How do I keep my cheese fresh without using clingfilm?

I try not to buy disposable products. People managed for years without them. But I'm fed up with my cheese going hard and dry at the edges.

A tupperware is no good because it's still got air in it.

I tried baking paper - no good. Is waxed paper what I need?

What do you use?

Yes, waxed paper. That's what deli counters use (at least they do here in France).

I have one of those posh cheese boxes from Lakeland. It is fantastic. It is a tupperware type box with a charcoal filter so it lets air in and keeps smells out but the cheese doesn't dry out.

I've got a really good cheese storer from Lakeland. Like a plastic cheeseboard with a lid, but it has charcoal filters to stop smell and dry out moisture. You can stick 3 or 4 cheeses in there together and they stay fresh for ages.

I keep it in the wrapper that it's sold in, inside a clip-lock tub. No problems at all.

I also keep it in it's wrapper and then inside a clip lock tub, but I find it 'sweats' and I end up with a watery pongy mess at the bottom of the tub [shudder]

Tin foil is good and can be recycled. Cling film is bad anyway, it makes cheese sweat.

I use a small amount daily for DS1's lunchtime cheese sandwich though.

Don't know why it sweats. We too keep ours in a plastic container, usually a lock & lock type, and we don't get sweaty cheese!

I also have the cheese preserver from Lakeland. It works well, and you don't need any other wrapping so very environmentally friendly.

A cheese preserver looks spiffy but we have such a weeny fridge I'm not sure I could justify taking up a whole shelf with a big posh cheese box.

oooh, just looked at the wax paper. My mum used to wrap my sandwich in wax paper bags when I was at primary school.....oooh, the memories (particularly of blowing them up and then 'exploding' them )

I keep ours in the wrapper it came in folded over at the edges.

Everyone else in the house tends to leave it gaping so the edges go hard but generally it should do the job if you stop air getting in.
