I have seen some useless pointless shite on the White Co website in my time but this really takes the prize

this has tipped me over the edge. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Whilst I can't deny liking nice things I have become increasingly fed up with it all and I feel I have had it with all this farking aspirational-have-a-perfect-(off-the-shelf)-house-and-you-will-have-a-perfect-life shite. I rang them up and asked them to stop delivering their poisonous catalogue to me. (in my defence, I have no memory of asking them to deliver it in the first place). and I didn;t actually call it poisonous. And I did John Lewis too.

I feel a bit conflicted. I know I'll never totally stop caring about fashion, design, and the like but god I wish I could. And I'm resolved to try. harder.

£8!! Mmmmmm bargain for such a pointless piece of holey plastic!

TheFallenMadonna · 13/03/2008 17:55

Only in your bathroom? But it can be positioned next to any hand basin.

Where's Quattrocento? She's got lots of sinks...

Kathyis6incheshigh · 13/03/2008 17:57

At least that one is only £8.
What about this one from Molton Brown?
And it matches a particular flavour of handwash, so if you got bored with the one you were using you'd need to pay another £75 for a different one.

hatwoman · 13/03/2008 17:58

I am speechless

Seventy. Five. Pounds.

Shoot me someone.

PestoMonster · 13/03/2008 18:02

BANG!!!!!!!!

hatwoman · 13/03/2008 18:02

and I bet some of the people who spend said £75 have a compost heap and buy organic food. they just. don't. get. it.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 13/03/2008 18:02

Thank you. Tis a blessed relief.

Seventy. Five. Fucking. Pounds.

Lulumama · 13/03/2008 18:03

It is the kind of thing that makes me not mind not being rich, if this is what rich people spend their money on. We're not missing out at all really, are we?

shreddies · 13/03/2008 18:08

I hate that sort of crap. I am also beginning to loathe weekend newspaper supplements that bang on about aspirational rubbish like that, or the top ten moisturisers, all of which are £20+, teatowels from the Conran shop etc etc as if it's perfectly normal to spend what disposable income you have on expensive luxury items.

Spaceman · 13/03/2008 18:19

Thank god I'm not alone out there. It all comes under 'Lifestyle'. Everyone has to buy into a lifestyle nowdays and I HATE it! People are such mugs.

It is difficult to refrain completely though as where does one draw the line? I am, myself, a bit partial to a bottle of Palmolive handsoap next to the white basin in my cream, mosaic tiled bathroom (which incidentally is not big enough to swing a cat!).

Which reminds me; did anyone watch Relocation relocation last night? If that bloody couple wanted to save the planet and live a carbon neutral life, why the hell did they buy a brand new second flat in Brighton, where they intended to frequent just once a month? The decision to buy the flat was made because it was of a high-spec design that fitted in with their 'LIFESTYLE'.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH. They were just so bloody glib.

shreddies · 13/03/2008 18:30

I know. It drives me nuts.

£75!!!!

[faints]

newgirl · 13/03/2008 18:42

those molton brown holders are bonkers! the products dont cost anything like that - what planet are they on?

[i like the white company by the way in the sale and for towels and sheets is that allowed?!]

PortAndLemon · 13/03/2008 18:42

Oh my good lord.

Suddenly the White Company one looks almost sensible.

weasle · 14/03/2008 10:38

oh my.

i went to a friend's (v posh, on the thames) flat on saturday and they had one of those 75 quid molton brown things!

makes me feel better that whilst there, another guest and i had a go at the hosts for their energy -extravagant lifestyle. they had every light on in the place fgs! and both plasma screens, even though not being watched.

sophy · 14/03/2008 11:37

What really gets me is the name of the MB one. A "glass butler" fgs. It is so aspirational.

This is why I have given up all shopping for a year ....

Bensonbluebird · 14/03/2008 12:14

Bit off topic but that Relocation relocation couple had me shouting at the telly! it's not bloody green if you are doing things that are totally unneccessary. You don't need a wind turbine and a hydro plant and a solar hot water system and a wood fired boiler you just need enough! and you don't need a high spec interior with a greenwash of environmentally friendly features either. Gargh

Bet you could make a fine bottle holder out of an old loo roll.....

hippipotami · 14/03/2008 12:30

What does it do exactly? I mean surely bottles sit perfectly well next to a basin without being snuggled into a bit of religious plastic?

kiskideesameanoldmother · 14/03/2008 12:38

i look at shite like that and think, another thing to clean. then again, people who buy shite like that also have cleaners.
