"So many people willing to desert their country, disgusting."
Yuck Envy what a nationalistic comment. Bleurgh.

I find Kummerspecks comments funny. Her nn indicates she has German connection, maybe she and family have dual nationality, so no worries for her. If Kummerspecks is a German immigrant it's a case of close the door behind me mentality, so self-centred.

He doesn't listen at all and his ideas are all from his crazy head. He isn't like the rest of us. He isn't even like the UK establishment types. If there actually were lizards lurking inside some people, he'd be the one. He is absolutely ruthless and focused only on what he wants. Please don't let him have any power. He's going to want to know who I am, now. I wish I could hide.

I'm entitled to a passport of another EU country so will apply. I want to stay living and working in the EU; I don't want to live in a country that clings Norma Desmond-like to its past at the expense of its future.

Although correct, I do not like the word immigrant. EU citizens came here lawfully and did not need any papers until the referendum. Overnight, anybody born across the Channel has been renamed immigrant soon to become 'overseas person'..

I voted leave based on my own beliefs, not to endorse the shower of shite the leave campaign was pushing and I don't respect any of them (understatement of the year!).

I'm a socialist and wouldn't have wanted the conservatives in at all but accept democracy despite things not going my way. I wouldn't leave my country based on politics.

Fingers crossed Theresa May gets in.

Despite voting leave, I'm pro-free trade agreement and the compromises that'll require. I'd like a pro Europe person at the helm to give us the best chance of achieving my ideals.

Didn't someone say on another thread that whoever takes this job on will find that it's a poisoned chalice, and they'll have to resign soon after invoking Article 50?

Gove won't become PM ,he's too busy learning to play the ukulele.

How can anyone in their right mind vote for Gove?
He's just spent the last 5 years telling us all how bad he'd be!

I think whoever get in next will have a short and stressful stint there.

Yes we've got a majority leave vote but you can't please all leavers in the detail of leaving.

If you push for a free trade agreement you piss off those who want to control our borders and regain our sovereignty. If you push to regain sovereignty and control of immigration you'll piss off the quieter but large majority of people that don't want this. Then there's all variables in between.

Anybody but Gove. He seems hell-bent on removing us from the single market and single handedly destroying our financial services all for what?

I'm thinking of leaving the planet.
It'll be the only safe place.

He terrifies me - obsessive ideologue with a messiah complex. All that guff in the speech about how he did everything he could to avoid running - how about just not running?!

To me it's a choice of (4?) evils.

I've never voted Tory in my life and would never wish for a Conservative government. However, I've accepted that we need to establish some continuity for the next few years and so need a PM (albeit ConservativeSad ) with a strong set of skills and experience to see us through Brexit. Whether I like them personally or not is irrelevant to me at the moment - and I don't anyway.

Overall I think TM gave the best impression - but I don't entirely trust her not to renege on the result of the referendum, whereas MG won't (IMO)

Not much of a choice really.

just caught up on Gove's speech this morning - he has pledged to end free movement, and he didn't reply when a journalist asked him if current EU citizens would have to leave the UK.

so I guess the more appropriate question is, will I have to leave the UK if Gove is made PM?

Thankfully I doubt he'll win, but that speech of his was wholly disingenuous - populist and heartfelt on the surface, but bloody scary if you dig down a bit. Shudders

Exactly chalala Gove is a terrifying prospect for anyone EU. My DP is EU and at present only has two years residency. Things are so uncertain and I have a horrid knot in my stomach. People say, oh it's ok, you'll be ok, but unfortunately no one can say that. For me, I'd like to see something as close to the Norway model with free movement if only to safeguard my family.

Gove would be a nightmare for EU citizens who have made their life here. Practicalities such as pension and healthcare. An EU citizen who worked all their adult life in UK would not be able to stay?
This means they would not be eligible to a state pension or health care anywhere, not in UK nor in their homeland because they never contributed anything there. It sounds ridiculous but anything goes at the moment.
It starts feeling like the 1930's...

sorry to disrupt your sleep even more Tikes, but Theresa May's record as Home Secretary does not exactly inspire confidence either. She's implemented some truly awful policies.

Thanks Chalalala Sad. I was worried about that but must confess ignorance, May just seems overall a more pleasant 'type'. Can you give some examples .

Well, for example she started the policy that British citizens can only obtain visas for their non-British spouses if they (the Brit) make above a certain income. Meaning that she effectively separated a lot of low-earning families, or forced Brits to move abroad so they could live with their spouse.

She's also applied some new criteria for permanent settlement retroactively - meaning that people who had been working in the UK in the justified belief that they were accruing rights towards permanent residence were just told one day that actually the rules had changed and they would not be eligible after all.

Lots of examples of UKBA treating students absolutely appallingly - a recent one was this American PhD student who applied for a post-study visa, and only informed of the outcome when UKBA showed up at his doorstep to arrest and deport him.

It's not great.

Chamomille is the way to go! Brew

(before you go and stock up on chamomille though, I should say that I'm only very mildly worried - the status of current EU residents in the UK will be an EU priority in the Brexit negotiations, I'm sure. They'll have to keep us around if they want to keep their nice financial passport Smile)
