Just as it says in the title.

Oh and a good conditioner bar.

Would be nice now to eliminate some plastic.

No. But admittedly I only tried one (although it was from a very good organic company whose other products I love). I didn't want to waste any more money and figured if they couldn't make a good one then probably no one else could either. Obviously I might be completely wrong!

All the ones i have tried have been great and I prefer them to much bottled shampoo and conditioner and they last ages.
I like the Grum one ones and the ones Smol do . Currently I am using Tresame coconut shampoo bar that was a present and that's lovely too.
I am using it with Marcel's green soap conditioner bar.

I really rate the grum ones. I've had a few that didn't feel like they washed my hair properly but the grum one was fabulous.

I know this wasn't what u were asking but I now just use plastic bottle shampoo and send off the bottles (and other plastic) to Mull Club.

I like Kin Kind. I found that bar shampoo/ conditioner results are more variable than traditional products re water hardness, hair length (and texture) though.

Fifthtimelucky · 15/04/2024 13:25

I use Seanik from Lush. It's blue and lasts for ages.

I have never been able to find a decent solid or semi solid conditioner, unfortunately.

pyewatchet · 15/04/2024 13:27

I've found the Garnier and John Frieda ones do a decent job for shampooing. I think the Aussie Hair ones are supposed to be ok too.

MadamWillYouTalk · 15/04/2024 13:31

I like the Soul and Soap ones - I've recently started using the conditioner as well as the shampoo bars and so far no complaints!

Another vote for Grum .. really good

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/04/2024 13:39

Grum are good. Faith in Nature aren’t bad. I am currently using a Head & Shoulders one which I love.

Pieceofpurplesky · 15/04/2024 13:40

Friend bought me a tropic one for Christmas that is brilliant (and cleared my psoriasis).

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/04/2024 13:40

I haven’t needed conditioner since transitioning to bar shampoos. They don’t strip your hair of oils in the same way as normal shampoos.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 15/04/2024 13:45

There are 2 types of shampoo bar.

Kin Kind, Gruum, Lush, the ones by established shampoo brands tend to be the same ingredients are 'normal' shampoo just with the water taken out.

The ones by little companies that put a big emphasis on 'natural' and 'organic' are often soap based. They give quite different results, and may need different techniques such as a vinegar rinse to prevent build up.

Some people like the soap type a lot once they get used to it but it's more of an adjustment, whereas the solid shampoo is a simple switch of format.

Lavender14 · 15/04/2024 13:51

I like the lush shampoo bars but I find them harsh on my colour so might depend on what your hair colour is. They were grand when I was blonde and brunette but they take the red dye out of my hair quite quickly.

I haven't found a good conditioning bar yet they always leave my hair feeling coated/ greasy so I tend to avoid these and just use normal conditioner.

You could also go to the likes of body shop who will refill containers for you.

That makes a lot of sense. The Grum one and Head and Shoulders ones both foam way more than the others I have tried. Of the others the reason I like Faith In Nature is that it is the only one not to need a vinegar rinse.

Wow amazing! Thanks everyone.😊

I've heard they work better in soft water areas

I like the garnier oat shampoo bar best but can't use it continuously but I figure using it half the time is still reducing plastic waste (plus there's lots of zero waste refill stations near me.)

Hi, I've got dry curly hair so I'm not sure if my recommendations below will suit your hair type.

If you are in a hard water area the soap based shampoo bars may not work as well for you ( can leave a lot of waxy residue which can be useful to a point to help with any frizz but can get too waxy).

Shampoo bars that are not soap based work well in all water (so I've been told) these are more like regular shampoo without the added water content.

To tell the difference between the two you need to look at the ingredients list.

Soap based bars would have ingredients like sodium cocoate, sodium olivate and sodium castorate similar to a cold process bar of soap. I've used these with success but it depends on how dry frizzy and curly your hair is and the hardness if the water in your area. I think when people say they don't get on with shampoo bars maybe this is the type they have tried.

Non soap shampoo bars are more like regular shampoo. These will have ingredients like sodium cocyl Isethionate (sometimes listed as SCI) , decyl glucoside and disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate.

I've tried the following so far and would buy them all again.
Shampoo soap based -
Friendly soap, The Natural Spa, The Good Soap Company.

Shampoo non soap based.
Ethique the frizz wrangler, Ethique healy kiwi and Faith in nature, gruum coconut shampoo bar.

Conditioner bars that I recommend are-
Friendly Soap - quite a heavy lots of slip conditioner.

The Natural Spa - lasts ages and not as heavy as friendly soap one.

Ethique - The Guardian conditioner bar probably the best but also the most expensive!

Gruum - rinses and detangles well feels like a regular bottled conditioner.

Hope that helps, realised I've waffled on for a while there! Hope you find something to suit you 🙂

The blue one from Lush is lovely - Seanik or something.
I've tried lots of others but they leave my hair sticky and soapy despite extensive rinsing.

FloofyBird · 16/04/2024 00:35

Gruum

A little independent business called
'Soaps for little Suds' is fantastic for this. The owner is very knowledgeable about hair types and the prices are good!

motherboredd · 16/04/2024 00:52

I've had a few supermarket ones and found them to ok. All the solid conditioner I have tried is crap.

I recommend her too. Lathers and cleans very well.
