So what do you loathe washing out to re-cycle? For me, it's the Peanut Butter jar!

We recycle everything where possible, but I hate the peanut butter jars. You have to soak them for ages - or put them in dishwasher & then scrape the bits of paper label from the bottom of the washer.

Most other jars just rinse straight out.

Oh, and cooking oil bottles.

DO you ever just think, I recycle everything else, that jar can go in the bin.....

Peanut butter jars are definitely the worst. And for some reason when you leave them to soak overnight, the soaking water STINKS especially badly the next day.

I must confess to occasionally just binning them when I feel too grimmed out

Cat food tins

Milliways · 24/06/2008 16:59

Ah Betty, we use the very eco-unfriendly cat pouches

But the dog-tins usually rinse fine & not too smelly.

Glad it's not just me with the P/nut Butter - & we get through a jar a week!

I hate the peanut butter jars too, and smelly fish tins.

I have to confess to not washing oil bottles before they go in recycling

AMumInScotland · 24/06/2008 17:06

Deffo the cooking oil bottles - I just threw one out the other day, because we've been having a problem with the drain and I think I'd have to use half a bottle of washing-up liquid to be sure I'd really emulsioned all the oil and not just warmed it up and sent it down to clog the drain again.

Not sure how one unrecycled plastic bottle compares with half a bottle of washing-up liquid in the bad-for-the-planet stakes...

Anna8888 · 24/06/2008 17:09

Put it all in the dishwasher.

micci25 · 24/06/2008 17:11

Pesto!

But i did read something that said that the industrial washing process for glass means you shouldn't bother. Wish I could remember where as I wonder if I imagined it!!!

We don't eat peanut butter, but can imagine! Pesto is oily and hard to get out!

OverYOURDeadBody · 24/06/2008 18:59

I do sometimes wonder if it really is more environmentally friendly to recycle, given the water and detergent we use to clean them, and then the industrial cleaning and sorting it all goes through before it even gets to the stage where it can be broken down and made into new stuff. That's an awful lot of energy!

Milliways · 24/06/2008 19:20

But if we left it out in the recycling bins unwashed, we would be over-run with foxes, rats etc.....

I don't have peanut butter, but marmite jars take a lifetime

wotulookinat · 24/06/2008 19:27

Ketchup.

nickytwotimes · 24/06/2008 19:30

Mayonnaise.
I put it in the landfill bin.

I am ashamed!

BettySpaghetti · 24/06/2008 19:41

flamesparrow -with Marmite jars add some boiling water and give it a shake then use the liquid in your cooking

Flamesparrow · 24/06/2008 19:45

Oooh I love you!

FrannyandZooey · 24/06/2008 19:46

wotulookinat · 24/06/2008 20:11

BettySpaghetti · 24/06/2008 20:15

filthymindedbolshevixen · 24/06/2008 20:16

choc spread jars. Agggh!

lisasimpson · 24/06/2008 20:17

margarine tubs

wotulookinat · 24/06/2008 20:19

I give the marge tubs to the dog to lick out - problem solved! Good for his coat, too.

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/06/2008 20:25

Can't put marg tubs in our recycle bins! Our vet recommended putting marg on our old dogs food when he had skin problems!

Agree on the peanut butter jar and washed a mayo jar the other day and at 8 weeks pg it made me feel ill!
