So what do we think of Angela eagle?

Is she good news?

She seems to be another one who has come from nowhere to take advantage of this brexit catastrophe. Has she been helicoptered in by the blairite centre left? Does she know what she is doing? Do we think she will succeed at ousting Jeremy Corbyn?

I'm off to google her because I really don't know much about her yet...

Or would the members block this?

Until they get rid of the £3 issue imo it will be blocked.

You have people from all parties that never have and never will vote Labour voting.

Itinerary · 10/07/2016 09:46

I don't think Angela Eagle would be a great leader for Labour. Not sure who would be ATM though!

RedHareWithBlondeHair · 10/07/2016 11:18

I'm watching her on BBC Sunday politics and yes she sounds whiny and timid.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 10/07/2016 11:24

She comes across as a bit weary and defeated imo which isn't very inspiring.
I wonder if her constituency party will go ahead and deselect her?

derxa · 10/07/2016 12:11

She's truly ghastly.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 10/07/2016 12:12

No I don't think they will. If 'infultrated' CLPs start deselecting all over the place it will be the death of Labour.

derxa · 10/07/2016 12:12

She's a sacrificial lamb in the Blairite-orchestrated shenanigans An accurate summary.

herecomesthsun · 10/07/2016 12:14

I think she is extremely intelligent, and (like Corbyn) passionate about Labour being a force for good for the underprivileged. I think all that is very genuine. These are excellent qualities in a leader or a prime minister. She is very articulate and has a sense of humour and made this tell at Prime Minister's Questions.

It is very difficult for anyone - prob more so for a woman - in this position. Too human and willing to try and negotiate with Corbyn and she is accused of dithering. But at the same time she is being accused of back stabbing. I think she genuinely wants positive change and was genuinely distressed by the party's difficulties.

Meanwhile there are calls from everywhere for someone to give leadership and a clear voice. I think she is doing her best to stand up to the plate and good luck to her.

I would far rather have Angela Eagle as OM than either Theresa May or Andrea Leadsom.

Oh and the lesbian thing might well be seized on by the Fail but could be seen as very twenty first century as well - a lot of people are much less fazed by that these days.

herecomesthsun · 10/07/2016 12:15

PM not OM

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 10/07/2016 12:17

Blairite-orchestrated shenanigans

So the likes of Owen Smith, Jess Phillips Karl Turner and Lisa Nandy are Blairites then Hmm

They are absolutely no where near being 'Blairite' which now seems to be anyone who isn't a Corbyn supporters.

NotDavidTennant · 10/07/2016 12:21

Blairite = anyone who doesn't agree with St. Jeremy. Splitters!

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 12:32

I'm thinking the Party will split. There is no-one able to pull things together.

We simply do not live in a left-leaning country, and the left-sided of the split will be a protest organisation. The centreist will have a fair go and attract other social-democratic elements of other groups/parties. The taking of traditional Labour votes by UKIP and Tories in Brexit can't be ignored. Aaron Banks on Marr was a sort of warning.

fwiw I don't rate AE for all the reasons said. And yes, I'm inclined to believe that JC is willing to split the party on his failure to have support of the PLP.

applecatchers36 · 10/07/2016 12:50

It is so disappointing and uninspiring, neither 'saint JC' or EA seem like a potential strong, unifying leader for Labour. I want to vote labour but JC seems like a cult in which you can't criticise him. Am sure he is a decent , principled man but he is not going to win elections, just can't see he him attracting, floating voters or the centre ground.

It feels like labour could split, wish JC would just stand down. Where are other candidates? David Milliband where are you? Dan Jarvis? Even Yvette Cooper .. Please we need an alternative who can unite the party and win elections otherwise we are going to have years of a right wing Tory UKIP government....

BlunderWomansCat · 10/07/2016 12:52

I like her, she comes across as empathic, a rare thing in politics.

Maz2444466 · 10/07/2016 13:07

applecatchers36 I completely agree. I actually really liked David Milliband and think if he had won the Labour leadership contest Labour may well have won the last general election. He's now the CEO of the IRC where he oversees the agency’s humanitarian relief operations in more than 40 war-affected countries and its refugee resettlement so I'm not sure if he'll be returning to politics which is a real shame.

I like Gisella Stuart but I know with her being a strong Leave supporter she may not bring about the unity the Labour Party needs....I also think Chukka Umunna comes across well but apparently he was going to stand for the contest last time but decided not to - not sure why. We definitely need some options and soon!

megletthesecond · 10/07/2016 13:10

Worse leadership skills than Corbyn. Whoever has told her should lead is clearly stitching her up.

What did Dead Ringers call her on radio 4 yesterday, a timid badger.

GraceGrape · 10/07/2016 13:15

Apparently David Miliband is in for a plum role aiding his pal Hilary if she wins so is unlikely to be returning to these shores. Unless there's a Trump victory of course...

nellodee · 10/07/2016 18:26

This is from the Guardian comments:
Angela Eagle’s voting record:
For:
• The invasion of Iraq
• Airstrikes on Syria
• Airstrikes on Iraq
• Increase in University Tuition Fees
• Introduction of ID cards
• Stricter asylum laws
• Detention without charge for 90 days
• Heathrow expansion
• Retention of Trident nuclear weapons
Against:
• Investigation into Iraq War
Abstained:
• Workforce (forcing jobseekers to do unpaid work)
• Tory Welfare Bill with £12bn of cuts to public services
Oh, and some more. She also voted AGAINST tighter regulation on fracking, AGAINST greater parliamentary transparency, and FOR mass retention of communications data.

Then this article makes extremely interesting reading:

wire.novaramedia.com/2016/07/how-angela-eagle-got-to-be-mp-for-wallasey/

And a quote from the article:
"Under the rules of the Labour party, if more than 50% of those who vote in a parliamentary selection return blank ballot papers the selection must start from scratch with new nominations. Contrary to party rules, no independent scrutineer was allowed into the Wallasey count held at the regional office in Warrington. When pressed, Eileen Murfin [Labour party regional organiser] admitted that the officials had not bothered to count the blank votes, again in contravention of the rules. But sources leaked the total to the media, which reported that 163 blank papers had been returned by local members in protest at the exclusion of Lol Duffy. Only 57 votes had been cast for the ‘winning’ candidate, Angela Eagle. Under the party constitution the selection was null and void; but party officials glossed over this detail."

IPityThePontipines · 10/07/2016 20:13

That's a very selective reading of her record:

www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/10182/angela_eagle/wallasey

The attempts at smearing anyone who disagrees with JC as a Blairite are not going to fool many people.

She was parachuted in to Wallasey (not her fault)
But her CLP asked her not to support vote of no confidence in JC & she did (that is her fault)
She came 4th in the deputy leadership election last year
Her Angela4Leader website was set up before Benn was sacked
Her voting record is very dodgy

MangoMoon · 10/07/2016 22:54

She is beyond awful.

Destinysdaughter · 10/07/2016 23:05

What's the point of a Labour Party if they support policies like this FFS?

Might as well have a real Tory and be done with it.

Tingitangi · 10/07/2016 23:10

Seems very two-faced.
Also looks bloody knackered and stressed all the time. Not sure how she'd cope as leader.

ImperialBlether · 10/07/2016 23:16

She was parachuted in to Wallasey (not her fault)

What on earth does that mean?
