Not sure if this is nationwide or not, but they are doing it in our our town.

Now all we have to do is persuade the manufacturers to cut down on packaging!

They will still sell them though Cynical old me...no this is good.
I saw a high up bloke from sainsbos saying they couldnt possibly use recycled material to make thier carriers with as there wasnt enough around as they give away 15 MILLIONS BAGS a week, or was it a day? And I just thought OMFG.

Spoo · 28/05/2008 18:28

Doing it in our town too. I keep forgetting my bags though. Can anyone recommend a way of remembering?

fullmoonfiend · 28/05/2008 18:33

lol spoo, that is the problem...I always have one in my handbag, but then I end up buying more than I planned and it won't fit in and...

Plus, let's face it, one packet of looroll and your bag is full anyway...

Hang a BIG one on the door, and walk past it on way out, thats what I do! I have 5 and have at least one in the car, so even if I forget instore i load it in it from the trolley.

misspopov · 28/05/2008 18:44

I store mine in the car as I kept forgetting to take them out with me.

OverMyDeadBody · 28/05/2008 18:47

Get one of these spoo, and clip it to your handbag or just keep it in your handbag.

I have two and they are really really good.

I've made myself some bags with different designs on them,( put a pic on my profile).

Know it's not about how they look but I actually find I'm less likely to forget them, and I gave one to my teenage niece and now she doesn't accept plastic bags even in clothes shops.

charliecat · 28/05/2008 19:10

very nice, how dya do that?

tassisssss · 28/05/2008 19:12

another vote for storing them in the car

you still get to the shop with LO in trolley and remember they're in the car, but surely it'll become a habit before long!

3kids1cat · 28/05/2008 19:40

charlie, did them with some transfer paper, scanned the buttons, printed it out. Just makes them a bit prettier, plus I don't have to walk round advertising tesco etc.

I walk everywhere with my DS in his pram most of the time so always keep one of the material bags in it incase I buy too much or something too fragile to chuck in the basket

shymum · 28/05/2008 20:39

If you use those thick reusable carrier bags rather than hessian ones (I find Next carrier bags do the trick quite well) you can roll them up really tight, put them in an elastic band and stick them in your handbag. i usually fit three which is enough for my weekly shop and as they're always there there's no need to remember to take them!

charliecat · 28/05/2008 21:24

very cool!

LyraSilvertongue · 28/05/2008 21:27

Good, it's about time.
I keep big reusable bags in the car for when I'm doing a big shop, a couple in the bottom of the pushchair for smaller shops and an Onya Bag in my bag for when I'm popping in for a pint of milk.
I got my Onya Bag on eBay and it really does fold up small enough to fit inside a closed fist, so I've always got it on me.

LyraSilvertongue · 28/05/2008 21:32

Shop assistants still automatically try to give me a bag. i have to say 'no I don't need a bag, thanks' and they look at me like I'm mad

charliecat · 28/05/2008 21:45

I really DETEST the way they have been trained like robots to pull them off and pass them to you...for even just one item.

shymum · 29/05/2008 19:30

It's the way they look at you as if you're completely mad and as if to say "why wouldn't you want a bag?".

Morrisons has given away a few million reusable bags to its customers over the last week or so - i went again yesterday armed with my bags and looked around - i saw two people with them - and about three hundred with none. People just can't be bothered making that little effort - its pathetic.

meglet · 29/05/2008 19:41

Morrisons staff think I'm barking as I don't need anymore re-useable bags. they keep saying "are you sure??? they're free!"

Er no, I have loads of cloth, re-useable plastic bags nowadays. I thought the idea was to not accumulate more clutter.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 02/06/2008 17:25

I store my plastic bags in the car to be reused but still forget to take them in. I've only remembered them once in the past 8 months.

Idobelieveinfairies · 02/06/2008 17:30

They are doing it here at the co-op...it is a great idea-but hard to get used to! i have been keeping them in the boot, but forget to take them in with me!

When it is a big shop, the bags fill up the trolley...can get quite tricky!

nannyL · 02/06/2008 19:01

I went to asda on sunday

they were giving out carrier bags for free

i said to the lady "i thought as of today you had to pay for bags" she replied "everyone else is giving them away and i havent been told any different"

3Ddonut · 07/06/2008 16:34

If the supermarkets did charge for the bags, then people would remember their bags!!! I'm not a good advocate, I do tend to forget my bags then feel guilty when I get to the till!!! I saw an ad for a bag that folds up as small as an umbrella and clips to either side of the trolley, it massive apparantly! IT was about £12, my handbag is quite small which is why I never seem to have one, but I would carry this I think!!!

BouncingTurtle · 07/06/2008 16:40

More supermarkets should do this, IMO.

I keep mine by the front door, as I sometimes go shopping in my car, sometimes with DH in his car or sometimes I walk.
Drives me mad when there is no queue at the check out, so operator is scanning shopping as I am unloading trolley and they start bagging stuff - have to tell them straight away that I have my own bags.
Then they get a bit annoyed because I don't start packing until I have finished unloading the trolley!
Agghh!! That's why I generally go to a checkout where there is someone already being served.
