THE BREXIT FALLOUT OUT CONTINUES - THREAD EIGHT!

--------------------

Each of the parties seem to have a taken a very different style to their leadership contests.

The Tory party have been well documented as doing in the classic style of Hamlet. After the entire Conservative Party have spent two weeks stabbing each in the back and front, May steps forward to take the crown for herself.

But what about the others?

The UKIP leadership contest seems to be in comedy style of Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. In a strange turn of events, that no one predicted and seem quite absurd, they seem to be changing their rules so their new leader must have been a member for 5 years. The punchline is this rules just about everyone out, apart from Neil Hamilton and Steven Woolfe. As BigChocFrenzy points out, we are expecting Arron Banks to hand out the brown envelopes. We are just waiting for the poorly thought out, and badly booked racist band to turn up and make everyone cringe in horror and distract everyone from UKIP's candidates and their manifestos in the process.

Meanwhile Labour Party decide to do what they thought was Star Wars Panto. After spending a week going “She’s Standing”, “Oh No She’s Not” Angela Eagle is declared the Empire Strikes Back candidate by Diane Abbot. Well if she’s the rebel leader, then who is Darth Vader and the Emperor?

Unfortunately, you’d be forgiven for thinking the performance is starting to look more and more like a re-enactment of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, by the minute:

A battle of wills between two forces locked together in a room with ultimately different and opposing self-interests. This is only resolved when the new leader to the dynamic who sought to upset the institution, and give the others their freedom, is lobotomised and subsequently killed in an act of mercy. His murderer manages to escape the prison to the cheers of those still stuck inside.

The Greens of course are a foreign language film, no one has heard of and no one is really that interested in watching.

The Lib Dems are merely sat in the audience. With Tim Farron heckling.

But where is Gandalf? Sad

--------------------

At least some sanity has returned and we now have some leaders. May can now get stuck into the job of handing the nightmare that is Brexit whilst making herself at home at Number 10. Rumours are circulating that it’s been left a bit of a pigsty.

We will follow May, on her new adventures to foreign lands to persuade Merkel and Juncker to hand over a mythical unicorn to the UK. Meanwhile will we continue our own hunt for the opposition, whilst we all consult our dictionaries for the meaning of the word ‘Brexit’ in bafflement in the wake of ‘Brexit means Brexit’.

--------------------

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

Jo Maugham QC ‏@JolyonMaugham
Leadership voting: nothing is yet set in stone. Wonder who the independent scrutineer is?

Attached to copy of section of Labour rules which says:
iv. The timetable for the election, including any freeze date, and the procedures for agreeing the list of those eligible to vote must be approved by the Independent Scrutineer.

Why is AE doing a speech today of all days?!?!

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:26

Today and likely tomorrow is going to be all TM and her new cabinet. There's really no point in any speeches from AE.

DoinItFine · 13/07/2016 09:27

At least Angela Eagle has been trying to do something and is prepared to do it publicly.

I find the constant bitching at her every move quite depressing.

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:30

Doin Her timing is bad though. Who is advising her? If she wants to win, she needs to play it smarter than that. And pushing that people should vote for her because Labour needs to stump up a woman leader is not a good tactic.

OneArt · 13/07/2016 09:31

GingerIvy No, I don't think that is true. Italy's economy is struggling anyway, unrelated to Brexit.

This article quotes the Italian prime minister as saying that all the EU countries are likely to be adversely affected by Brexit, but the UK will suffer the most. Personally I'd agree with that analysis.

OneArt · 13/07/2016 09:33

That's speaking in economic terms only.

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:33

OneArt I'll look at that article. The one I saw seemed to say it was directly related to Brexit, which is why I asked how that was possible or if it was true. So much information flying about, it's hard to know what's true.

A couple articles in the last day have stated that DC was unhappy at leaving office before September as he was hoping after Brexit to end on a more positive note, but wasn't given the chance due to TM coming in.

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:35

tiggy that makes sense

I also note that Mark Carney seems to be in people's sights now. He seemed one of the few voices of reason immediately after Brexit. What's up with this?

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:38

John McDonnell on tv saying there will be no Labour split. People/MPs will back whoever wins, even if it's JC.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/07/2016 09:39

Ginger Brexit caused huge upheaval around the world - $2 trillion lost from the stockmarkets within a few days.
The shock waves rippled outwards and hurt some institutions that were already vulnerable, in countries around the world. However, EU countries were particularly hit of course.
The banks in Italy had structural issues that were highlighted by the shock and had to be rescued.

This is another reason why EU countries may be unwilling, or even unable, to break the rules and give the UK a Brexit deal with unicorns:

The UK acted totally without thought / care about what its action would do to others.
It is enough to annoy the EU and make them some think they would be safer keeping the UK at arms length.
Enough to make some of them close ranks against the UK
It's nowhere near enough damage to cause the breakup of the EU that the kipperati are raving about.

TheBathroomSink · 13/07/2016 09:39

As Italy's banks are probably going to fail the ecb stress test this summer, it might be in the Italian government's interest to have an explanation ready to go.

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2016 09:39

I want Angela Eagle to do something.

But its utterly pointless to do it on a day that she'll get completely drowned out. All it does is show a lack of judgement and makes her look stupid.

I actually don't want her to do that. I want her to at least look like she's a half credible candidate and attract some support from bewildered Labour supporters who have to choose which candidate to back now.

Italy's banks were not in a good state, with 18% of loans looking shaking already (I was paying attention Mr Carney). Italy is one of our biggest import partners (we import much more from Italy than we export to them) - more so than any other EU country bar Ireland which obviously has a slightly different status and relationship to us. They are effectively the country in Europe that is 'most exposed' to Brexit (as Ireland will almost certainly have a bilateral exception made for it somehow). They need the UK.

Maccy John is deluded. I will not support Corbyn or his cronies ever

OneArt · 13/07/2016 09:44

Tim Martin (chairman of JD Wetherspoon) was a massive Leave supporter both verbally and financially, so it's not surprising that he is slagging off Mark Carney.

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:44

Labour has 2 "unity candidates" to divide the party. Hmm

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:45

OneArt ah, okay. I am watching all the players here, but the list is getting extensive now, and it's getting hard to keep track of them all.

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2016 09:45

also note that Mark Carney seems to be in people's sights now. He seemed one of the few voices of reason immediately after Brexit. What's up with this?

Carney is not their puppet.

He is being labelled as 'influenced by Remain' by Brexiteers.

Whether he was influenced or was neutral and just doing his job, has annoyed them. They want someone they can influence.

Personally I think Carney is in the neutral camp and has a backbone and is prepared to stand up to them. This is what they don't like. It won't stop them trying to get rid of him. They are fools to try to. He's got things under control and has the trust of the markets.

I hope they fail, but I'm worried.

DoinItFine · 13/07/2016 09:45

Angela Eagle has only ever been spoken about on this thread as a useless halfwit.

Even though she was the only person brave enough to out her head above the parapet.

nauticant · 13/07/2016 09:48

I also note that Mark Carney seems to be in people's sights now. He seemed one of the few voices of reason immediately after Brexit. What's up with this?

It's a style of politics/public discourse that fell badly out of fashion but is now all the rage again. Everyone is doing it.

You purge everyone who is a dissenting voice. It doesn't matter what they've been saying, you denounce them as wreckers and say that things would be fine if they hadn't caused all the trouble.

The trick is to keep a steady supply of scapegoats. Once you run out they come for you.

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 09:50

Red He seems neutral to me, that's why I wondered if I'd missed something as suddenly it seems people are going after him.

Doin She's not really helping herself. She hemmed and hawed repeatedly about challenging. She should have done so immediately and would likely have garnered more respect. (and wouldn't have had her challenge ignored by press for AL's press meeting) She's not made her stand on issues clear at all. Now she's scheduled a speech on the day the new PM is taking office/expected to announce her cabinet. Not great planning.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/07/2016 09:53

The Weatherspoons' boss is a diehard Brexiter unicorn believer, so naturally blames those inconvenient experts who warned about this. This is his "logic" :

" ... the above individuals and organisations are either dishonest, or they have a poor understanding of economics, since democracy and prosperity are closely linked, and the EU is clearly undemocratic.
By voting to restore democracy in the UK, I believe the UK’s economic prospects will improve"

That's about as fact-based as blaming hurricanes on homosexuality - true believers cite anything to support their worldview.
