Yay for the blue passports.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all

May next year bring us £350 million for the NHS, cake, unicorns, financial passporting, access to the single market, Irish love and of course control to the people.

(Apologies been up to my eyeballs. Normal service will resume after Christmas).

I can't speak for others, but I'm reading this thread for the current affairs updates and general analysis, although I haven't seen much of it for the past few days. Here's hoping normal service resumes shortly (especially measured dissent a la Corcory and howabout - I might not agree with them, but I appreciate what they bring to the debate).

RedToothBrush · 26/12/2017 17:25

How much Sherry do you think gets consumed annually on Boxing Day?

Backpacking across Europe is very different to being allowed to work there in a regular job.
Different to a young qualified person being able to get experience to put on their CV, as I was able to in Germany, back in the 1980s.

Vacations in the EU will still happen, same as British people can holiday in the US, but find it much tougher to be allowed to work there than in the EU

In the EU, the usual criterion for non-EU citizens to be allowed to work and live there longterm is that there is no EU citizen available to do the job.

That's the criterion at my large German firm - doesn't affect the Indians, S Koreans etc in my department, because there is a shortage of experienced scientists in our field
However, non-EU citizens are not even considered for the science or tech internships , because there is such competition for them

And of course unskilled and semi-skilled British workers will have far fewer opportunities to work in EU countries after a hard Brexit, because it is mobile MC professionals that are being wooed

The science brain-drain out of Britain started right after the EU ref - I was part of it.
There won't much of be a unskilled drain, because who wants them ?

So........we've had a heap of reports about the tone of recent posts. Can we remind everyone to respect one another's opinion and keep things as cordial as possible, when disagreeing.

We know how many of you enjoy the hell out of this thread so we're saddened to see holes appearing and wouldn't want things to get any worse. Here's to normal service being resumed shortly as Arborea says.

Gosh, I know my post was a bit snarky, but I didn't think it was that bad. Confused

TheElementsSong · 26/12/2017 17:45

Oh dear, what just happened?

LineyRunner · 26/12/2017 17:53

Did you quote the other one, Bigly?

BigChocFrenzy · 26/12/2017 17:57

Anyone worried about fascism should look at the far right, who stalk and threaten politicians & judges, suspected of obstructing Brexit
those the Daily Heil / Express / Sun call "Enemies of the People", "saboteurs," "traitors"

Worry that the Daily Heil are back to their "Hoorah for the Blackshirts" glory days of the 1930s, scapegoating minorities

Worry that a fascist terrorist murdered a prominent Remain MP
Worry that other Remain and soft Brexit MPs suffer threats of murder and rape

Anyone worried about the rise of fascism should be looking at all those Brexiters in politics, media and online forums - like MN - who fiercely support far-right parties in Europe and the USA

The adoration by many Brexiters of Marie Le Pen and her Front National - and their anger when she lost
The adoration of the anti-immigrant German AdF party - and Farage visiting Germany to support them during the recent GE

Those same far-right parties supported Farage & co in the EU referendum campaign - The Front National were particularly prominent.

Brexiters worried about fascism should wonder why fascists support Brexit so strongly

Don't let the occasional troll disrupt the thread - it's their intention

Keep discussing the issues and don't feed them

An old Alas Smith and Jones sketch Xmas Grin

Tory MP:

"You know, a little old lady came up to me the other day and said, why oh why can't it be like it was in the good old days?

So I took away her pension book and stuck her grandson up a chimney."

Happy Christmas one and all , although a bit belated due to working yesterday Xmas Smile

HermioneAndTheSniffle · 26/12/2017 18:14

BigChoc I agree with you the reaction to Marine Lepen.
I was Shock to see so many supporting her when she is very clearly from the far right.
And even more Shock to realise that actually for many people that way of thinking is now THE NORM.

There has been a very clear movement of thinking to the right. Labour (esp with TB) was more in the center right than on the left and Tories are often more on the far right than in the right.

I find that scary tbh.

prettybird · 26/12/2017 18:16

Do you think it's time for some recipes and garden tips? Xmas Wink

I can post up a seasonally appropriate recipe for my Danish (half German, half English, brought up in Denmark thanks to WW1) granny's recipe for Danish rice pudding (their Christmas pudding with chopped almonds and one whole almond)? Or I could post up a photo from this morning of our snowy garden Xmas Grin

But there again, as a delusional Remain voter, not only am I non-British born with loads of European "blood" mixed in to my South African and Australian ancestry, I am old enough (at 56) to remember life before the EEC and travelling abroad during currency controls. I also had to register to work and couldn't open a "full" bank account when I spent a year working in France in 1979/80 as part of my elitist degree Xmas Hmm But what do I know, I'm only a feeble minded female?

frumpety · 26/12/2017 18:19

Male this 90 yr plan that is on display in one of the halls of the EU , any links to an actual picture of it and any information regarding the reason for it being there ?

frumpety · 26/12/2017 18:21

Sorry BigChoc Xmas Blush

HermioneAndTheSniffle · 26/12/2017 18:23

Well I’m finding this thread quite entertaining today.
So much non sense from some (one) poster. And their way to shoot themsleves in the foot by presenting things as THE truth when it’s actually totally (and factually) wrong....

Can I assume that whenever someone behaves that way I can also safely consider that their position on any subject (incl Brexit) can not be seen a reliable?? Grin

pretty I’m sorry I will useless at sharing recipes and gardening tips.
Maybe that’s coming from the latest results of a test I did recently saying that I am 70% male but only 20% female Wink
