Brexit

Is anyone else getting quite tired of being called a racist?

I know it can't just be me.

It doesn't matter what carefully thought out reasons a brexiter has for wanting to leave (I've seen some very articulate and reasoned ones on mn itself) we are still all getting lumped into a stereotypical group of closet racist idiots.

And Lord forbid any of those reasons might just involve any concern over levels of eu migration!

I've been told that I'm essentially imagining the three week waiting list for my GP or that this is nothing to do with eu migration. If I say I know it is because of the names being called out I become the equivalent of Enoch Powell.

The same goes for a certain local estate very much being a no go area, especially for young girls. After braving this street once with my children and being spat on and shouted at by a group of very hostile Romanian men/boys I've been told I imagined it.

When I had my son a few week ago my I was the only English speaking person in my ward. A polish man was shouting and being very aggressive to staff as they were struggling to find an interpreter.

I absolutely know that not every migrant is aggressive and that they should build more schools and go surgeries but I believe I'm right to be concerned about a high number of migrants who are not intergrating with their local community and the unsustainable strain on services.

I'm sick of being told that my experiences don't matter. That to even mention that this is what life is like in our town means I am a racist or little englander.

It's not enough to be told "the NHS is failing because of austerity cuts not the 200,000 EU immigrants coming to live in the UK every year! They have nothing but a POSITIVE impact..."

Labour betrayed the poor when they came out in support of austerity and completed the conservatives job of turning us all into scroungers and grafters.

When they announce tax breaks and cuts people should be furious but their not bothered at all, completely buying in to the tory lie, and now with brexit and immigration, there seems little point trying to argue this case anymore. {despairs}

BreakingDad77 · 16/06/2016 10:52

Its not the immigrants fault that the government is banking the tax it earns from them to give rich people tax breaks.

They contribute more than they receive - so where is all that money going!!!

Sunshineonacloudyday · 16/06/2016 13:40

Boris Johnson may offer a job to Nigel Farage if they win this is turning into a circus. I wonder what the rest of the world is thinking of us now.

Farage won't get a job if we leave why would Boris and Gove need him

MrsBlackthorn · 16/06/2016 13:46

The anti-immigrant climate this has created is getting really scary. This story made me feel physically sick. Lord knows the horrors these poor children have gone through - and these sick bastards think it's funny?

What have those discusting thugs got to do with people voting in what they feel is right for the future of the country

Poor and ridiculous argument

MrsBlackthorn · 16/06/2016 14:34

Because people like Farage are whipping up anti-immigrant feeling and blaming immigrants for all our ills. It's hardly a surprise that people are taking this frustration out on the immigrants they meet.

MrsBlackthorn · 16/06/2016 14:37

And now we have an MP shot and stabbed by someone allegedly shouting "Britain First".

Not everyone who is voting Leave is a racist. But the xenophobic nature of the campaign has made a lot of racist views and opinions acceptable to a much broader audience than they previously were. And that's led to some nasty behaviour.

I agree not everyone wanting leave is racist. But if leave aren't acknowledging that right wing groups are making capital out of it and not putting space between their goals and right wing groups then we have a problem.

People worry about the far right on the move in Europe need some introspection.

MrsBlackthorn · 16/06/2016 15:04

But today we have to complete opposite - Farage front Leave with a poster that is almost exactly the same as 1930s Nazi propaganda.

Someone left a comment in the mirror about the England fans "The England fans once again letting their country down :-(". If you want to take pride in Britain you have to take pride with yourself first. The rule book can't be thrown out of the window as soon as you get to the airport.

SpoonintheBin · 16/06/2016 16:20

Mrs Blackthorn, I agree that poster is absolutely outrageous I cannot believe they are getting away with such blatant xenophobia. What I will remember from this entire campaign is just how decisive it is and how it created hate and mistrust between different communities. I feel that whichever side wins, in the years to come we will feel ashamed of the racist comments and attitudes that are poisoning the discussions.

SapphireStrange · 17/06/2016 13:59

I think even those undecided on the political and economic issues or who want to Leave will be voting remain just because of the vile attitudes and comments that man spouts.

I wish I could share your optimism and faith in human nature, Ouriana, but my gut feeling is that a lot of people agree with the poster and its sentiments. I'm just glad that it is now a police matter and I hope it gets taken seriously.

GBaylis1957 · 18/06/2016 17:38

I am not a mum, but came across this post when searching for the term 'I am fed up for being called a racist'.

I have two occasions of being labelled a racist over the last few years. The first was when I said that I was unhappy with dealing with Indian Call Centre staff, my reason being that they could not understand what I was saying and that I in turn could not make out their words. I was not being racist, merely pointing out that I preferred to speak to someone that I could understand, their race not being important, just how they could communicate.

The second instance occurred today when I got a call from the Portsonachan hotel after I wrote to them complaining of the state of their hotel. We had booked for 3 nights, but left after one as the room was dirty and not what we expected. I reason that I was called a racist was because I had mentioned that the Romanian staff, whilst being very polite, did not seem to have been trained properly, as they knew nothing about the local whisky or what custard was.

For this I was called a racist and was told that my letter would be sent to the Race Relations Board (which actually no longer exists under that name).

I do not think it is fair when you are called a racist for matters like this, in both instances it is the fault of those who employed the people in question, the Indian call staff, or the waiters at the hotel, for in both instances, it is up to them to make sure that they are up to and fit to carry our their jobs.

Their race may mean that they need more help / training, but that is not a racist comment, but one that is plain fact.

AppleSetsSail · 18/06/2016 18:11

I accept the argument that EU immigrants make a positive contribution to the UK economy, I accept that the NHS will suffer should we Brexit due to the sheer number of EU nationals working within it.

I simply don't want the UK to house 80 million people, I don't want to see the green spaces disappear, I don't believe the infrastructure can cope.

AppleSetsSail · 18/06/2016 18:22

BreakingDad it's wrong to couch this as a right-wing issue.

I would like to see a living wage and the end of government subsidies for cheap goods and corporate profits by way of tax credits, which is what winds up happening when British citizens compete with a tide of cheap labour.

I'd like to see workers having actual bargaining power with respect to how they decide to sell their labour.

It's true that nationality is an accident of birth, but we have no choice but to organise the planet into countries having citizens, taxes, budgets, planning, etc. The alternative is chaos.

RebelRogue · 18/06/2016 18:30

Once again, non eu migration is a lot higher than eu migration, and that's actually the government has full control of.
If you're worried about immigration that's fine,i can understand why.
If you're voting leave that's also fine.
But if you vote leave based purely on immigration you'll be sorely disappointed.

cansu · 18/06/2016 18:35

Have you ever heard a nurse being yelled at by a British person? Yes I would expect so. Therefore the fact that a Polish person did this is not in itself a very good piece of evidence to say you have been disadvantaged due to immigration. Actually I am fed up of hearing all the knee jerk moaning and scapegoating of immigrants and refugees. Spouting on under the guise of being concerned about immigration is usually a bit of a veil for spouting racist crap.

That's not true at all - it has been the case in the past, but not anymore.

fullfact.org/immigration/eu-migration-and-uk/

Like many others I believe the EU to be oppressive and inefficient, immigration is merely part of my Brexit vote.

AlcoChocs · 18/06/2016 19:27

I think some aspects of the EU could be seen as racist.
Workers from India, the Philippines and other "non white" countries used to be employed in UK care homes and hospitals. They're no longer allowed work permits as priority has to be given to white Europeans, i.e. EU citizens.
Voting Leave might lead to a fairer system.

HooseRice · 18/06/2016 21:48

While not all leavers are racist, all racists are leavers
