I like the idea, and I've 'sort of' talked dh round but I don't want to 'shell' out on them for them to not be quite as good as everyone says they are....

and where's the best place to get them?? should I be swayed???? see, I'm over halfway there already !!!

I tried them for a while but just found them messy and annoying in the end - always had a soggy sock hanging around! Have now opted for aquados simply.

sophiewd · 05/07/2008 09:29

Tried them for a bit but didn't like them, also found they stained white towels.

theSuburbanDryad · 05/07/2008 09:32

We use Soapnuts and they're really fab. Much cheaper than detergents and work brilliantly. I use cloth nappies for ds and they get them clean - you just have to adjust the heat of the wash to how dirty things are IYSWIM.

I also put some essential oil in the fabric conditioner drawer so the washing smells nice. Then use dryer balls to get sheets and towels and ds' nappies soft.

We get them from Ethicalasuperstore.com

nannyL · 05/07/2008 09:48

I got a sample from here www.inasoapnutshell.com/

about 50p I think which covered the paypal cost and P&P
I was really impressed and when i have run out of detergent i will get a big batch and convert.

I would argue that my clothes were cleaner than with my waitrose bio liq which is what i normally use

dylsmum1998 · 05/07/2008 11:05

i found they didnt get my dd's tops clean, we eat a lot of tomato based foods and they didnt touch the food that was on her tops

aDad · 05/07/2008 11:16

We converted and haven't looked back. Cheap, effective, and as suburbanDryad says, add some essential oil.

Not messy at all if you use one of those zip up tablet bag thingies.

PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 05/07/2008 11:19

huh, this is interesting, I remember reading a blurb and thinking, 'too good to be true' - not so, eh?

dylsmum1998 · 05/07/2008 11:22

what temps do those of you that like them wash at?
i really like the idea of them but didnt find they shifted stains, is there anything i could have used to boost them?

nannyL · 05/07/2008 11:35

i use them at 40
(60 for bedding and towels)

IMO 30 doesnt shift stains no matter what detergent type stuff you use

lazarou · 05/07/2008 11:37

They don't remove stains so not good imo

dylsmum1998 · 05/07/2008 11:39

I like them. I don't use them on whites, and I use vanish first on big stains, but they make towels soft but still absorbent.

I tend to wash with them at 40.

Ooh, and the other week I actually got round to boiling up some old ones and putting the liquid in a mr muscle bottle - it is really good!

Flamesparrow · 05/07/2008 11:42

They do get out most of my stains without the vanish.

Being a bit dense, what does "white goods snake oil" mean?

nannyL · 05/07/2008 11:43

i was wondering what that meant too ?

We like them but I do admit they don't get rid of big stains. But then I'm not sure anything would get rid of the stains on ds' clothes after he's eaten in them.

We do sometimes put a tiny amount of ecover in the drawer too.

Amphibimum · 05/07/2008 12:01

have used them too. cant say i find anything gets stains out of my dc's (and often mine too) clothes, so i might as well use these

3Ddonut · 05/07/2008 16:08

I find that my usual stuff (Ariel) doesn't shift the food stains either, but what is absolute magic for stains, especially tomatoey ones, it's sooo simple and sooo 'eco' hang them on the washing line in the sun, and the sun 'bleaches' the staing away, I am constantly suprised by what a difference it makes!!!!!

Am a little more undecided on the soapnuts now??
