Brexit

Wales to seek independence and join the EU

SnowBells · 28/06/2016 08:38

So according to this article, Wales want to seek independence and join the EU.

This is despite them overwhelmingly voting for LEAVE.

So joining the EU and breaking away from England now seems preferable to Brexit.

Surely, if that happens, you can't let this referendum stand as is?!

Fontella that can be her secret weapon - bringing in the right-wing vote with merely her voice

That's true haha!! The subliminal powers of Leanne Wood's voice.

Maybe Wales, NI and Scotland should merge with Ireland to become the Celtic People's Republic? (no, I'm sure that will never happen!)

How about Federated United Celtic Kingdoms instead? Wink

"The proportion voting to leave in Wales was larger than in England "

That's not correct Tiggy Tape. Here are the results:

England: Remain 11,113,232 votes (46.4%), Leave 9,611,351 votes (53.6%)
Northern Ireland: Remain 408,744 votes (55.3%), Leave 330,783 votes (44.7%)
Scotland: Remain 1,661,191 votes (62%), Leave 1,018,322 votes (38%)
Wales: Remain 772,347 votes (47.5%), Leave 854,472 votes (52.5%)

Snowbell, I don't quite understand your assertion that if/when we leave the EU all funding for deprived area will stop. Why would that happen? Why would that be a lie? The leave campaign said they would continue to fund projects/area etc. It's our money anyway just went via the EU.
We won't be leaving for at least another 2 years if not longer so there is no need for the UK to fund these areas yet.

Only a fool would believe that. The truth is already out

No, Wales is a net beneficiary of the EU.

Parts of Wales voted to stay though ie Gwynedd which is predominantly Welsh speaking .

Oh, Corcory, you have been had. Shock

Wales was a net beneficiary.
The UK in aggregate was a net contributor to the EU, but people made the mistake of treating the calculation as a simple subtraction, i.e. how much do we pay the EU, how much do we get back.

But it's more like linear algebra (well, my DH just said it's more like nonlinear algebra - cheeky smartarse) and there are many different variables. Being in the EU creates a lot of jobs that may now have to be shifted elsewhere, like Vodafone. Some businesses are moving operations in the next few months even BEFORE Brexit happens, because businesses can't deal with uncertainty. There are European agencies that will need to move and research grants in science that are now being frozen. Fact.

When this all goes, we will less have money as we get less taxes (and will probably have more people unemployed), etc.

Wales will not see much money from Westminster. Definitely not on the scale of what the EU gave.

Snowbell - So the UK is a net contributor and Wales are net beneficiaries. What difference does that make? The leavers have said they will guarantee funding in Wales till 2020.
Vodafone say they will move their EU HQ. not their UK HQ. They don't actually employ all that many people in the UK and I suspect not a lot in their EU HQ. They have HQs all over the world. The amount we earn from taxes etc. and the fact that there may be a recession still doesn't negate the amount we would have had to earmark for the EU if we had had to stay in the EU so I can see no reason not to think that we would still have that money when we leave and can still fund the projects that were started by the EU and the science funding etc. and still have money to spare.
Gwen - Just because DC - the out going pre remain PM- said he couldn't 'guarantee ' welsh funding when asked at PM's questions doesn't mean the Welsh are not going to get the funding. This doesn't make me a 'fool' to think that the leaver's who won wouldn't honour their pledge to fund current EU projects till 2020.

Snow you do know that Plaid only have one fifth of the Senned seats, don't you?

So not at at all the same as the Scotland/SNP situation.

And not anywhere near a "Wales to seek independence" situation.

Just

Leanne Wood is not unattractive (although not my age range) which makes the voice more appealing.

Nicola Sturgeon I have a lot of respect for as a speaker, debater and an intelligent woman, even if I disagree with some of what she says.

The voice and appeal factor....... 'No Comment' Grin

Leanne Wood is a politician, her attractiveness has nothing to do with what's going on. She is not a TOWIE cast member.

Wales have seriously scored an own goal. I already know a few people who have said they have no interest in visiting Wales (or Cornwall) as a tourist destination as they are concerned about their apparent hostility to outsiders.

A promise to guarantee funding for for years? Oh well, the Welsh can relax. Four years is like close to forever.

Loving the notion that the Scottish first minister is powerful enough to charge wales' mind on brexit. Maybe we should get her phoning England too. Nah, on second thoughts, scratch that.

Do you live in Wales Corcory? Have you followed debates on how Wales is funded in the past?

"I already know a few people who have said they have no interest in visiting Wales (or Cornwall) as a tourist destination as they are concerned about their apparent hostility to outsiders."

Quite ironic if you're talking about English people, as this vote had nothing to do with that and, in fact, a small majority voted for even more English rule than before.
On the other hand, the most beautiful area in my opinion in Snowdonia, where the people voted to Remain.

Corcory I don't think the leave campaign were in a position to guarantee those kinds of figures.
