Climate Change kept me awake last night.....!!!!

After hearning all the stories about it being the warmest April on Friday I woke up last night and couldn't sleep for worrying about climate change and us having a monstrous summmer of heat (I love the sun/light/warmth but I'm worried about a really hot summer - last year was bad enough some days I stayed in becuase I couldn't cope being a fair skinned reddish - in my youth - haired type of person). Anyway what else as an individual can I do - I've insulated/low energy lightbulbs/recycle and compost/try not to use the car - but we do use it for work and shopping/use washable nappies etc etc????. Normally other things (my ds??) keep me awake at night but last night it was the summer ahead and was its heat of our own making!!!

Seriously?

I wish!

I wish it was something other than, 'What the hell am I going to do to get money to pay the rent?' or 'Did DH phone the occupational therapist to tell her we're willing to take cancellations so DD1 can get off the wait list?' 'How are the services for SN children in the place where we're moving? Because we'll have to go, we can't afford to live here anymore.'

pelvicflawed · 28/04/2007 21:25

Yep - other things normally keep me awake - so not sure why last night it was climate change!!

What will come, will come.

Try some Nytol Herbal. It works a treat!

luciemule · 08/05/2007 22:13

There's a book out, following on from a tv doc stating explaining that they've got it all wrong and the US government (and prob uk as well) have been paying scientists (climatologists) to paint a bleak picture of climate change, where in fact, figures don't correlate in the way you'd imagine.
Apparently, CO2 emissions from vehicules and factories etc aren't the root cause of climate change and that instead, it's a natural thing caused by the sun, which in effect changed the clouds and CO2 emissions or something (it was late whilst I was watching it).

ballbaby · 09/05/2007 19:45

I'd love to believe that but what would be their motive? The only one i can think of is to give the masses something to worry about so they don't revolt (which someone once told me is why football was promoted as a sport for the people!).

Why else would they want us to cut down on waste/emissions etc? What benefit is there for them (especially oil baron George Bush). If there is another reason it might be that at some point fossil fuels will run out and landfill space will run out but we've still got to do something!

PinkChick · 09/05/2007 19:48

thing is tho, when all these 'clever people' tell us how how its going to be they say "we havent had a summer like this since 1942"???..all the technology/aerosols/gas's etc wernt about then????

KathyMCMLXXII · 09/05/2007 19:51

Personally I think that if it is sunspots not human activity that would actually be more scary as there's even less chance we can do anything about it.

However I don't tend to look at bizarre weather patterns at the moment and assume they are the result of climate change, because if you read any historic diary you will find people noticing and commenting on anomalous weather - I recently read Parson Woodforde's diary (18th c) and he is always going on about weird weather.

Gobbledigook · 09/05/2007 19:59

God don't get sucked in!

I don't buy any of it.

It's getting warmer, end of. Nowt to do with us.

contentiouscat · 09/05/2007 20:07

Oh I read something in the paper about it being linked to population growth, so as usual its our fault for having too many children

I lay awake worrying about the developments since 9/11 but dont see any point in worrying about natural occurances - nowt we can do about it.

Gobbledigook · 09/05/2007 20:56

Blimey, I don't lie awake worrying about anything. I guess I'm fortunate to have no personal worries (touch wood!) but I'm too bloody tired - I'm asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow!

zizou · 11/05/2007 12:01

PF, if you're worried, there's loads you can do, join greenpeace or friends of the earth or another pressure group.

gobbledigook - "nowt to do with us?"

???????????????????????????????

Gobbledigook · 11/05/2007 12:03

No, I don't think we impact the weather at all. I think there is no doubt that it's changing but I am not even close to being convinced that we have anything to do with it.

Sorry!

Gobbledigook · 11/05/2007 12:04

That's not to say I don't think recycling, reducing carbon emissions etc isn't worth doing - it is, and I do as much as I can, but I don't think it will affect the climate one iota.

zizou · 11/05/2007 12:05

What so you don't think manmade emissions are affecting the climate?
Is that even in debate any more?
Come now, come now.

Gobbledigook · 11/05/2007 12:05

No I don't. Yes there is still debate.

I'm not getting into one though, I've done it before on MN and I've got lunch for 2 kids to make!

Gobbledigook · 11/05/2007 12:05

And don't patronise me.
Thanks.

zizou · 11/05/2007 12:07

Wasn't patronising you at all.
Genuinely surprised, is all.

luciemule · 11/05/2007 16:12

Just to straighten out the below debate, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that human emissions aren't impacting on the environment and causing climate change as people first thought and that global warming is a natural occurance -that's not to say I think we should all give up on our green efforts as the diminishing fossil fuels certainly pose a massive threat but I think sun spots and electromagnetic pulses are going to be more of a worry than anything human linked! (I did study climatology and meteorology at uni in case you all think I'm bonkers and have been closely following new material showing natural occuring climate change. Once DH gets back from Afgahnistan, will steal his book about the new theories to get title should anyone then want to read it. I think the programme was on Channel 4/5 the other week so it could be on their website. So Gobbledigook was correct in what she was saying.

Aloha · 11/05/2007 16:14

I read recently that Mars had also got hotter, by the same amount as earth. Thought that was interesting.

Aloha · 11/05/2007 16:15

here

luciemule · 11/05/2007 16:27

There is theoretical evidence to suggest that the earth could be 'reproduced' on Mars and it could be cooled down enough to sustain life as on earth. The science though is lengthy so won't bore you!

SoapOnARope · 11/05/2007 16:45

Canute thought he could turn the sea back, he was wrong an' all

zizou · 11/05/2007 16:51

I am very about all these theories.
Luciemule, I would be interested in hearing what that book is called so I can read it.

luciemule · 11/05/2007 17:24

will have a look on Amazon - SIL bought it for DH last week.

luciemule · 11/05/2007 17:33

Right - here we are then:
'The Chilling Stars: A New Theory of Climate Change' by Svensmark & Calder.
Amazon lets you search through the books, contents etc and the back page has a really good description of what I was on about!
I can't wait to read it.
