Westministenders: The Return of Parliamentary Sleaze?

Brexit is quietly going round and round in ever decreasing circles.

The story is that the European parliament will not agree to a transition period beyond 1st January 2020.

The third minister responsible for getting the Repel Bill through the Lords has quit. There are now nearly 400 amendments. It is scheduled for 6 days parliamentary time in the Commons from this coming week. With another 2 possible the following week. Rather bravely AFTER the budget. Bored with May, CVs are being submitted for the position of Chancellor.

Interest Rates are looking likely to rise next week too with the message being 'this is as good as it gets'.

Another team of MPs has gone to the EU to see if they can check up on May and her team. This is unlikely to work as Nicola Sturgeon came across a brick wall.

And then there are the many many distractions from it all.

Catalonia has declared independence, which will consume EU time and energy.

There are rumours that the first prosecution in Trump Russia will be Monday (Guess who is currently in the US. Yep, the gurning one). And there are increasing muttering about Russia over here, with Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg being called to respond to a Select Committee investigation into Fake News.

And then there's the sleaze. Jared O'Mara seems to be the first in the queue. There are rumours more will be outed in several parties. Suggestions include May's right hand man Damien Green who was previously named in 2008. And the Tory Whips have a 'sleaze list' which suggests they know whats going on, but have done nothing.

This morning we have Gove making ill advised jokes about Weinstein in this political climate. With Neil Kinnock laughing heartily in response.

Anything that happens will be political to discredit opponents not because there is a change of attitude towards the treatment of women. We know this, because of who is leading the charge on this. The skeletons are being dusted off out the cupboard rather than exposed for the first time in dramatic fashion.

Things, could take a very unexpected turn against this background.

Don't bet against it.

Nadine Dorries @ nadinedorries
1 It would appear that the media and Westminster are in the grip of a collective hysteria and we have yet to see one substantive complaint.

LH Your post about Svetlana Stalin reminded me about that odd footnote in history.
I remember reading about this at the time and finding it very odd - there was surprisingly little fuss / gloating in the media, or explanation of how this happened, or was allowed

BigChocFrenzy · 31/10/2017 09:01

Boris has a horrendous reputation, including at least one sorry episode which makes me astonished why Nadine Dorries (supposedly devout anti-abortionist) is such a fan

DD too apparently makes at least objectionable remarks when sozzled - didn't he say something to Diane Abbots

BigChocFrenzy · 31/10/2017 09:04

I'm also reminded of the end of the Major govt - powerlessness and continual sleaze stories

Tory Minister and MP accused of paying women to keep quiet

A Tory Minister and an MP have been accused of paying women to be silent in a so-called 'dirty dossier' being shared by party staff.

The Minister is said to have asked a woman to sign a non disclosure agreement (NDA) and the MP is alleged to have "paid a female to keep quiet".

Brexit Riddle:

What's the difference between Brexit and a lightbulb ?

Answer: you can unscrew a lightbulb

LurkingHusband · 31/10/2017 09:07

I bet there's a lot of illegal encryption going on around Westminster right now.

ColgafromtheRiver · 31/10/2017 09:08

Would be great to know if the 'dirty dossier' mainly lists remainers or leavers.

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2017 09:09

Owen Jones @ owenjones84
The Michael Fallon Sun story isn’t even on the leaked spreadsheet. Now why would this Tory paper splash with the least extreme allegation?
I’ve read the uncensored spreadsheet of allegations concerning Tory MPs and it is deeply disturbing.

Hmm.

One idly wonders what the Soviets had on the US to prevent such gloating ? As the Gary Powers/U2 incident showed, the USSR was actually a dab hand and manipulating the media and US administrations.

LurkingHusband · 31/10/2017 09:10

Should be 48%/52% Smile

Peregrina · 31/10/2017 09:13

I hardly think it matters if those Tories on the list were once Remainers. Once they threw in their lot behind May and went along happily with her hard Brexit, as May herself, they became Leavers.

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2017 09:14

Its quite some thing that so many journalists look to have seen the list yet its not public yet.

Obviously there is the legal fear of doing so which is why it hasn't been published.

BUT

Its now looking like so many people have seen it, I find it difficult to believe it won't be leaked on social media very shortly. To my mind, its just a matter of time now.

Svetlana suffered a lot and married foreigners if I remember rightly. It was certainly in the Eastern European press. Red princes and princesses always had privileges, but also carried more risk - think how Stalin would not ransom his own son from the Nazis.

I have to agree on the targetedness of the abuse revelations. I have just seen the Daily Mail: everyone knew about Kevin Spacey and according to DM he was an abuser because he is a liberal darling. And look who his friends are. Clinton, Obama. Wink wink.

woman11017 · 31/10/2017 09:17

Wasn't there rumour that Boris is a womaniser and sleaze ball
One has to wonder, if anything is happening in 'plain sight' here, again. Hmm 'nasty piece of work'. I do wonder what Eddie Mair was referring to.

ElenaGreco123 · 31/10/2017 09:18

What about Steve Bannon or Sean Hannity or Trump? I'd like to see the statements given by their ex-wives on the front pages of the DM.

Looks to me like a reportable crime. BigChoc

Labour MPs brand David Davis 'sexist' and 'disgusting' following leaked texts about Diane Abbott

I'm not blind' jibe made in a series of texts following claims he tried to kiss Ms Abbott

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/mps-david-davis-sexist-texts-leaked-diane-abbott-a7576516.html

Ms Abbott, who became the UK’s first black female MP in the 1980s, told Mr Davis to “fuck off” following the Commons vote last week after he was reported to have made a light-hearted attempt to embrace her

One white man's light hearted attempt to embrace, is another lawyer's actual bodily harm prosecution.

Cailleach1 · 31/10/2017 09:37

I always presumed the 'nasty piece of work' included the Darius Guppy allegation wrt Boris.

In my humble opinion, I think he is just one nasty git who dressed up his poison in the faux bumbling act which he passes as humour. You don't have a sense of humour if you take exception to his poison darts. I won't call him a snide, lying b*stard. Although he did lose two jobs because of his lying.

LurkingHusband · 31/10/2017 09:39

Who remembers Cecil Parkinson, and how he gagged the press ?

Cailleach1 · 31/10/2017 09:43

Just saying to OH that I'm sure all the Con's disgusted at Jared O'Mara will now similarly be disgusted at their own colleagues. O'Mara was suspended. He did lay it out in print. Will the others be suspended if what they did was more serious?

So one MP paid money and got the person to sign a non disclosure agreement. If it was an assault or similar crime, albeit sexual, can a non disclosure have any legitimacy?

Cailleach1 · 31/10/2017 09:46

Oh yes. Sara Keyes was treated so shabbily. His wife was moneyed, I seem to remember. Those guys were so sleazy.

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2017 09:54

If it was an assault or similar crime, albeit sexual, can a non disclosure have any legitimacy?

Its an admission of guilt and the action of offering money could be classed as bribery.
