I'm desperate for a decent compost bin for the kitchen.

We produce loads of compost so it's always hanging around in the kitchen even though we empty it almost every evening.

I used to have a pretty ceramic container for it but it was ridiculously small and wouldn't last the full day.

How do you store your kitchen compost?

Spidermama - yep, it all goes in. The bags are made of cornstarch, so they compost down at pretty much the same rate as the rest of it (not as fast as some stuff, but faster than eggshells or torn up cardboard for example). I don't tie them up, and usually empty the stuff out into the compost heap and then put the bag on separately. I love them - composting for the home counties!!

That bokashi bin looks fab. So you can compost old bits of fish and meat too in that can you? I'd be a bit sceptical about that, but if you could, it would be wonderful...

There was a thread recently (also others if you search for 'bokashi')

Caligula, I have found that meat and fish scraps rot down better if they are chopped up finely and smothered with the bokashi bran. I emptied a bin into compost heap the other day and had to return some meat into the bin that hadn't rotted at all.

an old bucket with a lid.

wrap your waste in newspaper and it doesn't smell.

we empty ours about once a week.

Another vote for the compost caddy from lakeland. I've had mine for at least 4yrs and it is great, we eat heaps of fruit and veg so have lots to compost but only have to empty it every 2/3 days. The charcoal filter really works no stinky rotting veg smell. Only £4.99 so a bargain price as well I love lakeland.

chocolateteapot - do you find the peely bin gets a bit smelly? Trying to decide between it and the compost crock and the crock one has a filter which the peely bin doesn't. Then again maybe a bit of a pong would encourage me to actually put it IN the compost bin rather than leaving it slowly festering in the kitchen for weeks on end...
