Brexit

Brexiteers in South Wales

I'm extremely worried about what is coming in South Wales (I only mention South because I live here), given that Westminster have already stated they won't match the funding we currently receive from being members of the EU. Despite living in one of the richest countries in the world, South Wales is amongst the poorest in Europe.

Do you have faith that Westminster will look after our part of the UK? Can you explain to me why you think Brexit is a good idea for Wales and how we will benefit? I can only see things getting worse for many parts of Wales.

I'm really struggling to get my head around this viewpoint and apologies if it's been covered in other threads. When you speak to people in RL they can't actually discuss it with you other than spouting the headlines or BF type posts. I'm not here to goad or wind people up I just really want to know from people can actually give me reasons.

I appreciate the Irish situation is far more complicated and deserving of discussion, but I've yet to see many people discussing Wales on here.

I don't think Cameron was clever enough to organise such a conspiracy!

neverseenstarwars · 17/03/2018 14:23

Itinerary I don't think anyone actually wants it to go pear-shaped. We have very real concerns. When we voice these concerns we're told to shut up and "get over it." Leanne Wood and PC are pushing very hard for Wales' best interests during the Brexit process, but they are being shouted down by Welsh people who see it as trying to block Brexit.

I accept that it is happening, doesn't mean to say I want to sit back and just wait to see what happens. You never know, parliamentary reform may happen but it will take years and years. And if they can take free school meals away from our poorest children, what hope is there that the old industrial areas like South Wales will be high on their agenda? As I said, Westminster have already stated they won't match the current funding we get from the EU.

OK Itinerary, you are a Leaver, fair enough. But the issue we were discussing is the economic impact on Wales. There a hard sea border that will appear between Wales and Ireland a year tomorrow. The government doesn't even appear to have noticed it's an issue, let alone taken steps to mitigate any potential problems.

Everyone in power appears to be looking at Northern Ireland as it's a political problems, but not Wales as it's an economic one.

mrsreynolds · 19/03/2018 18:02

They can cry me a fucking river 😡

And Cornwall leave voters😡

And hull...and Grimsby (who are both now bleating for special status as they've realised brexit will devastate their livlihoods)😡

They can suffer with the rest of us, the mouth breathing knuckle draggers 😡

gussyfinknottle · 19/03/2018 18:31

Mrsr, can't pretend I don't think like this. Lots of regular visits to Wales. Was horrified to see the vote going the way it did. If people in Wales think Westminster will replace EU funding they are sadly misguided.

mrsreynolds · 19/03/2018 18:39

It's am awful way to feel

The constant anger and rage

My kids futures up the spout for WHAT?

😡

mrsreynolds · 19/03/2018 18:40

Pembrokeshire a regular holiday for us

No more

tinytemper66 · 19/03/2018 19:03

I live on the coast in SW Wales but teach in The valleys. I voted remain. One reason was the funding the areas received from EU plus my school is made up of 40% EAL pupils. It is incredulous that people bit of their noses to spite their faces.
The area I teach in has been transformed with EU money. Our school has a plaque in it regarding some funding.
I know many of the EAL pupils have left since the vote and gone back home and some feel unwelcome by the message sent.
Too many voted with narrow minds.

gussyfinknottle · 19/03/2018 19:07

Spent lots of tourism £ across wales throughout my long life. It's wonderful to see heritage sites have really upped their game to bring in more tourism £. With EU money. It wouldn't come from Westminster. Cadw doesn't have the funds. All down the toilet now.

londonista · 19/03/2018 19:54

MrsReynolds definitely understand the anger but there's real people going to suffer at the end of this. Hand on heart not a single one of us knew what we were voting for. I voted status quo because I saw more good than bad, and also I haven't been badly affected by Tory austerity.

People in Wales didn't, partly because the Labour Party who represents almost all of Wales is led by a Brexiteer who didn't make it clear to them what was at stake.

gussyfinknottle · 19/03/2018 19:59

I'm confused. Am I supposed to feel sorry for people who acted like turkeys voting for Christmas? We all had access to much the same information. We all had an equal opportunity to question what we were told.
If anyone voted Leave just to stick it to the Tories, I have no sympathy for them.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 19/03/2018 20:06

I'm another who couldn't believe that the poorer areas of the UK were voting to leave. I do believe that Corbyn has to take responsibility - talk about bloody dithering. If he'd said, "Listen, your area is getting £X from Europe. If we leave you'll get £X less." then I would've had a lot more respect for him.

I blame David Cameron for giving us the referendum in the first place, when nobody knew the real impact and some were incapable of guessing, but also Corbyn for letting down all those poor areas that Labour has always tried to protect.

mrsreynolds · 19/03/2018 20:52

Yes
Normal people like me will suffer too
I'm done trying to understand
I'm angry
And im going to the pro brexit March on June 23rd

Figmentofmyimagination · 21/03/2018 18:03

Is there seriously a pro brexit March on the 23rd of June? Who would march in favour of this mess? Hope there are enough Zimmer frames and defibrilators to go around.

gussyfinknottle · 21/03/2018 19:19

A pro-Brexit March? Sounds hilarious. FWIW, most of the Leave voters I know are under 30. And uni- educated. The last vote my late mum cast (she was in her 80s) was to vote Remain.
I'm old and voted Remain too.

mrsreynolds · 22/03/2018 08:11

Oh ffs
ANTI BREXIT MARCH
me and my clumsy fingers!
🤣🤣🤣😣

mrsreynolds · 22/03/2018 08:12

Just fyi
In brexitland...

In one day alone it was:

•	Questions about CA and SCL asked at Westminster .The Information Commissioner still seeking a warrant.Evidence of contact between Cameron and Johnson with the group's senior management.
•	Rees Mogg flailing to fling fish into the Thames and an ex kipper (now radio presenter) flippering some in for him.
•	Then the foreign sec compared the imminent World Cup in Russia to the 1936 Munich Olympics ( likening Putin to Hitler).
•	The blue passports being printed in France (cost £ 490 million).
•	Scotland gearing up for a new legal Battle of Flodden over the Westminster attempted power grab.
•	Car manufacturers ditching use of the British Vehicle Certification Agency.
neverseenstarwars · 22/03/2018 11:20

mrsr I have to say I find the passports news very funny (I'm known to be very childish at times Grin). Imagine! We get back our blue British passports - from an EU country. Some people in Wales are also gearing up for a battle over the "power grab." Sadly, not enough I fear.

I've had a bit of spare time this morning and been reading some of the Leavers Lagoon thread. Leavers who can't come up with anything to actually be positive about when asked, but calling anyone putting forward concerns and very real points, trolls.

OP posts:
BreakWindandFire · 22/03/2018 11:26

Going back to the border issue, there's been a warning this week that any delays on cross-border supply could damage the Welsh aerospace industry which employs 12000 and is one of the fastest growing industries in Wales at the moment.

The industry operates on a 'just in time' supply model. If you want to see what happens when a JIT chain goes wrong, look at KFC last month.

TomRavenscroft · 22/03/2018 12:22

Didn't about three people and a dog turn up to the last pro-Brexit march?

gussyfinknottle · 22/03/2018 13:05

Poor dog. At least it got a walk, I suppose.

TomRavenscroft · 22/03/2018 14:00
Grin
mrsreynolds · 22/03/2018 16:01

Indeed! Very funny pic on fb showing the 3 people and the dog.

I find the leavers lagoon fascinating...in a morbid sort of way.

"So...you're really positive about leaving the eu!? Great! Coz I'm really worried and sad.
Can you give me some positives? Facts, Figures?"

[Sucks teeth] ooooh they didnt like that question one bit 🤣😣

mrsreynolds · 22/03/2018 16:02

And also I'm old enough to remember pre EU passports and they were bloody black!!!!

Peregrina · 22/03/2018 17:20

No, they were a very dark navy. If you put them against a black one, the majority of people would have seen a difference.
