Washing survey

I had a discussion with someone at work about this (yes I know I live a sad life) and it got me thinking about what is 'normal' so I thought I'd do a survey.

Roughly how many loads of washing a week do you do and how many people live in your house?

I do 2 or 3 and there's 3 of us (2 adults, 1 18month old).

2 Adults, 2 muddy boys. At least 1 load a day, extra ones for bedding washes, probably 9 a week? Dry mostly on line, on airer next to radiators if raining, tumble drier if getting a backlog!

I can't believe that some people do so little washing - I'm trying to rack my brains wondering if I could reduce my amount of washing in any way! Maybe its because like today for example DSs have been playing in the mud in the rain? and thats how most days end up?

1dilemma · 22/09/2007 00:04

5 of us 1 in washable nappies
do around 8 washes a week (sometimes more if loads of sheets towels)I don't know where it all comes from I often get lo to wear clothes if not dirty -a rare event
use soapnuts/ecoballs and NEVER tumble dry
{nappynutty do you realise you had NO adult washes on your list? }

NannyL · 22/09/2007 00:05

jellyjuice... my charges have muddypuddles rain suits.... they are fab cause they can get as muddy as they like and the clothes stay clean and dry!

pigsinmud · 22/09/2007 17:46

2 adults 4 children (1 in cloth nappies)
I'm a bit bad I think. At least one wash a day and nappies every other day.
I have 2 muddy football kits twice a week.
So that's 7 + 3 =10
Plus the odd extra. I should think I do about 12 a week.
I hardly ever use my dryer though ... honest!

EricL · 22/09/2007 17:49

2 adults and 2 kids.

I reckon about four or five a week.

40 degrees as well - cos this 30 bollocks doesn't work, ESPECIALLY with whites.

Blandmum · 22/09/2007 17:54

we used to have a setting on our last washing machine for a 30 degree wash called 'Worn once'

We used to call it 'Worn Once, but washed twice'

I'm a 40 degree gal, with the odd 90 for the white cotton stuff

unknownrebelbang · 22/09/2007 18:02

Two adults, three boys.

6-8 loads a week, I reckon.

1 towels
1 bedding
1 school uniform + extras
1 white shirts (DH, DS1 and DS2)
1 karate gis (occasionally get away with fortnightly)
1-3 odd n ends

Plus extras after camp or particularly muddy footie matches etc.

Towels and bedding aside, try not to use the tumble drier if I can help it (DH will use it more than me).

Iron as little as possible, shirts and gis aside.

PrincessGoodLife · 22/09/2007 18:21

2 adults, 1 four yr old boy

probably do about 4 loads a week but always on cheap electric (we live abroad and there's a 3 hour period of half price electric in the afternoons)

susiecutie · 26/09/2007 20:09

2 adults one 8month baby. ( in washable nappies)

so, i reckon every other day and then 3 at weekend when o/h comes home with weeks washing from working away in week... so, is that about 5 washes?

oh, and I use soap nuts. and eco dryer balls, if i ever use the tumble dryer. ;)

DaphneHarvey · 26/09/2007 20:21

2 adults, 2 children, 6 and 4.

7 washes per week.

Tumble drier only if very very wet outside.

Have 2 clothes horses and little hangers that go on radiators.

Towels: hang to dry on clothes horse over night, give em a quick 15 min tumble in the morning if there's another load waiting to be hung out on clothes horse.

Hate using tumble drier. Hate soft clothes, like em to feel slightly "crispy", that way you know they've just been washed.

On average might use tumble drier for 15 mins once a fortnight.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/09/2007 20:24

2 adults, 3 children (1 only a baby though, but in terry nappies). 4 loads a week, mostly dried outside or on a clothes horse.

washing machine does take a lot of washing though - maybe 20% more than normal?

Flamesparrow · 26/09/2007 20:45

5-7, 2 adults, 2 children (one a messy toddler in reusables).

I use soapnuts and don't tumble

Flamesparrow · 26/09/2007 20:46

Oh, wash colours at 30 (or 40 depending on how wrecked it is), whites on 40, nappies on 40 or 60

daisyandbabybootoo · 26/09/2007 20:52

2 adults and 2 children and probably 4 loads of clothes etc and 2 of nappies.

Try to line dry as much as possible, but with the wet summer, I have done a lot of tumble drying

I haven't ironed since before DD was born 16 weeks ago.

daisyandbabybootoo · 26/09/2007 20:54

i forgot the temp as well..........all clothes/towels/bedding on 40 with an extra rinse.
nappies on 40 or 60 with a prewash and extra rinse.

We have delicate skin!

NotAnOtter · 26/09/2007 20:54

10-12 a week

7

yaddayah · 26/09/2007 21:02

2 adults 2 children (5 and 3)

3 loads for bedding
1 towels
2 white washes
2 dark washes
1 pink wash
1 medium colour wash (dh's work shirts)

= 10 loads

Have just started to use the dryer (in summer its on the line)

Use ecover

cheritongirl · 26/09/2007 22:52

2 of us + a baby in washable nappies:
probably 5-6 washes a week, yikes!

sophy · 27/09/2007 16:20

2 adults, 2 kids at primary school.
A wash every weekday, i.e. 5 a week.
Wsah at 30 unless v dirty, in which case will wash at 40 but on a shorter cycle to save energy.
Ony use tumble dryer for double sheets and duvet covers.
