I'm desperate for a decent compost bin for the kitchen.

We produce loads of compost so it's always hanging around in the kitchen even though we empty it almost every evening.

I used to have a pretty ceramic container for it but it was ridiculously small and wouldn't last the full day.

How do you store your kitchen compost?

In a bokashi bin. They don't smell. Wriggly wigglers sell them, or if you are lucky, the local council gives them away for free! (We have 2)

viticella · 20/03/2007 14:51

In this , or rather its predecessor which was a little bigger. Should get several days out of it.

Caligula · 20/03/2007 14:51

What's a bokashi bin? Have you got a link?

I just use a big plastic addis container with an airtight lid so it doesn't smell and empty it every day.

Spidermama · 20/03/2007 14:53

I use an old water filter but it looks minging. These are good suggestions. I'll look into them. I'm off to find out what Wriggly wigglers is.

We have the old Lakeland one, you can squeeeeeze a lot in and it has a carbon (?) filter in the lid so it doesn't smell.

JackieNo · 20/03/2007 15:44

Here's the bokashi link - looks good.

CMac · 20/03/2007 15:47

what about the lakeland compost crock

bundle · 20/03/2007 15:48

we have 2 bins (diff sizes) from our local authority - does yours not provide them?

MrsPhilipGlenister · 20/03/2007 15:49

We just have a small box in the kitchen and empty it into the outside bin several times a day.

CMac · 20/03/2007 15:50

... or the lakeland peely bin ?

Bramshott · 20/03/2007 15:55

We have this Must admit I love the bags as there's no sludge in the bottom of the bin and makes it easy to carry to the compost heap.

Bramshott · 20/03/2007 15:56

You have to scroll down that page a little way to see the bin - called a "Bio Box"

princessmel · 20/03/2007 15:59

I have a silver plastic box that sits by the sink. From bettaware. Its not that pretty but does the job. Needs emptying every other day. Its for peelings etc. not cardboard. That just sits behind the toaster till I take it out. Not a good look. I love the Lakeland peely bin thats been linked on this thread.

flatmouse · 20/03/2007 16:02

We have this Lakeland one - same as JanH
replacement filters not pricey either.

bundle · 20/03/2007 16:03

that handle looks well flimsy

Wilbur · 20/03/2007 16:03

I won one of these split bins in a competition. It's really great and the compst side is generous without being so huge it's hard to empty. I think they're probably pricey, but worth it if you need a new kitchen bin as well.

JackieNo · 20/03/2007 16:07

Wilbur - your one is £84 . There's also this which is much cheaper, or this .

flatmouse · 20/03/2007 16:09

Do you mean handle on Lakeland one? We've had it for a couple of years now with no handle issues.

ChocolateTeapot · 20/03/2007 16:10

I went to Lakeland to get one of those green compost caddy things and came out with a Peely Bin as I am shallow and thought it would look good on the worktop, which it does. Wouldn't be without it now.

Spidermama · 20/03/2007 16:18

Bramshott do you put the whole bag in the compost bin? You don't have to empty it? And does it really become compost in a short space of time?

The Lakeland ones look good and I already tried the white croc, but they're just too small for my needs.

I love those recycling bins jackieno. Beats my current arrangement of a great big overflowing recycle box in the kitchen. I could have one of those and empty it regularly.

yes, flatmouse, we had a simliar one which snapped maybe we compost too much

gscrym · 20/03/2007 16:20

I just ordered a compost bin from Waste Aware, Scotland and it was only £6. I also got a free 5l bucket for using inside.

How long does stuff take to turn into compost?

flatmouse · 20/03/2007 16:22

As far as looking good i have to admin our Lakeland one is just in the utility room so easy access from kitchen but not "on view".

Bundle - we fill it to brim regularly - don't see how your peelings would be heavier than ours

JanH · 20/03/2007 16:23

This site is the creme de la creme for recycling bins - £38 for this triple sounds OK? (Can't visualise size though)

We have these for cardboard and aluminium and 2 of these for plastic and glass. Did have them indoors but they took up too much space so they are all in the back yard now with a tarp over (lids can let water in)

Wilbur · 20/03/2007 16:25

Blimey, £84 - now I'm really pleased I won it! You could buy a whole bin man for that...
