KH seems to have been all for Boris.

I think she's going to be disappointed with the deal that will be made. As will many leavers who don't want freedom of movement but do want freedom of trade.

askbasil genius!

  • where are we doctor? Why does everyone seem so .... Sad?
  • it's England in 2016! Harriet Jones never got born, and a terrible chain of events was set in place in 2010 .....
SlugArmyontheMarch · 30/06/2016 16:36

Wow, I have to say I am not a mad fan of Boris, I cant understand any reason why he is so liked or dis liked really.

But to hold it agaisnt him that he may harbor dreams of being PM. So what? Why does this make him such a bad person?

Helmetbymidnight · 30/06/2016 16:41

I reckon Boris will turn himself into the victim of big bad Gove-

WaitroseTrolley · 30/06/2016 16:44

slug it's more the 'becoming PM at the expense of the country' people have a problem with.

derxa · 30/06/2016 16:47

meritocracy will return When was there ever a meritocracy? The closest there was to a meritocracy in England was when the grammar school system existed. But that was done away with. Several Prime ministers emerged from the grammar school system including Heath, Wilson, Thatcher and Major. It's different in Scotland.

Tollergirl · 30/06/2016 16:49

Sorry Claig - just picking my chin up off the floor - you were joking when you said that Trump will become president and the world will be a "better" place - weren't you?

fakenamefornow · 30/06/2016 16:51

I think he should be forced to be PM so he can drowed in all the shit he's created.

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 16:56

I've just told DS it's like pass the parcel but no one wants the prize of being PM.

A new PM should be a uniter.

SlugArmyontheMarch · 30/06/2016 16:57

I see, but in front of me is a man who has just....turned down that chance?

BurnTheBlackSuit · 30/06/2016 16:59

Gove is not decent. He barely knows where his constituency is, let alone ever visiting it, and heaven for it he should actually ever live in it and not in Kensington.

He has never done anything for the people who elected him.

randomer · 30/06/2016 17:51

did anybody see that weird picture of Gove with his belt pulling up his kegs and his meat and 2 veg on show. ( sorry no link)

Elendon · 30/06/2016 17:57

Is it just me or does anyone else think that May, not a lover of human rights, sounds just like Patsy Stone?

honeysucklejasmine · 30/06/2016 17:58

Liam Fox was on the news this morning insisting there would be no need for a GE until 2020. Between that and most of them claiming we will retain free movement, and i would be very disappointed if I was a leave voter. Unelected officials and free movement?!

Gove would be an absolute disaster as PM. Education is still feeling the effects of his tenure, with a huge retainment crisis. He's only seen as any good in Justice because Grayling fucked it up so royally. All hes needed to do is just reverse everything and he appears competent.

Elendon · 30/06/2016 18:06

Did any of them mention Brexit or immigration?

Elendon · 30/06/2016 18:08

I suspect that a few conservatives will cross the floor.

Paris7 · 30/06/2016 18:16

Bugger Boris, the blond turd should be given to Damien Hurst, bottled nude with a magnifying glass over his doubtlessly tiney rude bit, and put on display in the Chamber of horrors.

Paris7 · 30/06/2016 18:28

Here we go gathering nuts in May....

I think a referendum is called for, a vote to abolish the Commons and turn it into a skating rink, an Aldi or a vintage high rise (privatised) car park. What other proposals for practical, money generating use?

temporaryusername · 30/06/2016 18:38

From what I have heard, and this may well be incorrect as it is all still emerging...

Boris woke up this morning intending to do his launch with the support of Gove. Sometime this morning Gove rang Lynton Crosby and told him he would not be supporting Boris but standing himself and publicly stating that he does not think Boris is up to the job. Lynton Crosby would have instantly passed this on to Boris and they probably scrambled to assess the state of his chances and who else was defecting, but realised he could not do it. Boris has been played. This is not part of a grand plan of his, or that is how it now seems. The people at the top of the party and those pulling the strings behind the scenes do not think Boris is up to the job. They have said so for years, before Brexit came into it. They won't change their minds. I don't think he will ever lead the party.

SnowBells · 30/06/2016 19:04

This was basically real-life MACBETH.

Sadly not written by Shakespeare, but by the Daily Mail.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/06/2016 19:36

Loved what hestletine said - that's gotta hurt!

Lweji · 30/06/2016 19:59

Even though Gove declared he was running, Boris did have a moral obligation to be put to scrutiny by his own party. We have to wonder if he did want to run and was stabbed on the back, or actually relieved others stepped up. Possibly because he took so long to step forward.

TattyCat · 30/06/2016 20:02

Tosh. Heseltine said "this wouldn't have happened without him". Of course it would! The referendum was promised by Cameron and he set it in motion. Somebody was going to campaign for 'Leave' and whoever that was, more than likely would have gained the same result!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2016 20:03

I suspect that a few conservatives will cross the floor.
to where though? Labour is in as bad a state as they are.

claig · 30/06/2016 20:08

Boris's supporter MPs were on TV. They had no clue that Boris would not stand. Kwasi Kwateng was gutted and has switched his support to Theresa May.

Boris is probably gutted, but he understands how it works. If the real power doesn't back you and cuts the puppet strings, then you have to suck it up and back down. Boris will get over it, he has read enough Julius Caesar etc to know how it really works.

A lot of these MPs don't understand how it really works, they are blaming Gove, but the real power, represented by Dacre and Murdoch, urged Gove to stand because they don't trust Boris. If Boris thought he stood a chance, he would not have withdrawn. Boris knows that the power does not back him so he had no option but to withdraw rather than stand and lose like Liam Fox or Andrea Leadsom etc
