Can you live without kitchen roll?

MrsJamin · 03/07/2008 21:58

If I have kitchen roll I use it for a million things, so I'm trying to see whether I can go without it to be a bit greener, and use microfibre cloths, tea towels etc instead.

Does anyone else not use kitchen roll? What do you use instead? The only things which I can't work out what else to use are:

  • blotting oil from sausages after grilling
  • final removal of oil from grillpan

I don't use kitchen roll for either of those things:

Let the oil drain off the sausages

Wash the grill pan in soap and water

Madlentileater · 03/07/2008 21:59

if you have some brown paper bags you can use those, but we never have enough!

thisisyesterday · 03/07/2008 22:01

my mum never used to use kitchen roll because she couldn't afford it
I can't imagine sausages have that much oil on if they're grilled do they? if so then I guess just let it drain off, or use a clean tea towel?

just wash the grill pan...?

choccypig · 03/07/2008 22:01

But I always wonder, if you then wash the cloths, is that using more energy than using 100% recycled paper, and composting them afterwards.

beaniesteve · 03/07/2008 22:04

I never ever ever buy kitchen roll. Does this make me wierd?

I only recently started buying fabric conditioner because my OH wants it.

southeastastra · 03/07/2008 22:04

i get through 8 rolls a week, though we call it polly roll

hellymelly · 03/07/2008 22:05

I have never even bought kitchen roll,in fact i didn't really understand what it was for!I use cloths cut from old cotton clothes (old t-shirts,pyjamas etc that have got worn and holey)I use them for messy cleaning and then shove them in with a hot wash,it works really well.I have a little pile of them ! I would probably use a clean tea-towel to blot sausages, but I am veggie so it doesn't come up.

Goober · 03/07/2008 22:08

No way could we live without it.
Cleaning windows, drying raw meat, blotting oil, lunchbox's, blowing noses, wiping the floor, wiping the dog's slobbery mouth.
So much more hygenic as it is disposable/recyclable.

shreddies · 03/07/2008 22:08

I hardly ever have kitchen roll, just because I am forgetful, and the only time I wish I had some is when I cook bacon. Don't need it for anything else imo

morningpaper · 03/07/2008 22:10

I don't buy kitchen roll either

I don't blot sausages although I tend to casserole them

ShowOfHands · 03/07/2008 22:12

Never bought it.

MrsJamin · 03/07/2008 22:17

quite a range of MN opinion there! I like to get as much oil from sausages as possible. And I use it on the grill pan after I have washed it with hot water and washing up liquid. I think I am going to continue to try to live without it, I'm trying to reduce the amounts of disposable things I buy. The other thing I have been debating are tissues when you have a cold- thinking of buying some hankies, how old school is that?!

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 03/07/2008 22:18

drying meat?? seriously?

thisisyesterday · 03/07/2008 22:18

oh yes, hankies all the way here. we have millions of them lol

WendyWeber · 03/07/2008 22:20

I used to buy kitchen roll for the rare occasions I found it useful, but DH always blew his nose on it so when I did need it there wasn't any , so I stopped buying it - it's really unnecessary.

Bake sausages, don't grill them, the fat will run off as you lift them out; then let the hot grease set, when you can lift it out with a spatula and bin it.

For anything that needs wiping, get microfibre cloths (Aldi do them, dead cheap, in 3 or 4 colours so you can colour-code to the job) - they are the best cleaning cloths (you won't believe it until you try) & you can put them in the dishwasher or washing machine up to 90 degrees.

WendyWeber · 03/07/2008 22:21

Nooooo, MrsJ, even I draw the line at hankies

Buy tissues at Lidl, 33p for a box of 150, they're less luxurious than Kleenex but about 1/6 of the price!

shreddies · 03/07/2008 22:23

DH very into hankies. I tend to use bog roll

morningpaper · 03/07/2008 22:23

we have hankies too - everywhere!

I don't understand why meat needs drying either

MrsJamin · 03/07/2008 22:28

I guess I just like soaking up the extra fat if I'm not using really lean sausages.

Yes as mentioned in the OP I am using Microfibre cloths - brilliant for soaking up anything. I have different coloured ones too. I love the fact that they are eco and very good at the job - sometimes it feels like you have to choose one over the other.

Perhaps I'll rethink the hankies idea...

Goober · 03/07/2008 22:28

I don't pat, or rub meat, just drain it on Bounty. If it is too wet when you put it in a wok it spits and sprays everywhere.

WendyWeber · 03/07/2008 22:30

Oh sorry, missed that

Hankies are disgusting, they need soaking and/or a boilwash, which is probably more wasteful than using tissues.

thisisyesterday · 03/07/2008 22:31

have never soaked or boiled a hanky. they seem to come out fine
don't soak or boil my nappies either for that matter, and they're arguably worse than hankies

choosyfloosy · 03/07/2008 22:34

hankies are the way forward IMO. much nicer on the nose.

don't buy kitchen roll. has never occurred to me to blot fat off sausages - prob why I'm overweight. i suppose i sometimes line the grill pan with foil (only when I remember, which is rarely) which must be more wasteful than kitchen roll. however, mostly I bake them or casserole them.

yvonnek · 03/07/2008 22:34

when you grill sausages do you not have them on a wire tray so the fat runs off down onto the tray beneath? and if you line the tray with tin foil it save on the washing up liquid so often. just replace the foil once it's manky. if the stuff isn't too greasy you can use it a few times before it needs changing. sausages however usually requiring changing everytime as the fat smokes when heated up

giraffescantdance · 03/07/2008 22:36

never use it
