the end of the matter.

One of the outlaws who legged it, filed murder charges against the Earps and Doc Holliday. It took them some time for them to be acquitted.

Then Virgil Earp was ambushed and disabled in the arm later that year in December and Morgan Earp was assassinated in March 1882. Wyatt Earp, then thinking he had no other option, went on a personal vendetta to kill the outlaws and then fled the state.

Given the Tory Cabinet and the perchant for stabbing each other in the back and settling personal scores, a repeat of a wild west gun fight, really doesn't sound too wildly off the cards now does it?

Buckle up. Its time to play at Chequers.

I'd be surprized if May lasts as PM now.

I mean, this is probably doing the rounds, but if you've not seen it - here's Dominic Raab's level of commitment to EU worker protections:

1 - exclude small businesses and start-ups from having to pay the minimum wage to under-21s, and other rights
www.cps.org.uk/files/reports/original/111114155257-escapingthestraitjacket.pdf

Oh look here's new Brexit minister Dominic Raab calling for... the abolition of EU-based workers' rights
9 Abolish the Agency Workers Regulations 2010
10 Abolish the Working Time Regulations 1998

Raab talking specifically about the EU here:

Would May be as cynical as to call an election if England were to win the world cup ?

I've been thinking this.

RedToothBrush · 09/07/2018 11:05

Here's also this guy.

From 2011
www.theguardian.com/politics/2011/jan/27/theresa-may-attacks-dominc-raab-feminist
Theresa May attacks Tory MP Dominic Raab over 'feminist bigots' remark
'Labelling feminists as obnoxious bigots is not the way forward,' home secretary tells Raab

Theresa May today slapped down a backbench Tory MP who called feminists "obnoxious bigots", telling him his comments were "not the way forward" if he wanted to tackle sexism in the workplace.

Dominic Raab, MP for Esher and Walton, claimed men were "getting a raw deal" amid a row over the cost of implementing the Labour government's Equality Act.

He's really not a fan of ANY rights.

Or women. Or the poor. Or foreigners.

Just as well that no one knows what the Brexit Secretary actually does and that Ollie Robbins is head of negogiations. At least for now.

Meanwhile the Irish border tweets into the abyss.

@BorderIrish

David Davis 0-1 Me
FT .Me to play Theresa May in the semi-final.
........,
Gary Lineker: Congratulations, Border. What were your tactics for this game?
Me: Same as usual. Defend myself and then wait for the Tories to score an own goal.
Gary: Good luck in the semis.
Me: Thanks, Gary, but I won’t need it.

Kevin Schofield @ polhomeeditor
Tory MP says Gavin Barwell’s briefing on Brexit for opposition MPs has “probably sealed Theresa May’s fate”. They say: “It’s the last throw of the dice for a desperate and beleaguered PM. If she’s pulling stunts like that, it’s the end of the road.”

The fact is that #Brexit was sold on a false prospectus. As Parliament is not now going to have a meaningful final vote, people should be able to give their own verdict on the deal. #peoplesvote

Childrenofthesun · 09/07/2018 11:08

What we need is for England to win the world cup and then for Gareth Southgate to announce brexit is cancelled.

There is some merit to that idea! I have been hoping England do well but don't win, as the resulting hysteria would be unbearable, but given people are still going on about 1966 I think the average Brexiter could easily have their attention taken away from Brexit long enough to get the softest of soft deals signed off without making too much fuss about it.

DGRossetti · 09/07/2018 11:10

Meanwhile, my weekly spam check reveals that (a) I have been unknowingly signed up to the Tory party propaganda machine, and (b) it's been treated as spam by the heuristics of my mail provider.

I wonder what a request as to where they recorded my opt in would reveal ? My bet is it would be ignored. At which point I'd need to consult my GDPR pixies as to whether it's actionable.

But, in the zeitgeist, I'm happy with the knowledge that a lot of people won't be getting the message anytime soon.

(Footnote. The email was explicitly from Theresa May and the Conservatives. Presumably not such a bit festival act as Florence and The Machine ?)

SusanWalker · 09/07/2018 11:11

Chris Leslie
@ChrisLeslieMP
Ideological attachment to hard Brexit was never going to survive contact with economic - or parliamentary - reality.

That’s why hard Brexiteers are throwing their toys out of the pram.

Prime Minister should have forced them to confront this before triggering Article 50 #Brexit

RedToothBrush · 09/07/2018 11:12

May's schedule for the week

Western Balkan's Summit, NATO summit and Trump's Visit.

What else is going on:
England v Croatia (and either a final or third place play off)
A citizen murders by Novichok
Chequers and Davis Fall Out (and possible leadership challenge)

This is not what I call 'ideal'.

frumpety · 09/07/2018 11:13

So Raab is SoS for DExEU ? Close ally of Gove ? Will he be at the meeting regarding the Chequers deal that Labour and Lib dem MPs have been invited to ?

DGRossetti · 09/07/2018 11:16

Prime Minister should have forced them to confront this before triggering Article 50

We return to this. Will history judge this to be the assassination of Franz Ferdinand moment for Brexit ? And if it does, there will be no escaping the fact that it was the Brexiteers that pushed for it, and the Remainers that sought to stop it - going as far to a high court action.

Brexit failed because of the Brexiteers. It's a pleasing epitaph.

DGRossetti · 09/07/2018 11:17

Surely to become SoS, Raab must have signed up to the Chequers fudge agreement ?

DGRossetti · 09/07/2018 11:17

(posted too soon)

or are we back to having nothing to show the EU ?

RedToothBrush · 09/07/2018 11:19

Thin win in a referendum
Repeal Act
Attacks of foreigners' shops
Weaponised sporting tournament: either way it's being used, whatever the result it will not bring anything good.
Shackled media.

At least one can't accuse them of originality.

Smile great to see you MrsHooliesWaistcoat

Dead ringers parody resignation letter on Daily Politics just now. Andrea Pearson looked like she was sucking on lemons. Mind you she quite often looks like that.
