So what do you loathe washing out to re-cycle? For me, it's the Peanut Butter jar!

We recycle everything where possible, but I hate the peanut butter jars. You have to soak them for ages - or put them in dishwasher & then scrape the bits of paper label from the bottom of the washer.

Most other jars just rinse straight out.

Oh, and cooking oil bottles.

DO you ever just think, I recycle everything else, that jar can go in the bin.....

I refuse to wash out tuna fish tins. Lifes too short.

2sugars · 24/06/2008 20:35

Well, I hope I don't set the cat amongst the pigeons, but I don't wash out anything I put out. Although PB jars go in the bin. Can't think of anything else that doesn't have a lid to keep the flies away that we recycle. When they decide to de-meter us I will decide to wash out.

suedonim · 24/06/2008 21:09

You recycle with lids 2Sugars? I think including the lids is a hanging crime in our area!

I always wonder about the recycle v energy aspect as well. A tip for reducing the size of plastic milk containers; if you have some boiling water leftover, pour it into the bottle, then (carefully, cos it's hot!) tip out the water and quickly squish the bottle down. Another tip; feed your pets on dry foods, then there's no yukky tin to dispose of.

Nighbynight · 24/06/2008 21:35

I never used to wash anything, until we got a dishwasher, now everything goes in teh dishwasher, jars, tins, yoghurt pots etc. I have even cut the tops off tetrapaks and put them in before recycling.

boogiewoogie · 24/06/2008 21:44

Agree with fish tins, peanut butter jars, marmite and mayonnaise! Now that they collect plastic as well, we even rinse out cheese packets and other flimsy bits of plastic which are a pita to dry.

Milliways · 24/06/2008 21:44

But do you gets bits of washed off label all around your dishwasher filter??

OP posts:
Nighbynight · 24/06/2008 21:50

no, they stick on pretty well actually. I put them in the top with the mugs, and my dishwasher is not so active in this area, so maybe that's why.

Milliways · 24/06/2008 22:15

If I put them in the top, the labels fly off & wrap around stuff in the bottom! Worst case was a label baked onto a glass!

It's great being green

Nighbynight · 24/06/2008 22:19

um, now you mention it, I have got a small bit of label currently baked onto the side of a pyrex dish. but it doesnt happen often!

Milliways · 24/06/2008 22:20

Lol

so glad to read the op. I wash out all jars except peanut butter ones.they go in the bin.

DontCallMeBaby · 24/06/2008 22:32

Hm, my DH is clearly a saint - he is responsible for all washing up, including recycling. He hates peanuts and peanut butter, I love them, washing out peanut butter jars must be a nightmare for him. Good job I alternate it with lemon curd and Nutella so he doesn't have to do them to often.

RusselBrussel · 24/06/2008 22:35

Peanut butter jars go straight in the bin. Luckily we go through about 2 jars a year, so don't feel too guilty.
Have a mayonnaise jar sitting 'soaking' in the sink. Can't face it now, will scrub it in the morning.

SlartyBartFast · 24/06/2008 22:38

peanut butter is fine i find, well scraped before going in dishwahser.
i dothe same with marmite do i get a date

oil bottles are the worst, don't actually bother to rinse those

SlartyBartFast · 24/06/2008 22:39

come to think of it we have a plastic cup currently with the remains of a label (from peanut butter jar) stuck on it

LobstersLass · 24/06/2008 22:59

Marmite, mayonnaise and peanut butter.
All vile to wash out.

It is definitley more environmentally friendly to recycle the glass. Ok it uses a lot of energy, but not anything like making glass in the first place!!

225 kg of CO2 is saved for every tonne used
1.2 tonnes of raw materials quarrying is saved for every tonne used

Milliways · 24/06/2008 23:00

We could start a new Eco Trendy range of Peanut Butter Stickered glasses

You can buy peanut butter in big vats from the likes of Holland and Barratt- much cheaper if you eat a lot and much less packaging as well.

littlefrog · 25/06/2008 16:10

def go for the big pots of peanut butter, MUCH cheaper!
I use a squidgy spatula thing to get out most of the solidy stuff, then put hot water in with a bit of washing up liquid and shake it all around really hard. That gets rid of almost everything, and what's left will I think come off in processing.

girlandboy · 25/06/2008 20:59

Where do you re-cycle your marge tubs. Our council won't take them, or yogurt pots either. If it's plastic but not a bottle then they don't want to know.

Milliways · 25/06/2008 23:05

My DD only eats Sainsbury's Crunchy Pnut Butter, we've tried other own brands & Sunpat etc, but they all get shunned, so no point buying a Vat of stuff

I put marg tubs & yoghurt pots in the plastic recycling at the Supermarket car park - it takes all sorts, even plastic bags, although our doorstep collection will only take bottles.

Give peanut butter jar to pet rodents (rats or mice) to clean for me. Precious little left by the time I retrieve it from cage.

Ditto for most plates, casserole dishes and jars, actually, The domesticated Vermin have to earn their keep around here (if only they were good for nibbling up head lice, sigh).

fondant4000 · 30/06/2008 13:22

I too have put peanut butter jars in ordinary bib .

I hate washing used silver foil.

I also hate trying to decipher what plastic you can/can't recycle:

plastic milk bottles - yes, yogurt pots - no, marg tubs - no, fruit punnets - no, water bottles - yes (though tend to reuse for tap water), egg cartons (plastic) - no ..... arrrghh!

dylsmum1998 · 01/07/2008 12:14

i hate washing out the bovril jars so sticky to get out of them

ScarletA · 01/07/2008 12:17
