Westminstenders: From Russia with Love

Things just got scary.

The colony of US puppet state or a vassel state of the EU?

Why not just let market forces take their course and let Russia buy the UK?

How did we get to stories of spies and mafia who buy politicians?

Just who are our enemies and allies?

Won't someone think of the effect on house prices in Salisbury?

Try not to don your foil hat, brace yourself and resist shouting 'money laundering too loud'.

More turbulence ahead.

Brexit still seems like such a cracking idea doesn't it?

If I was that exceptionally blinkered I wouldn't trust anyone involved with the Labour party either Hmm.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 12:41

War? All Russia has to do is turn the gas pipeline off like they did in the Ukraine or use that new sub they have built by now to cut our cables.
I'm actually worried about how many of our fans are going to end up in Russian prisons after the football under false charges ( or how many get hurt and beat up). I think England team should not go.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 12:43

Never assume anything is my motto.

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 15/03/2018 12:51

mother sadly I think it's one of those things that just aren't that simple. I think this insistence we have 100% proof or certainty of everything is what has lead to feelz becoming more important than facts. Otoh of course, the need for scrutiny that Iraq should have taught us is highly important. Do we have the structures in place so the right people are scrutinizing effectively (rhetorically, I'm sure you don't personally know of course!)? It's a minefield.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:11

I expect May to take full opportunity to divert our eyes and ears well away from the disaster that is brexit. Must he a real godsend to her. She blooming needs it. Useless priminister!

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:13

Glad someone us agreeing with me a bit.

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 15/03/2018 13:14

I see Macron had joined Trump in the reverse ferret stakes.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:17

Hello a door in Grenfell tower did not hold the fire back for as long as it should have. I.e lasted only 15 minutes instead if 30 minutes. It now raises questions about whether tenants are really safe in social housing. The simple answer is NO!

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:20

Yes joint statement made dobby. Another adage of mine is what they say is not what they necessarily do! If our tiff with Russia gets seriously out of hand will they really back us?

The government is hiding its Brexit plans by making firms sign secretive 'gagging agreements'

The government is reportedly making companies sign secretive non-disclosure agreements preventing them from publishing the impact of Brexit.

Numerous firms which operate Britain's borders have agreed not to share information on how Brexit could impact trade.

The government has signed "many dozens" of secretive non-disclosure agreements with companies and industry groups, according to reports.

Elenagreco ......no surprise there then!

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 15/03/2018 13:26

Only if it suits their purposes, much like we would if the shoe was on the other foot. As is completely normally in international relations.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:27

I mean did you believe Hammond's spring report? Nope.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:29

And this is the danger dobby. Its OK pushing for sanctions etc but by gum you had better have someone looking after your back!

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 15/03/2018 13:33

Such a shame were making enemies out of our friends then. It's not like that was mentioned before the referendum. Oh no, wait. It was just project fear.

The chickens haven't even come home to roost yet either.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:38

Security I think will be important for Europe whether we are in or not. If anything happens to us it will affect Europe and vice versa. I believe that strongly, I want to believe that, I need to believe that.

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:38

I know it!

Sostenueto · 15/03/2018 13:44

The UK’s strength in the world derives from our historic commitment to internationalism, something many will see as having been weakened by our decision to leave the EU. It is therefore vital we reaffirm our commitment to our main defence partners – NATO, the United States and France. The UK should also seek ways of continuing to participate in inter-governmental aspects of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, as RUSI and the Centre for European Reform have argued.

Any fallout from our leaving the EU, whether through weakening our public finances or a decline in our international standing, must not have a harmful impact on our wider defence and security policies. It is vital, therefore, that it does not result in the compromising of either our NATO spending commitments nor our planned investment in international development.

MichaelBendfaster · 15/03/2018 13:49

I am hugely disturbed by Lord Callanan’s appearance in the HoL and his assertion that ‘the will of the people’ overrides parliamentary sovereignty.

This strikes at the very basis of consent and government.

What do we do about it? How do you make your opinions known to the HoL? I've written to my MP but she hardly ever replies and is generally useless.

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 15/03/2018 13:49

I'm glad you believe that sos. Sadly it's the UK who've threatened to withdraw security cooperation with the EU not the other way. So you may want to petition the government on that one.
