THE BREXIT FALLOUT OUT CONTINUES - THREAD EIGHT!

--------------------

Each of the parties seem to have a taken a very different style to their leadership contests.

The Tory party have been well documented as doing in the classic style of Hamlet. After the entire Conservative Party have spent two weeks stabbing each in the back and front, May steps forward to take the crown for herself.

But what about the others?

The UKIP leadership contest seems to be in comedy style of Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. In a strange turn of events, that no one predicted and seem quite absurd, they seem to be changing their rules so their new leader must have been a member for 5 years. The punchline is this rules just about everyone out, apart from Neil Hamilton and Steven Woolfe. As BigChocFrenzy points out, we are expecting Arron Banks to hand out the brown envelopes. We are just waiting for the poorly thought out, and badly booked racist band to turn up and make everyone cringe in horror and distract everyone from UKIP's candidates and their manifestos in the process.

Meanwhile Labour Party decide to do what they thought was Star Wars Panto. After spending a week going “She’s Standing”, “Oh No She’s Not” Angela Eagle is declared the Empire Strikes Back candidate by Diane Abbot. Well if she’s the rebel leader, then who is Darth Vader and the Emperor?

Unfortunately, you’d be forgiven for thinking the performance is starting to look more and more like a re-enactment of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, by the minute:

A battle of wills between two forces locked together in a room with ultimately different and opposing self-interests. This is only resolved when the new leader to the dynamic who sought to upset the institution, and give the others their freedom, is lobotomised and subsequently killed in an act of mercy. His murderer manages to escape the prison to the cheers of those still stuck inside.

The Greens of course are a foreign language film, no one has heard of and no one is really that interested in watching.

The Lib Dems are merely sat in the audience. With Tim Farron heckling.

But where is Gandalf? Sad

--------------------

At least some sanity has returned and we now have some leaders. May can now get stuck into the job of handing the nightmare that is Brexit whilst making herself at home at Number 10. Rumours are circulating that it’s been left a bit of a pigsty.

We will follow May, on her new adventures to foreign lands to persuade Merkel and Juncker to hand over a mythical unicorn to the UK. Meanwhile will we continue our own hunt for the opposition, whilst we all consult our dictionaries for the meaning of the word ‘Brexit’ in bafflement in the wake of ‘Brexit means Brexit’.

--------------------

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

Deselection dosn't stop them being MP's It stops them being Labour MP's
But who will they represent? Who will have voted for them? Sorry if I misunderstand how it works (long time since I was a party member).

Floisme · 13/07/2016 08:02

Ah right, thanks tiggy I'm realising I'm very out of touch.

Showmethewaytogohome · 13/07/2016 08:05

Technically they can represent who they want or be independent. They still represent their electorate as all constituents can contact them for representation etc. However, such an en masse change to a new party may trigger a GE as it is unprecedented I believe

The ideal however would be that they create a new party, get Jezza out of the labour party or join say the Lib Dems (but then they can not change the leader etc)

Tiggy I think the point of unity has now passed. If Jezza is re elected the party will split (which is highly possible)

I think the Union leaders should start looking at their own positions quickly. This could split some of the unions too - Jezza is finishing off Thatchers life work - well done Jezza

DoinItFine · 13/07/2016 08:09

At least we can put the idea that Jeremy Corbyn is principled to bed forever.

A man who would do this to the main opposition party at a time like this is a bad man.

Showmethewaytogohome · 13/07/2016 08:14

Doinit

If I wrote what I thought of him the world would run out of swear words. He is Thatchers bastard son as far as I am concerned

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2016 08:21

Labour MP Alison McGovern joins BBC Breakfast. Shadow chancellor John McDonnell had apparently not wanted to appear with her, saying that the party "fighting on screen... is not what we're about".

"I know I will get abuse even for doing this interview," Ms McGovern claims. She wants a change of leadership to ensure a Labour government, saying she saw too many friends and family "suffer under a Tory government" in the 1980s and 1990s.

He describes the incident in which Angela Eagle's constituency office window was broken as "scandalous" and condemns "any form of abuse... in the name of Jeremy Corbyn" - adding that he and the Labour leader have "had death threats".

He continues: "The tragedy of Jo Cox should have taught people a lesson." He tells members: "If there's any form of abuse... they're out."

Out of what exactly? Labour? Momentum? How does he intend to police this? Pandora's box has been opened...

Owen Smith says shadow chancellor John McDonnell is "part of the problem" and might be willing to split the Labour Party.

Mr Smith claims he spoke to Mr McDonnell and warned of a split. "He shrugged his shoulders and said: 'if that's what it takes'," Mr Smith tells Today.

The former shadow work and pensions secretary insists he was not part of "any coup or plot" against Jeremy Corbyn, blaming it on a small group "on the right".

"I can heal our party," he declares.

Well that's sounding massively helpful Hmm. The left of the party is crap and the right of the party is crap.

BakewellSliceAgain · 13/07/2016 08:27

I hated the way JC when asked about the damage to Eagle's constituency office came back with the - well I have had death threats- line. Badly handled.

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 08:27

If they all moved to LD, then what? I understand they'd stay MPs, but at the next GE would we then have tons of Momentum running under Labour clothing in another attempt to take back the opposition ? Would it just postpone the problem? Or give them time to get a handle on it?

GingerIvy · 13/07/2016 08:28

I do agree that John McDonnell is seeming more and more like JC's handler and is pushing his own agenda. Any chance he's hoping to take over from JC and be leader?

Showmethewaytogohome · 13/07/2016 08:29

But he hasn't started an internal investigation or started checking the trolls against the momentum membership list has he. He doesn't give a toss. He is a thug

I am yet to have a response from momentum regarding the validation of their membership or governance structure.

TheNorthRemembers · 13/07/2016 08:29

Can someone remind me, please, why I would want these people in charge of anything? The Tories are looking more appealing by the minute.

Flo Labour party members are just a tiny fraction of the electorate even in the safe Labour seat where I live, so of course MPS represent all their constituents. You would hope.

Showmethewaytogohome · 13/07/2016 08:34

Ginger - the thing about momentum is they do not understand the political structure and how the wheels work etc. They also will not convert to campaigners/boots on the ground which is what is needed to slog the election etc. There is no way most moderates at the CLP would campaign for a fervent Momentum candidate - they would jump ship and or support the previous MP

So really ignoring the thuggery they have no life medium to long term - that is one of the saddest thing about all this.

Unicornsarelovely · 13/07/2016 08:34

I guess if they all moved up the lib dems their constituents and not the Labour Party would have to choose whether they wanted to keep a lib dem MP or change to a 'labour' MP put up by momentum to the extent that they can find people to stand.

It was Shaun Woodward wasn't it who crossed from the tories to labour and was given a safe seat by Blair? Or have I remembered it wrong?

Floisme · 13/07/2016 08:36

Thanks tiggy.

Floisme · 13/07/2016 08:37

And North.

TheNorthRemembers · 13/07/2016 08:38

Ginger They might have a problem with LD in the North. In our constituency it would be unimaginable for people not to vote for Labour. An unpopular candidate gets a 10 thousand majority.

JoinTheUnicorns · 13/07/2016 08:39

I am absolutely loving these threads, RedToothBrush. That being said, I'm wondering if voting for the Unicorn Party isn't my best bet at the next election...

Anyway, does anyone remember this list of Labour MPs, allegedly ranking them for loyalty to JC? www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/mar/23/labour-mps-hostile-corbyn-leaked-party-document

Angela Eagle was at the time listed as 'Neutral but not hostile'.

How times change.

Unicorn for the Libdems that would affect many areas would it bless em. But I don't think the labour party is a natural fit with the lib dems. They need to take the Local party level with them. hhhhhhmmmm not sure

thecatfromjapan · 13/07/2016 08:40

This morning, I am particularly annoyed about the fact that a significant amount of Corbyn's support has been bought at the expense of the Referendum result and providing a credible Opposition presence. All effort by him and his team has been devoted to building the image of St Jeremy, rather than anything else.

I keep wondering how much of his support would disappear if there was a public demonstration of his (invisible) policies and executive skills in action. Though, frankly, we're never going to get a chance to see that.
