I will accept it.

I can't remember which thread it was on, but I did make a reference to american cheese that was plainly a joke (as is American cheese, of course). Brexit wouldn't remove french cheese from the market, but it might make it a bit more expensive. But the type of consumer who buys quality french cheese is not, by and large, likely notice a small increase in cheese prices.

Chalalala · 20/06/2016 12:03

scaryteacher I wouldn't dream of criticizing British cheese, it's true that there are some excellent ones (although you have to look for them).

but we have some different, equally excellent ones in France. Some you can find here, but it'll cost you and arm and a leg, similar to what you're saying about British cheese in Belgium.

Chalalala · 20/06/2016 12:04

it's the other, less well-known Godwin law:

"As a Mumsnet referendum discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving British and continental cheeses approaches"

BishopBrennansArse · 20/06/2016 12:05

I don't have any choice but to stay.
If I had the money and there was a leave vote on Friday I'd get out of the country.

I will just get on with my life.

I know most Brexiters will not have voted that way on the grounds of immigration but plenty will do so for that very issue. I will feel very disappointed in those people who have such hatred for others.

Thankfully most people I know voting Leave are doing so for other reasons and immigration hasn't come into it.

I am a Remain voter ...feeling like an island in a sea of Leavers at the moment.

Have been absolutely sickened by some comments I have seen on social media. I might have to avoid that for at least a week until the smugness and hatred has settled.

I think we will Brexit ...can see the vote going that way.

Globetrotter100 · 20/06/2016 12:13

Cheesy Chalala Grin

and i raise you emmental and jarlsberg....it's a political minefield!

uniquehornsonly · 20/06/2016 12:19

Wow. Guess Frances' 75% tax and the legal requirement to pay for your own healthcare won't appeal to you then. Curious, which country would you be heading to next?

I don't understand your question. I've no problem being a high rate tax payer. My point was that I'm one of those immigrants who is a massive net contributor to the public purse (even taking DC into account), so the exchequer would consider me a loss to the UK in terms of finance. Y'know - I'm that special type of immigrant that nobody in the Leave campaign seems to mind being in the UK, unlike all the others.

I'd be happy to move to France for many reasons, and would also be happy to insure myself in their excellent healthcare system, but it's unlikely to be a contender in my line of work.

Nowhere's perfect, but a Leave vote will make many places in the EU much more attractive than the UK, so away we'll go.

FuckOffJeffrey · 20/06/2016 12:20

Similar to the inde ref last year to be honest. Have a moan with my nearest and dearest. Avoid social media due to gloating. Worry about the financial implications of it all. Feel sad about the prospect of being less likely to carry out future plans to go live in Germany (we were waiting until DD finishes school do to not being keen on the 3 tier schooling system over there).

BishopBrennansArse · 20/06/2016 12:31

Funniest brexiters I saw were the expats on the costa deal sol...

Patapouf · 20/06/2016 12:34

Look into claiming asylum on the continent Grin

Sob and despair of the British public and finally get around to applying for Irish citizenship. Sigh.

Battleborn · 20/06/2016 12:38

A lot of high earning tax payers threatening to leave the country in the event of a brexit.

It's almost like they think they are the only possible people who can do that high earning job. Pretty sure there will be plenty of highly educated people who won't flee the country and will be happy to take that job off your hands Grin

Or let me guess....you're special?

LemonRedwood · 20/06/2016 12:40

So quite a lot of people will go back to their European country of birth? Says it all really

What does it say? I am British with British parents but was born in another European country so am entitled to claim citizenship there too.

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 20/06/2016 12:41

I'll be fine. I'll vote to remain because, on balance, I think it's for the best. If we leave, I can see the value in shuffling the landscape of politics so that individuals feel closer to those who govern and I would hope that this might reduce political apathy.

However, there is a shitstorm brewing regardless. Because this has become largely a discourse of immigration and this referendum and the decisions made off the back of it, won't really touch that in any meaningful way. So either lots of people will be resentful that people didn't vote with them or angry that, despite a leave vote, that nothing really changed.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 20/06/2016 12:44

Shrug, cry a bit, sit back and watch the subsequent shitstorm happen.

BishopBrennansArse · 20/06/2016 12:45

There's going to be a shitstorm either way, though...

MrsBlackthorn · 20/06/2016 12:53

Pretty sure there will be plenty of highly educated people who won't flee the country and will be happy to take that job off your hands

...if those jobs still exist in the UK. My company is likely to move some operations to either Ireland or Germany in the event of Brexit. So there will be fewer jobs to be had here. DH and I have discussed and agreed we'll look at going with them if possible as there will be fewer jobs in the UK and more people going for them.

We might also look at going to Asia or Australia.

Ifyoubuildit · 20/06/2016 12:59

Start looking for a new job Sad

Jeanniejampots80 · 20/06/2016 13:48

At work here in Ireland, discussing ref with English colleague over lunch who was despairing about her aunt and uncle who are English and live in Spain. They are voting out because " we need to keep those foreigners in their own country where they belong"....... Confused. She tried explaining that technically both her and them fit into the same category " don't be silly dear we are English, not foreign"....... she gave up and hung up the phone :)

BishopBrennansArse · 20/06/2016 14:00

Jeannie that's exactly the mindset of the expats in the costas I saw on itv news a while back.

Margrethe · 20/06/2016 14:19

Some of the comments about flouncing out/being driven out of the UK in the event of Brexit remind me a little of when you are young and you leave a "real" job for the first time.

You are a bit fed up; feeling a bit unappreciated; someone else comes along and offers you a better job with a bit more money; off you go. You think they will be sorry; they will see how hard you've worked; how much you have contributed; perhaps they will even have a hard time without you! But of course, life goes on without you. Someone steps into your shoes and does the job just fine. The company somehow soldiers on.

Jeanniejampots80 · 20/06/2016 14:35

BishopBrennan I think it would be hilarious if it wasn't so serious. While I know the term racist has been thrown about a lot those expats certainly fit the "we are better then those people" bill. Their niece was disgusted.

Margrethe : thats certainly the impression I get here talking to people in Ireland, and with other EU colleagues. Kinda of an "off you go dear and have your tantrum, we will be just fine without you, even if you don't want to believe it"

BishopBrennansArse · 20/06/2016 15:02

It's hilarious because it is so serious, you either laugh or cry!

Millyonthefloss2 · 20/06/2016 15:41

If you can't decide, you could ask the magic eight ball.

As to the undecided people who say they may vote remain because the team is 'nicer', what about John Timpson the philanthropic cobbler. Or these three politicians just for starters: Frank Field (BHS enquiry and Labour) Maria Caulfield (nurse and Tory) and Jenny Jones (Green Party).

BishopBrennansArse · 20/06/2016 15:50

Heh.
I'm remain but my thoughts in Cameron aren't nice.
