Is anyone else getting quite tired of being called a racist?

I know it can't just be me.

It doesn't matter what carefully thought out reasons a brexiter has for wanting to leave (I've seen some very articulate and reasoned ones on mn itself) we are still all getting lumped into a stereotypical group of closet racist idiots.

And Lord forbid any of those reasons might just involve any concern over levels of eu migration!

I've been told that I'm essentially imagining the three week waiting list for my GP or that this is nothing to do with eu migration. If I say I know it is because of the names being called out I become the equivalent of Enoch Powell.

The same goes for a certain local estate very much being a no go area, especially for young girls. After braving this street once with my children and being spat on and shouted at by a group of very hostile Romanian men/boys I've been told I imagined it.

When I had my son a few week ago my I was the only English speaking person in my ward. A polish man was shouting and being very aggressive to staff as they were struggling to find an interpreter.

I absolutely know that not every migrant is aggressive and that they should build more schools and go surgeries but I believe I'm right to be concerned about a high number of migrants who are not intergrating with their local community and the unsustainable strain on services.

I'm sick of being told that my experiences don't matter. That to even mention that this is what life is like in our town means I am a racist or little englander.

Funny
I just found this thread when my last post on another thread was about how I'm worried that accusations of racism are getting out of hand
I'm not white btw
Accusing people of being racist when they aren't cant be helping anyone surely?

Enthusiasm, what you're advocating is the very definition of populism

TooMuchMNTime · 14/06/2016 20:06

Mrs, that's interesting, I've never seen that on here, certainly I've never had anyone here minimise when I've been upset about a racist incident. But then MN is huge even if I am here a lot Wink

Oh, there's plenty of it. "You're oversensitive/overthinking it" "I say that sort of thing to all my black friends all the time- they think it's hilarious".......

TooMuchMNTime · 14/06/2016 20:13

Mrs, I NC a lot.

I also think racism is used when xenophobia might be the right word.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 14/06/2016 20:14

Oh there are many threads where people have been told that they are looking for racism

The one I remember was Oprah Winfrey and her looking at a handbag in a very exclusive shop

Is that right Chalalala listening to people's concerns and fears is a bad thing

Of course it is

But labour ignored them Farage didn't and now they are the third party in way of votes in this country

Politics isn't nice at times I really dislike how this referendum on both sides has been run

What I meant is that he listens to the people who feel they have been ignored

Not all who feel this way about labour or the Tory party support him but far too many do now

Do you feel labour and I am assuming you are a labour supporter have ignored you

I live in one of the most multicultural cities in the UK, with one of the highest proportion of immigrants. The majority of the people in my street are immigrants.

Guess what, I've never had to wait for more than a day for a GP appointment, I almost always get one the same day. I blame all those immigrant doctors.

I've seen shouting, antisocial drunken nonsense, but almost always from white British men. Most of the friendliest and polite people I know are not white. I think there is real integration where I live and that makes me very proud of my city. Maybe you should move here OP so you can become even less racist, there's always room for improvement.

Wow, busy day on here! Well done jellied despite the sweeping bombardment.

Just backing up a bit (so many posts ). but to bleak, and others making similar points attempting to derail the issue with 'plenty of unemployed 'white' British claiming benefits and putting nothing in argument.

We as a society (Britain) democratically decided how we wanted to structure our society. We created a welfare state to provide health care and support to those of 'us' in need. We accepted a proportion of 'our' population needed support from the majority to live, and we still live by and are proud of, those standards. However the uk's welfare state wasn't democratically created to support a European nation. We have sent massive amounts of aid to developing countries, and we're all proud that we have done so. Any world stage crisis is met by compassion and generosity here in the uk, just look at comic relief etc. It's really quite staggering, which is why I find the whole remains 'you're racist' campaign so so offensive.

Only the remains have made this about race. The leaves, have clearly made it about numbers.

We can't keep this open door policy going. We can't afford it. China had a 1 child policy for over 35 years, they're just easing to 2 now, why do you think that is? China is a fecking huge country, it's not about geographic space, it's all about resources and the ability to support its people. The nation has thrived, at a cost of approximately 400million births. (Chinese govt data)

Back to OP. Yep I'm still fecking sick and tired of being called a racist, and any sensible debate on immigration numbers being shut down.

But back to the 'I've a lovely Lithuanian nanny' row.

Peppatina · 14/06/2016 21:26

Yes Namechanger22 we have already established that I am a huge racist for mentioning a nationality but moving on...

Maybe it's because you are in a city and not a town/village? I'd imagine there is already a fair amount of infrastructure in place for a large amount of people and probably a larger share of money with which to keep on top of it.

Not so much in my smaller town which was coping well with eu migration until an apparent boom in our area three years ago. Definitely not coping now.

The thing is, there is a shortage of GP appointments and school places in areas where there aren't loads of immigrants too.........

Where I live there is a very brief influx of strawberry pickers for q couple of weeks but the rest of the time it's pure Anglo Saxon. Most people have lived in the same town for generations. There's a minimum 2 week wait for a GP appointment and a shortage of primary school places. At least you don't have to wait 5 years for a hip replacement like you used to in the dim and distant 1070s- that golden age we all hark back to.

Peppatina · 14/06/2016 21:42

I do understand that Bertrand, I really do.

But when I was asked if I felt immigration had affected me I used the gp as an example because in my area it certainly is due to a large amount of recent immigration.

YANBE. I for one am not opposed to immigration, but the current situation has left the UK in massive economic decline ( oh I know about the stats, but really! does anyone really believe them?)
Where I live is now mostly populated by Eastern Europeans .
A good many have good work ethics, are considerate and contribute to our economy, alas the largest percentage are lawless benefit grabbers and have nil consideration for others or themselves if the truth be told.
Many of my nice neighbours ( of all ethnicities, I might add) are leaving in their droves to escape the bedlam that is our estate,
We daren't answer our door now, because about half of all callers are begging.
Bad landlords are letting out garages and glorified sheds to newcomers.
It's a bloody awful mess.
How can the poorer countries ever recover if they have no workforce?
I know for a fact a lot of UK employers advertise jobs in Eastern Europe.
I heard someone mention; " How else would we get British people to work in our factories and Farms?"
What a bloody insult. I struggle to find any employment at now.
BTW factory work is often highly skilled and well paid; we dont all stand on a production line .
I have seen so many potentially dangerous situations at work due to the fact people don't have a basic grasp of English.
Hazard signs written by non English speakers, that make no sense whatsoever.
Rant over.

The population of the UK hasn't increased that much.

Ouriana - I didn't accuse anyone of racism, I said there is always room for improvement.

If there's a problem with school places and GP appointments where you live because of increased numbers that will mostly be because of Tory spending cuts and poor management. If you have more people in a town paying more income tax and council tax that should mean there is more money in the pot for things like schools and doctors. Except, it doesn't often work like that when you have a government intent on squeezing us all dry and running things down so they can sell off the country to private companies. People are looking in the wrong place for scapegoats, you are being misled by the media. Please be aware of that.

mountaintoclimb · 14/06/2016 22:32

Namechanger I've seen shouting, antisocial drunken nonsense, but almost always from white British men. Most of the friendliest and polite people I know are not white.

Who's being racist now?

AnotherPrickInTheWall · 14/06/2016 22:33

The population has vastly increased, Statistics are based on a few random " interviews" on the channel ferry.
The real statistics lie in the number of people who have NI cards.
There lies the actual numbers.
I was a sceptic until about 5 or 6 years ago and saw vast numbers of people from mainly Romania, Bulagria etc moving in. Not a trickle but an almighty deluge.
