Only buying clothes from charity shops or second hand this year. Anyone else?

I dont have a lot of money, but I do love Primark and other cheap clothes shops as well as charity shops. This year, however I have set a resolution to only buy clothes secondhand. Anybody else follow this rule?

@MaybeDoctor - I have bought some linen clothing from a couple of sellers in Lithuania. I love linen !

Just checking in here, only 2nd hand purchases made so far this year. Since Feb I bought two second hand dresses to wear as the weather has gotten warmer. One cotton & other stories short dress and one forever 21 t shirt dress, both nice and comfy and I wear them as in the pics with bits from my wardrobe. Both were depop purchases which I find super handy.

@eaglejulesk yes to the Lithuanian linen! I've bought the most beautiful sewing fabrics on Etsy from there.

As a newbie here, it was a setback to find, on another thread, someone boasting of never using anything secondhand and never recycling. This ethical lifestyle section is really hzrd to find, so maybe other likeminded members don't know it's here?

JaggedHedge · 25/06/2020 19:17

I didn't know this section was here either! We need to keep at least one thread in "active" so more people discover it.

I've done the not buying new for clothing before and I've recommitted to it during lockdown.

I'm not a particularly ethical consumer and a lot of that is down to time / convenience so I'm trying to break some habits.

Been doing it for about 12 years. Apart from socks and underwear ALL my clothes are from charity shops. I get loads of compliments on items and people ask where I got it then they're shocked it's from a charity shop! Oh! I will sometimes also buy new shoes or a coat. Shoes can sometimes be a bit off from the charity shops but I have had a few pairs. You can get some really good stuff too and it's brand new.

Hello!

Just bumping this thread- wonder how everyone is doing

Really enjoyed reading all your ideas and successes on this thread.

Does anyone have any tips for looking for stuff on eBay? I’ve never really bought clothes from there and just did a few searches for interest.

Obviously a lot of new stuff on buy it now, is it better to go for auction for second hand?
Better to look in the categories rather than do a search for black T-shirt for example?

Thanks in advance Smile

@1990s I love eBay!

If you have particular brands that you like and fit well I'd start there - the filter section is also good - you can filter the search for size, colour, material etc

The 'make an offer' option on some listings is also good! You can get a deal if the seller is asking slightly more than you what to pay

Good luck !

I bought a second hand pair of DMs on Ebay that had barely been worn. It's a great place to buy them as people buy them new not realising how tricky it can be to break them in and then sell them on. I also bought a really lovely second hand Boden dress that I've worn to death.

Thanks @Amum89!

Lemonsyellow · 25/10/2020 18:29

I’ve done this for several years - except underwear. I’ve got good charity shops near me, though. I’ve not bought anything new-new for years, except a pair of running trainers.

Stuck with it - WFH has helped.
