Anyone else completely changed their opinion of friends/family over how they vote?

I've got a few 'remain' close( ish ) family members who I never want to see again such is my strength of feeling over this.
It's our version of the miners strike & they'll always be traitors to me.

OP posts:

I have no issue with which way any one votes, but I agree with everyone else on this thread that it's the way people express it that causes me to judge them.

I've unfollowed two friends in FB due to some shite posts stating that remain is the only moral choice, people voting to leave are thick, racist, shouldn't be allowed to vote etc.

I never thought of them as out of touch before, but their disdain for low paid people worried about their jobs and the sneering suggestion that the working class are stupid was really quite depressing.

Sorry for multiple posts!

mylovegoesdown · 23/06/2016 17:09

No. Because I respect other people's opinions on politics even if I don't agree with them.

And some people I know hold other opinions I don't agree with. That doesn't make up the entirety of their personality or existence though.

And I don't see at all why this is comparable to the miners strike.

Alfieisnoisy · 23/06/2016 17:15

I have gone up and down on this issue. All my family are voting Brexit as far as I know...I am the only one voting Remain. Same with some friends...about 50/50.

It won't affect how I see them though no matter what the result.

rookiemere · 23/06/2016 17:16

Yes it's a horrible feeling.

My DF ( who happens to be an immigrant himself) is spouting all sorts of racist nonsense and is in favour of Leave, DM seems to agree with him as they were talking about how poor Boris was being bullied on a debate the other evening Hmm.

They are also elderly and DF is unwell. I'm due to go and visit with DS on Saturday and I'm so hoping it's a Remain vote as I don't think I'll be able to bare the conversation if it's not.

Having said that I do believe there are pros and cons to either side, but it's just that my elderly parents have fixated on the lowest common denominator of the Leave campaign.

I may well not tell them that either way I've been so disgusted with the conservative parties ridiculous in fighting and flagrant disregard for the well being of the country, that I'm seriously thinking of voting Labour at the next election.

This referendum has changed things forever. Regardless of what the end result is.

GoodbyeBoleyn · 23/06/2016 17:21

Either vote is reasonable in my opinion and I haven't had any issues with close friends and family that suprised me.

However today at work some of the youngsters were crowing about voting leave and shouting goodbye and waving at the three Romanians that were there. Frankly I was disgusted at the level of xenophobia and lack of respect shown to co-workers and I have to say that I will never respect them.

Auti · 23/06/2016 17:22

I have not even discussed this with my family, their vote their choice.

I voted Leave.

FuzzyWizard · 23/06/2016 17:30

I'm voting remain. I can't imagine thinking of someone as a traitor because of their vote. I have some colleagues who are voting leave who I very much respect and have good reasons for doing so. I was really interested to discuss with them. I've also been saddened to find out that some other people I know are actually racists. Some people have also become really aggressive over this. I've seen some ridiculous bullshit from remainers too that makes them look like smug arseholes. I wish both sides had been more respectful... Talk of traitors is exactly the sort of nonsense I'm tired of.

squoosh · 23/06/2016 17:34

Wow OP, your family members will probably be cheering the fact that they're dead to you from this day forth. They might even have a street party.

rookiemere · 23/06/2016 17:39

I do wonder what all the non UK born residents make of it.

I know during the Scottish referendum as a non Scots person I felt very unwelcome and the country that has been a home for me for over 20 years, ceased to feel like one and we're planning to move to England to retire when the time comes.

ellesbellesxxx · 23/06/2016 17:46

I respect whatever people vote as I am proud that we all have the right to do so.
I am however shocked by some peoples racist and xenophobic comments re: leaving the EU. That I have found hard to stomach.

bkgirl · 23/06/2016 18:55

I was remain for months and changed to Brexit a few weeks ago. I totally agree with saving refugees and indeed I know immigration is on the whole good for any country(my family is full of people who emigrated) .
What I can't understand is how ANY economist can argue that unlimited immigration is financially sound for any country. It seems it's issuing a blank cheque, how can we provide enough social housing roads schools etc. I honestly don't get how we can maintain the NHS on the same basis. I also found out about the control of the commission and how we can't unelect them. Then to cap it all the euro army petrifies me. I read about the European Peoples party and how ambitious it was to expand Europe as far as the Middle East and as for Russia. I honestly am worried sick about a pushy EU led by corporate interests using any army to get it's way in other countries. It just seems like sheer lunacy and the only defence is "no they wouldn't do that" or "but we have a veto" or "the wine is nice." It's like thats a nasty idea, we don't like it so we wont believe it could happen. I really hope those people are right but somehow I don't think the history of Europe backs their hope.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 23/06/2016 19:54

Wrong thread bkgirl? Hmm

bkgirl · 23/06/2016 20:48

sorry yep I think it is :)

christinawilliams · 24/06/2016 10:57

I've been quite surprised by some people's views but I wouldn't say that I have changed my opinion about them - after all, everyone has their own views and feelings, I cant expect everyone to think the same way as me.

SonicSpotlight · 24/06/2016 10:59

My MIL voted out. It really hasn't changed my opinion of her Wink

MiracletoCome · 24/06/2016 15:31

I voted leave, I don't know how the rest of the family voted, it was their choice, same as people at work, some voted one way and some another, that is their choice.

BreakingDad77 · 24/06/2016 16:07

Voted remain and wife told me after saying she might not have time to vote, to then saying she was pressured by her mum and dad to vote out. Not happy at all, its bad enough their moaning about their DLA being cut after voting Tory and now this!

Want to talk to her about how this effects, the house, job prospects for our family but don't know how, without it turning into moaning.

Have colleagues who aren't going to be visiting relatives for a while.

concertplayer · 24/06/2016 17:06

A close friend recently spent time protesting against cuts in a local hospital yet in the Gen Election she said she voted Tory because we were
in so much debt and need to save! She has been to Europe once and the USA once and thinks she has travelled She is paranoid about migrants .
Tbh I just find her lack of coherant opinion BORING . Cannot understand how we can give power to folk who know very little Not seeing her anymore zzzzzzzzzzzzz
