I think he should go - he shouldn't be negotiating something he doesn't believe in - put gove/boris in charge.

(remainer)

BeckerLleytonNever · 24/06/2016 17:06

I actually liked Boris' speech today, very eloquent, not smug or patronising as Im sure DC and Osbornes would have been had the vote gone the other way.

as for DC he moved out of number 10 ages ago to take up residency in Merkels arse.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 24/06/2016 17:26

I agree about Boris's speech Becker
Not bad at all in the circumstances.

BonerSibary · 24/06/2016 21:23

Look what you have done, it isn't the leavers who have caused this.

What do you mean by 'this'? Because in the context of the discussion we're having, it's difficult to come up with a permutation of 'this' that the Leavers didn't cause.

I don't blame him for going and his position was untenable anyway. On a purely practical level, he's been discredited and he doesn't want to go, so it's hard to see how he could do a decent job of negotiating us the best possible exit. There must've been a certain degree of satisfaction in leaving Boris to it as well. You want it, it's all yours, be careful what you wish for.

funnyperson · 24/06/2016 22:52

Yes I think Boris should take the consequences of his actions on the chin by leading the country through the mess he has helped tp generate.

Cameron did the right thing as his resignation speech tried to set a time line for article 50 for Brussels, first thing in the morning before the European Commission had its emergency meeting, buy the UK some time, and avoid the indignity of being asked to leave by a no confidence vote from his party.

Boris had a lot of fun being mayor of London but being PM of the country will be quite different. I bet he tries to side step the hard work and leave it to Gove, whose right wing anti immigration view is very scary

GiddyOnZackHunt · 24/06/2016 23:15

Fuck me funny the last clowns you want coping with the negotiations etc are those twats. They're wealthy enough to be totally insulated from the fuck ups they create.

BonerSibary · 25/06/2016 07:16

Although that would also be true for Cameron.

mamamea · 25/06/2016 07:39

"I hope Gove or Johnson get it as they are BOTH unelectable. ;o)"

You must be joking.

Johnson twice won London mayor, completely against demographics, he is just about the most electable person in the Conservative party.

He is a proven winner, two triumphs as Mayor, and now on the right side on Leave. As long as he isn't locked out of the Tory leadership election by MPs, he will be PM for the next decade.

BonerSibary · 25/06/2016 08:09

Johnson has a lot of charisma and people like him. He's very electable, the first time. But hasn't done anything so far to suggest he's going to be able to successfully get us out of this hole he helped dig. I think he'd win a general election if there were to be one soon, but I'm not sure about the next decade.

Hulababy · 25/06/2016 08:39

Of course the Leave voters created this!!

DC stood for remain.
The vote went to Leave.
How can someone who disagrees with the result lead the country through the changes??!

So now we have Leave - so leave supporters need to lead the country through the process.

Basic common sense.

Obviously having a referendum in the first place is a consideration. But had one not be called there'd be just as many people complaining about that too.

Never thought I'd see the day I was sad DC was resigning - but the alternatives are so bad I do.

Well done leave voters.
You did cause this.
At least stand behind your choices.

BungoWomble · 25/06/2016 12:46

The Tories created this. Cameron promised the referendum to grab power when it looked like the Tories would lose the last election and has been busy tearing open every social divide in the country. Perhaps now he begins to realise that it was never just a London power game and actions have consequences. Incompetent fool. Good riddance.

BonerSibary · 25/06/2016 13:15

The Tories could've offered a referendum a day for the entire term, but we wouldn't be leaving if it wasn't for the Leave voters having done what they did. Clearly Cameron made a stupid decision, played the game and lost, but it's impossible to do as NewLife was attempting to do and write a version of this where the people who have voted us into this are not responsible for what they did.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 25/06/2016 13:23

Yes about the stupid decision from DC Boner
Cameron, you were the captain of the ship and you sunk it.

BonerSibary · 25/06/2016 13:28

I think maybe the better analogy is that he allowed other people a free shot to sink it when he had the option of continuing sailing through troubled waters instead. And those people took it.

BungoWomble · 25/06/2016 13:36

How about he allowed them a free shot to sink it after casting the cannon, lining it up, loading it, and handing Boris the match and asking him to pass it on?

BonerSibary · 25/06/2016 14:00

Snort. And Boris did pass it on and is now surprised that things catch fire.

lazysummer · 25/06/2016 15:25

There were so many mistakes all along the way. Why didn't the parties get together and plan a co-ordinated approach? Cameron's timing for this referendum and misunderstanding of the national mood have led us into a nightmare. However, he followed his heart and beliefs and is so much better than the alternatives.
I have respect for his decision to resign; he had no choice.
However, I am convinced that Boris led Brexit only to get power for himself. He looked terrified on Friday morning; I don't think he expected the result (like a lot of Leave voters it appears). He certainly doesn't have the skills to steer us through these stormy waters.

BonerSibary · 25/06/2016 15:50

Oh, I don't think anyone believes Boris actually wants to leave the EU. He did his level best to say as little as possible about Europe throughout his career, didn't choose a side until the last possible minute and spent yesterday alternating between shitting himself and singing Europe's praises. He presumably was hoping for a close loss and the Eurosceptic vote in the leadership contest after Cameron went in 2020. It's going to be fascinating to see how he tries to salvage this one. Hopefully he's as clever as everyone says.

bojorojo · 25/06/2016 17:27

Boris has a very long history of changing his position on a whole range of topics including his position on the EU in recent weeks. He cannot be trusted to stick to anything unless it benefits his political aims. Gove is the same.

Although DC put the referendum in the manifesto, the EU has been a running sore in the Conservative Party for decades and although Mrs Thatcher negotiated improvements, EU disagreement was one of the drivers of her downfall. It was the same for Major and now Cameron. The Conservatives like to stick the knife into each other and we are now all going to take the consequences of their strife, Farage's bullying and discontent Labour voters supporting UKIP's position.

nuttymango · 26/06/2016 09:23

I hope it's Gove and not Johnson and that there is an election because I can't see many in education voting for Gove. I think putting him up for election is the best way of the Conservatives (what a misnomer!) losing the election.

BungoWomble · 26/06/2016 09:58

Boris Johnson changes his position... not half!
tompride.wordpress.com/2016/05/28/the-great-eu-debate-boris-johnson-vs-boris-johnson/

JoffreyBaratheon · 26/06/2016 15:07

Luckily I think Boris has shot his bolt with the tories behind the scenes, anyway.

So that's Slitherin's finest, Osborne and him out of the running.

BaboonBottom · 27/06/2016 09:33

I like Theresa May, she comes across as confident, researched, well measured, calm, knowledgable and weirdly for a politician, trustworthy.

She reminds me of Dame Judi Dench in Bond!

BungoWomble · 27/06/2016 11:43

I'm not a Tory fan but I am a fan of getting Britain working again, and I like the look of Theresa May too.
