Brexit

Is anyone else getting quite tired of being called a racist?

I know it can't just be me.

It doesn't matter what carefully thought out reasons a brexiter has for wanting to leave (I've seen some very articulate and reasoned ones on mn itself) we are still all getting lumped into a stereotypical group of closet racist idiots.

And Lord forbid any of those reasons might just involve any concern over levels of eu migration!

I've been told that I'm essentially imagining the three week waiting list for my GP or that this is nothing to do with eu migration. If I say I know it is because of the names being called out I become the equivalent of Enoch Powell.

The same goes for a certain local estate very much being a no go area, especially for young girls. After braving this street once with my children and being spat on and shouted at by a group of very hostile Romanian men/boys I've been told I imagined it.

When I had my son a few week ago my I was the only English speaking person in my ward. A polish man was shouting and being very aggressive to staff as they were struggling to find an interpreter.

I absolutely know that not every migrant is aggressive and that they should build more schools and go surgeries but I believe I'm right to be concerned about a high number of migrants who are not intergrating with their local community and the unsustainable strain on services.

I'm sick of being told that my experiences don't matter. That to even mention that this is what life is like in our town means I am a racist or little englander.

Are you speaking of national or local figures, Devilish?

National birth rate figures - but reflects what has been happening locally. When ds2 was looking at secondary I was told it was 'fine this year because it's a low birth rate year' - never checked the figures until today but it was (the lowest in the last decade).

allthingsred · 20/06/2016 14:07

I don't think you sound racist.
& actually in my opinion the term 'racist ' is banded about to easily by people nowadays,
You sound like you have concerns around your local area but I didn't read any ...hate in your post.
A racist is someone who hates a person/group of people for a difference in skin colour. Someone who thinks they are better than others due to their skin colour.
I didn't read any of that in your post & actually when I read through people's arguments for leaving that involves Immigration I don't read hate. I see fear, a lot of real fear.
I reckon if we go out & instead of spending all our money on Eu we can build more schools hospital & houses. Then, the more the merrier.
To be fair though. The remain camp are quite lazy & completely unfair banding everyone who is even contemplating leaving a racist.

allthingsred · 20/06/2016 14:09

Oh & btw I'm a mixed race woman. & have suffered racism 1st hand.
There is a difference between racism & fear

Mooingcow · 20/06/2016 17:49

There are real human beings with brains that would actually vote leave (the voting choice of racists)

And there we are.

My DH and I are on completely different sides in this referendum.

We have had civilised debates, include he family and our friends and manage to hold opposing views without ONCE lowering ourselves to the level of playground name-calling, bigotry, ignorance and intolerance epitomised by this silly statement.

No wonder the far right are on the rise in the face of of this intractable stupidity.

Paniniswapx3 · 20/06/2016 17:55

Totally agree Mooing - my DH & I are on different sides too & no name calling & certainly no racist undertones for either of us.

NameChanger22 · 20/06/2016 19:34

I've heard it all now! There are real human beings with brains that would actually vote leave (the voting choice of racists) to avoid the racists getting into power? Pull the other one.

That was what I actually said in full. If you're going to quote someone Mooningcow you could at least quote the whole sentence, not half of it.

It was in response to :

Honestly my biggest fear is that Remain win and that boosts Farges popularity. By 2020 we could be in the EU with a UKIP government and that scares the shit out of me.

I've never heard such nonsense. I think Ouriana proved my point quite nicely that many leavers will say anything, they're not bothered if they're being honest or not.

I've also heard the argument that a leave vote means it will be fairer for those outsidethe EU to migrate here. Most leavers don't care about that either. They're just trying to hoodwink a few lefties.

I wasn't attacking anyone with my comment about real human beings with brains, I was in a state of disbelief at that point and trying to make my post a bit funny.

inarmsofanangel · 20/06/2016 19:39

Hi, I am very much thinking Brexit, not entirely sure yet. I married a Nigerian born in the UK (been here all his life) and have three mixed race kids. I've also travelled a lot with work to different countries and lived abroad for different periods of time.
Yes, there is the worry I guess that right wing extremists might leap on the bandwagon, yes it's a fear BUT IMO voting Brexit in itself is not 'racist'.
My definition of 'racist' though is very different to some people who actually have no idea about the word.
Labelling everyone racist and the over emphasis on PC is in itself causing more harm than good. It's a vicious circle. Common sense should come before all of that.

Paniniswapx3 · 20/06/2016 19:41

Do those voting to Remain agree with the Five President's Report & TTIP? They're my main reasons for voting out but I'm still in the undecided camp (mainly but erring on 'leave' with a DH voting Remain but he hasn't read the report or TTIP plans).

inarmsofanangel · 20/06/2016 19:41

Oh and some of the most racist and backward are actually within the EU itself.

inarmsofanangel · 20/06/2016 19:43

allthingsred - I agree with you completely

NameChanger22 · 20/06/2016 19:44

I am sure there are some leavers who aren't really that racist and are voting Brexit for reasons other than immigration, I just haven't met any yet.

Roonerspism · 20/06/2016 19:47

You are diluting the very serious accusation of "racism" with that

Who is the racism against, exactly? All people from the EU other than the UK? That's not even a "race" FFS

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 20/06/2016 19:49

Well you are debating with non racist leavers on here

Paniniswapx3 · 20/06/2016 19:49

You've 'met' one now NameChanger - could you answer re 5 Presidents Report & TTIP as im truly curious?

Why is it so terrible to be concerned about immigration anyway.

Paniniswapx3 - what is it specifically that you are worried about? At the heart of our government, big business and media there are people who want more power and control. They are spreading fear, hate and racism in order to get it. They're not bothered who gets hurt in the process.

I would change my vote at the last minute if someone presented me with some facts that showed me a vote to leave would be good for the majority of people, not just the UK. All I've seen is evidence to the contrary.

NameChanger22 · 20/06/2016 20:23

The popularity of UKIP has been growing. It only proves the power of the media, propaganda and how a charming 'watch me drinking and smoking and pretending not to be establishment' man can fool people. I think we've been here before haven't we? I think that's one of the reason we have the European Union now.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 20/06/2016 20:23

Nigel Farage would not get a position in government if we leave and will soon(ish) be out of a job apart from leader of UKIP

If we stay there will be an increase in votes for UKIP because they are the only party with a leave EU agenda and many people do want to leave

Cameron can negotiate all he likes but we know he won't get anywhere

So his influence isn't going to go away and I am sure will increase for too long we have underestimated how strongly people feel they were ignored by labour

Immigration wasn't a problem before Tony Blair was elected in 1997 but it is now especially within the M25. Those figures say it all. Thanks

NameChanger22 · 20/06/2016 20:30

Unfortunately Farage isn't going away, either in or out of Europe. But there's virtually no chance he'd ever have any real power. I have too much faith in people to believe that could happen nowadays.
